Boehner: Woke up happy

Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner told Republicans during a closed door meeting that he "woke up happy this morning," according to Rep. Steven LaTourette, R-Ohio, who spoke to reporters after the meeting.

Boehner told GOP members "he loves some less than others today, but he loves us all," LaTourette said.

The Speaker's comments came as he and other top GOP leaders scrambled to make a change to their debt ceiling bill to get rebellious conservatives on board.  They were forced to pull the planned vote on the bill Thursday night after failing to round up enough support.  House Democrats have pledged a united front against the GOP plan.

After late night discussions on Thursday with conservative Republicans opposed or undecided on the measure, GOP leaders agreed to tweak the bill's language dealing with the balanced budget amendment.  To address concerns on the right flank about ensuring future spending cuts actually happen, the revised version of the bill would require that the second increase in the debt limit early next year be contingent on congressional passage of a balanced budget amendment.  The bill originally just mandated that a vote happen, not that it pass.

New Jersey Republican Scott Garrett, who was opposed, told reporters he could now support the bill, and predicted the bill would now pass because of the change.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, asked if leaders now had sufficient votes to pass their debt bill, said, "I think we do."

Speaker Boehner, according to a Republican who attended Friday's closed door meeting, told members, "'If we pass this today, we will have sent not one, but two bills to the Senate that would end this crisis,"' referring to the "cut, cap and balance" legislation the Senate rejected last week.

"'All that will stand between the American people and a resolution to this crisis will be the Senate, which has passed nothing,"' Boehner said, according to that Republican source.

Worth noting that the cut, cap and balance bill does not in fact raise the debt ceiling, but merely says that before they do raise the ceiling you need to pass a balanced budget amendment, so it actually puts Americans one step further away from a solution to this crisis. As for this bill, well they haven't passed it yet have they? And it doesn't look like they will. So no, actually the Republican House has passed precisely zero bills that would end this crisis, whereas if they were willing to compromise with the Democrats we would have something passed already.

Why take the american people through this. They know that this will not pass the senate. A bunch of idiots. All in an effort to try to make President Obama a one term president. If this was a white man this will never happen.

Well, I believe everything in the title except the "woke up" part. Boehner hasn't been really 'awake' in years.

The Senate that Eric Cantor expects concurrence from is the same group the Republican blocked for two years with filibusters – even filibustering their own ideas. It's also the same Senate that assured the House that neither bill could pass with all of the political measures inserted and none of the pain being shared by the wealthy. The Republican House is wasting our time with these games as the stock market and our life savings evaporates. It may be too late now to avert a good part of the crisis yet the Republicans still bow down to the Tea Party radicals. I was a Republican, but no more.

Just wait, his problems have just begun. After his current Bill gets shot down by the Senate, he will really be tested on compromise on Reid’s Bill to stop the disaster. Then we will see how he fairs in that vote.

He has already shown to the World that he has no leadership skills and will be replaced as well as the half-wit Cantor.

You know I was thinking that we may have came out of this recession until the repugs took power in 2010, they've strangled this government in jobs, the
Growth of our economy and the confidence of our consumers. They've shouted bobs bobs jobs, yet all they do is created a manufactured crisis on our debt. There is no way you can grow if these repugs keep cutting consumer spending and jobs. Now the country is not growing. They have stifled the infrastructure programs which would have created millions of jobs, yet they guard defended big corporations who are taking our tax money over seas. The bush tax cuts is the biggest driver of our budget by far yet the repugs seems to be blind to the facts.

"'All that will stand between the American people and a resolution to this crisis will be the Senate, which has passed nothing,"'

Told you so. So they've already started messaging and they haven't even taken their vote yet. They'll be messaging this all weekend..."it's all the Dems' responsibility and fault"...not to mention pretending that the time constraints on how long Reid must wait before taking votes in the Senate don't exist and therefore Reid is purposefully causing delays. Most people won't have any idea about the 25 hour and 30 hour rules, so the GOP will misinformation campaign on it, claiming that the Dems can't get their votes in order or some other nonsensical lie. Of course Boehner got up happy today...he's a delusional sociopath suffering from antisocial personality disorder just like the rest of the GOP.

Tackle the spending problem and tax problem-gang of six plan not the best but I would take that over the gut crap and destroy passed by congress. sorry but that was not a bipartisan deal. For teaparty in SC-see ya at the polls in 2012.

Cute, he's "feelin' the love". Now how about he get his own A$$ in line and 'feel the pain' of the American people.
This wimpy little bill, dictated by the Koch's and Norquist is pathetic.

Make up your mind. If the deficit is an emergency, then take extraordinary measures, like raising taxes!

I will wake up happy when Boehner and the Repugs get some common sense and stop grandstanding with all their theatrics and work on behalf of the American people. They have let these idiotic Tea Partiers put this country on the brink of ruin. Let's stop paychecks to all of these politicians, not the everyday people – the elderly, hospitals who care for the sick and infirm, social security, veteran's pay, etc. All the Repugs care about is corporatiions who stomp on everyday people. Tax breaks for the wealthy need to be revised and should have been part of this plan.

America is on the brink of disaster; Mr. Boehner is proving to be a total failure as a congressional leader, AND HE WAKES UP HAPPY? Really?? Perhaps, as some people suspect, it is the GOP vision to destroy our Government. I didn't think so, but what else could this loser be happy about?

Our position in the world and all the benefits that has brought to our nation and to us as citizens has been afforded by our status as a ("the") strong nation, which is pretty much synonymous with our strong government. We cannot have a small, weak government and be a strong, leading nation. Those who are cheering on the dismantling of our government are rooting for accelerating our demise as the leader of the free world. As we become an "also-ran" on the global stage, I hope the idiots that pushed for exactly that outcome are not whining about the consequences.

Happy? That's more than I need to know, Mr. Speaker. As for your lawless, raucous caucus, I guess the best you can do is to laugh it off. The past 24-48 hours have been rather em-barra-sinnng.

  17. The Day of Financial Reckoning is HERE - The Great Democrat Welfare Society Ends

Hold your head up high John. You've done as much as you can do to save the country from the death spiral Obama and the Democrats have put this country in. You and the Republicans have tried over and over but it is impossible when the Democrats and Obama HAVE NO PLAN to negotiate and do nothing but criticize and refuse to consider what YOU pass.

They have refused the ONLY real solution (Cut-Cap-Balance) so they have doomed this country. Continuing down THEIR road will totally destroy this country in a few years. They insist on throwing the engines full ahead and steering TOWARDS the iceberg. I commend your efforts to save the ship by trying to steer away and throwing the engines in full reverse.

The American people KNOW you are doing the right thing!! Keep up the good work and hold on until we can send you reinforcements in 2012. Only after we finish removing the last vestiges of "progressive" Democrats from the Congress and Whitehouse, will you truly be able to save the country from these very dangerous people.

"'All that will stand between the American people and a resolution to this crisis will be the Senate, which has passed nothing,"' Boehner said.

Well Boehner, as we know budget legislation starts in the House. However, it is incumbent on the house to pass legislation that can ALSO pass the Senate and be signed by the president. Otherwise the House is just passing so much legislative flatulence. That about describes the new [R] party lead by all their Teatards, just so much human flatulence.

Thank god that the Senate did not pass the anti-american bill sent to it by the House. The [R]etards in the House keep saying they are doing what the American people put them there to do. I beg to disagree... a small minority of the American people voted them in. I was not one of them; they DO NOT speak or vote for me. Now the people who were so malignantly stupid enough to vote for them had better prepare to take one so far up their hindquarters for the "gipper" that choking and gagging will occur.

Well, I'm glad to hear that Mr. Boehner woke up happy this morning.

Unfortunately, thanks to his pandering towards the extreme wing of his party, the rest of America won't be waking up "happy" anytime soon.

Boener needs to quit smoking so many cigarettes and cut back on those Gin & Tonics at the drinking holes. Maybe he wouldn't be so burnt out. It's bad enough he cries for feeling guilt about how his party serves the Greed & Gluttony of the Big $ Barons.

'All that will stand between the American people and a resolution to this crisis will be the Senate, which has passed nothing".
Correction: All that stands between the American people and its' decimation is the Senate and the President who will NOT pass what you propose as that would be the death of us and our country.

Some of you like to rant about: where is the President's plan; where's the Democrat's plan; Reid's plan is not on paper; etc. If that is you, then you need to brush up on the facts and read the US Constitution.

    Article 1, Section 7:
All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills. (...)

The above means that any all appropriations originate in the House, which means they originate with the majority party. That means Republicans.

Notice that the Treasury cannot pay any bills, per Section 9.

"No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; (...)."

I read that to mean that in the event of a default, the Treasury cannot spend money that it does not have. Once in default, the Treasury is not authorized to act without written law that has originated in the House.

This crisis should be be called a debt crisis, it is a default crisis. A crisis created by, sustained by, and will be solved by the House; before, during and after the looming default.

If a viable bill does not get passed, soon, …. Mr. Boehner, you must step down.!!!!

Boehner no scruples by telling the American people that he has a bi-partisan solution that has passed the house, when it has provisions that the Senate said were DOA, that the President said were DOA.

Speaker Boehner can not even get his own party in line to pass a bill that is viable. Stop passing stupid, symbolic bills that would just simply be bad for American such as the Cut and Cap bill that would limit the Government in time of crisis. No credible God loving, politician will support such a bill.

How can these Republicans view the act of raising of the Dept ceiling as something that they only can use as leverage. Looks to me like they think that only the Democrats and the President are the only players that care if the dept ceiling is raised or not and the Republicans and their constituents simply do not, either because they are stupid, hate Americans, or are so blinded by a appalling desire to make the President look bad.
