
Washington (CNN) – Negotiations with Congress on raising the debt ceiling are "getting into a difficult phase," White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley said Sunday.
In an interview on the NBC program "Meet the Press," Daley said the inability to reach an agreement was causing global markets to question if the U.S. political system can deal with problems of mounting federal deficits and debt, and the pending deadline to increase the debt ceiling or face government default.

NEW YORK (CNN) - A city official married the first couple in New York City to wed under the state's new law allowing same-sex marriage Sunday.
Phyllis Siegal, 76, and Connie Kopelov, 84, were married in a chapel at the city clerk's office as a crowd of onlookers cheered.

"The most important thing is that we remove this threat of default from the country for the next 18 months," Geithner said in an interview with CNN's "State of the Union" program. "You want to take this out of politics.
