New survey, same story: Majority wants compromise

Washington (CNN) - A new national poll, but the same headline: When it comes to the battle over raising the nation's debt ceiling, Americans want compromise!

According to a Pew Research Center survey released Tuesday, 68 percent of the public says that lawmakers who share their views on the issue should compromise, even if it means striking a deal with which they disagree. Just 23 percent of people questioned in the poll say lawmakers should stand by their principles, even if that leads to a government default. The 68 percent who call for compromise is up 13 points from April.

The 'big headache': Boehner backed into corner by tea party, Obama

New York attorney general challenges Defense of Marriage Act

NEW YORK (CNN) - In court documents filed Tuesday, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman challenged the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The controversial legislation, often called DOMA, defines marriage for federal purposes as unions only between a man and woman, and excludes same-sex unions, even those valid under state law. According to a news release from the DA's office, the filings come as part of the ongoing case of Windsor v. United States and call for the court to acknowledge Schneiderman's assertion that DOMA violates same-sex couples' constitutional right to equal protection under the law.

Wu resignation improves Democratic odds of keeping seat

Washington (CNN) - Oregon Rep. David Wu's resignation announcement Tuesday has most likely provided relief to national Democrats worried about holding onto what should be considered a safe seat.

The seven term Democratic congressman said that he will resign from the House of Representatives after being accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward a fundraiser's daughter. In a statement issued by his office, Wu said he would step down once the current standoff between Congress and the White House over raising the U.S. debt ceiling is resolved.

The devil is in the downgrade

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Even if lawmakers manage to avoid a self-inflicted calamity by raising the debt ceiling, another economic scourge is lurking just around the corner.

It's not the nastiest of "D" words - default. Rather, it's "downgrade."

White House: Debt deadline looming

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The White House made clear Tuesday that August 2 remains the deadline for Congress to extend the federal debt ceiling, with Press Secretary Jay Carney telling reporters "beyond that date, we lose our capacity to borrow."

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner "has exercised all the wiggle room available to him" to extend the ability of the government to pay its bills since the nation hit its debt limit in May, Carney said.
