'Don't ask, don't tell' repeal certified

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen have certified that the U.S. military is prepared to accept openly gay and lesbian service members, and that doing so will not harm military readiness, the White House announced Friday.

Under a bill passed last year that set up a process for repealing the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy, all three men needed to sign a certification confirming the military's ability to move forward with the integration of openly gay and lesbian troops.

A 60-day waiting period will now begin before the repeal is fully implemented.

"I want to thank all our men and women in uniform, including those who are gay or lesbian, for their professionalism and patriotism during this transition," Obama said in a written statement.

"Every American can be proud that our extraordinary troops and their families, like earlier generations that have adapted to other changes, will only grow stronger and remain the best fighting force in the world and a reflection of the values of justice and equality that the define us as Americans."

It is about time. This is an all volunteer military. Why should we deny people who want to serve the option just because they are homosexual. That was done with Blacks during WWII in which they were denied ways to serve fully.

@S.B. Stein E.B. NJ: And as my late grandmother said (she worked in the Bremerton shipyards building destroyers in WWII) regarding this all-volunteer military: If someone wants to serve and protect our country, I don't care who they sleep with.

@ gt – "obama is the homosextuals president for sure...."

No, President Obama is the people's President – that means all the people, all people, all races, all creeds, straight and gay, black, white, and everything inbetween, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and so on. It's what America is supposed to be about.

Are you an American? Or would you be happier somewhere where all men and women don't have an equal right to the pursuit of happiness?

In regards to the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy: Hello folks We do not have a draft anymore! These gays and lesbians volunteered to join the military TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY! They all went through boot camp and passed! That must mean they qualify to serve our country! I find it hard to believe that these people are not condisidered equals in service to our country!

Not one of them is asking for special treatment, special housing or anything other than the same respect straight service people get. Why is it so hard to accept the fact that although their personal preferences may be different, their loyality to still TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY LIKE ANYONE ELSE! No I am not lesbian, I am just someone who feels we need good people to serve our country.
