(CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie checked into a hospital Thursday morning after he had difficulty breathing, the governor's press secretary, Michael Drewniak, said in a statement.
"In line with someone dealing with asthma, he is being given routine tests as a precautionary measure," Drewniak said.
Spokeswoman Maria Comella said Thursday afternoon that Christie is "fully alert and in charge" and that he was expected to leave Somerset Medical Center in the evening.
Comella told reporters that Christie received tests but no formal treatment, and that he would be back to work Friday morning.
She said the governor was able to walk into the emergency room even as he had difficulty breathing.

Chicken bone caught in his throat? Full donut choke? One thing is clear - the lack of oxygen Has damaged his brain.
As much as I dislike his politics, I really hope that 'The Big Apple' pulls through this better than he went in.
Do yourself a favor Chris and go on a diet. You are too fat.
Govenor Christie is lucky his job provides him with great health insurance and health care. Unfortunately, most of us who live in NJ aren't that lucky.
I wish the Gov. well and hope he is inspired to support great health care for all residents!
Was he choking on a sandwich?
Well I guess he will not have to worry about his health care since us tax payers pay for it. Too bad the same rights can't be for everybody.
Is bully boy morbidly obese? Stay tuned
He is a phat fk- needs his huge *as to go on a diet
It might help if he lost weight.
oh poor fatboy
@Sniffit
Uh oh...the GOP better hope it can force the debt ceiling/deficit debate to hang over everyone's heads before it has to be revisited in just a short 6 months in order to keep the economy at a damaging level of uncertainty and stifle investment. I mean, that's the plan, right...use the Sword of Damocles to suppress recovery, keep the numbers poor, perpetuate everyone's suffering and then blame Obama in 2012, no? They'll be turning the late September/October budget issue into another government shutdown scare, mark my words.
================================================================================================
"Sword of Damocles"?? Don't you mean Sword of Democrats overspending, over taxation over regulation? Or perhaps, Sword of Obama and his class warfare and constant talk of default and raising taxes?? Or maybe it is the Sword of Obamacare, with all of its waivers and huge costs and massive regulations??
He might breath better if he practiced a bit of austerity himself.
The pithy comments are good and well, and I too wish him a speedy recovery. However, the guy needs to join a gym. There I said what you all want to say and haven't thus far.
Glad the Gov has health insurance................unlike so many working Americans that the GOP don't seem to worry about whether they have insurance or not.
I wish Christie well. Must be nice to get really good health care when you need it.
Perhaps he should get fit and change his lifestyle. Why is it all politicians are fat, lazy slobs who demand that we pay for their mistakes.
I don't like his policy that if you work in NJ you have to LIVE in NJ. He's messing with people's lives now. I hope he....
Difficulty breathing? Maybe that's because you are HUGE republican pig.
Really? The glutton is using taxpayer money because he's too fat and unhealthy to breathe. His heartless cruelty has come back to bite him.
This has been the most sane, polite feedback/comments section I've ever seen online. Nobody's taken it upon themselves to get politically nasty or post childish cheap shots. Am I asleep, and this is all a dream?!?
Very impressive.
The Gov is fine, but I hope his press-secretary learns to speak English, instead of gobbledegook. It may help in the future campaigns. This is what he said: "In line with someone dealing with asthma, he is being given routine tests as a precautionary measure" . This is what it should be in English: As usual with asthma patients, the governor was given routine tests as a precaution.
Can I send him a triple-order of McDonald's fries? With a couple quarter pounders on the side?
Maybe a little weight loss would not hurt
With the buckets of lard this guy eats, it's a wonder he hasn't had a heart attack yet. Plus he is high strung. He is cardiac arrest in waiting.
