Boehner tells GOP lawmakers House would need to vote on debt ceiling by Wednesday to meet deadline

Washington (CNN)-A Republican source familiar with the negotiations tells CNN that Speaker Boehner told Republican lawmakers Friday that to get the debt ceiling raised by August 2nd, the House must vote on legislation by next Wednesday-and that means it must be posted online this coming Monday.

A House GOP leadership aide tells CNN that Boehner is telling members he believes a House vote has to happen by Wednesday in order for the Senate to have enough time to vote on it before August 2nd. This is because House GOP leaders assume that conservatives in the Senate will force the Senate to overcome a number of procedural options that could take days to do.

A Senate GOP leadership aide says that Wednesday should not be considered as set in stone. It’s not clear whether conservatives would filibuster. There are ways around some of the procedural hurdles that could mean it would take fewer days to accomplish all of this, the aide said. Much will depend on WHAT the deal is, and what the reaction to it is -from both sides, the aide said.

I called my Republican congressman and told him the Republicans need to get off the stick and start making some concessions. The Democrats have been making concessions, but all I hear from the Republicans is "no". The only law they voted on had no chance of passing the Senate or getting past a presidential veto and they knew it. It was time wasted with political grandstanding. The analogy of Nero fiddling while Rome burned comes to mind.

I'm not sure why the pressure is on house, house actually passed their bill, it was senate who rejected it. if senate democrats want to reject a bill, that's fine, but then the blame and pressure is on you not house republicans

The don't hate America.... They just hate those of us who are less ideologically pure... We're a little like "infidels" to them . . .

We are close to striking a deal. Here's how. Have the senate put some lipstick and makeup on the CUT/CAP/BALANCE plan the house already passed and kick it back to the House for approval. Key here is make reasonable changes.

The House GOP is raving mad. I don't think they hate America or want America to fail. They are just seriously misguided on the consequence of a default and the generosity of the 3:1 spending-cut:tax-raise ratio proposed by Obama. It's a wonder how people with such poor judgment came to hijack the political system.

WTF Republicans are insane. They are going to destroy our credit rating and the credit rating of five states, most of them RED states.

I hope they don't reach a deal. Those of you that complain that no one cares about the middle class. What do you think happens when they reach a deal and keep running yearly defiicets? I will tell you they print more money running up the inflation rate. That doesn't hurt the rich that hurts the poor, elderly, and middle class. A debt deal is a deal for the big banks and the federal government.

Republicans are playing politics, they will GLADLY let the US go into default because any plan that they agree to will make Dems look good.

@BeverlyNC - How in the world can you just blame one of the parties? They are both the same and neither gives a rip about you, me, or anyone else except themselves and getting re-elected so they can screw US some more. Get off your damn high horse and open your eyes. Oh, and please depress your Caps Lock key as well. We are all shouting and there will be revolution if this all continues. Doesn't matter what your political stripe is - The system is broken. As stated, wake up!

These comments are proof that this "public forum" is yet another mouthpiece. The american people are smart enough to know that raising taxes in a time such as this unspeakably deadly. Also, how soon we forget that "times such as this" are thanks to failed programs such as "equal housing" and non-discrimintory lending. A bum asks you to borrow $1000, he'll pay you back tomorrow. Yeah right. Bye $1000.

Why won't OBAMA stop "playing games"? Why won't he offer some real Cuts in Spending Now? Why won't Obama reduce deficit spending now. Then we'd know he's serious. Instead Obama is like a 'drunk at the bar' who wants the debt ceiling raised now (wants more drinks now) and promises to reduce rate of spending increase in the coming years (like the drunk who says he'll stop drinking tomorrow or next week).

I think Republicans have invested heavily in Gold and international currencies, and are hoping to make huge personal gain by causing the dollar to plummet. So what if the the interest rate the US pays China goes up? It only costs us $150 billion for each point.

    "Do they hate the US?"

Depends. If by "US" you mean a country with a black president and with minority population growth quickly outpacing and overtaking white population growth, then yes...they hate it like brussel sprouts.

The House passed a budget, the Senate has not passed a budget in how long? They will just keep trying to borrow and borrow and spend its way out of this mess, How about you leave me alone and let me take care of my family and not worrying about taking care of every one else as well. The great thing about this country was that IF someone worked hard enough at it and was smart they could have a nice living... Now the Libtards want me to pay for my living expenses but also pay for my neighbor because that is the right thing to do. WRONG. But one can not try and reason with a Libtard so ill stop.

The only real plan has come from the republicans. The dems don't have a plan. The plan has no specifics that the the so called Gang of 6 have released. It only lists empty promises of cutting in the future. The Gang of 234 released a real plan. That specifies where the savings will come from. If anyone is playing politics with this its the Democrats!!!! We cannot continue to borrow money we don't have. That will cause the Dollar to collapse. You pinhead liberals need to use your brains and learn you use some math skills. Not just bow down to the losers in the Senate that are clueless.
