Bachmann talks about potential 2012 coattails, deflects Pawlenty slams

Marshalltown, Iowa (CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann appears to be basking in the glow that comes with rising popularity and front-of-the-pack status in Iowa.

On Saturday, the three-term Minnesota congresswoman assumed the role of Republican presidential nominee - with Senate candidates potentially riding her coattails to victory. She answered questions about what kind of cabinet secretaries she’d pick, and she employed a tactic used previously by many a front-runner candidate: deflect political attacks from opponents who are running behind.

Debt ceiling impasse imperils safety net programs

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Social Security payments aren't the only federal lifeline that could grind to a halt if the debt ceiling impasse continues beyond Aug. 2.

The federal government supports myriad safety net programs, such as unemployment insurance, tuition grants, food stamps, child care subsidies and housing assistance. That's not to mention the nation's massive health insurance programs: Medicare and Medicaid.

Boehner seeks debt-ceiling solution before Asian markets open

WASHINGTON (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner wants to come up with a solution to the nation's debt-ceiling crisis in the next 24 hours to head off a negative reaction in Asian markets, a Republican aide said Saturday.

Boehner stated this goal in a Saturday-afternoon conference call with House Republicans, just hours after he and other congressional leaders met with President Barack Obama in the White House. That conference call also came a day after Boehner broke off talks with the Obama administration on how to prevent a national default.

Obama calls for leaders to work together on debt deal

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama called on Democratic and Republican leaders to come together and do "the right thing" to resolve the nation's debt crisis Saturday in his weekly address.

He warned that unless an agreement is reached to raise the amount of money the federal government is allowed to borrow, debt will "weaken our economy, cause higher interest rates for families, and force us to scale back things like education and Medicare."
