Debt ceiling: Timeline of deal's development

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama on Tuesday signed a compromise plan raising the nation's $14.3 trillion debt ceiling, averting what could have been an unprecedented national default.

Obama's signature came hours after the U.S. Senate passed the plan on a 74-26 vote. The U.S. House passed the package a day earlier on a 269-161 vote, overcoming opposition from liberal Democrats and tea party conservatives.

Moody's affirms AAA rating, lowers outlook

New York (CNNMoney) - Credit rating agency Moody's said Tuesday the United States will keep its sterling AAA credit rating for the time being, but lowered its outlook on U.S. debt to "negative."

In Florida, Pawlenty trashes debt ceiling deal

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - As he dashed between fundraisers during a two-day visit to Florida, Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty paused to meet with voters and set about trashing the debt ceiling agreement signed by President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

The former Minnesota governor called the last-minute framework "very disappointing" and faulted Congressional leaders in both parties for not doing enough to confront the underlying federal debt crisis.

BLITZER’S BLOG: Congress flees Washington

Washington (CNN) - It didn’t take very long for the House of Representatives to get out of Dodge. Within minutes of passing the debt ceiling legislation Monday night, they adjourned until Sept. 7. The August-plus-a-week-of-September recess has begun. Those members who could still get out of Washington Monday night bolted to Reagan National, Dulles or Baltimore/Washington Airport. The others waited until Tuesday.

Now that the Senate has passed the legislation, the senators are doing the exact same thing – rushing to get out of Washington for five weeks.

Tea party groups to join forces in Wisconsin

(CNN) - Two of the nation's prominent tea party groups will merge for a Wisconsin bus tour in support of six Republican state senators facing recall elections.

Kicking off their four-day "Restoring Common Sense" tour Friday, Tea Party Nation and Tea Party Express will hold rallies in multiple cities and defend Republicans who supported Gov. Scott Walker's controversial bill that curbed collective bargaining rights for state employees earlier this year.

Pawlenty's wife: He must show 'significant progress'

Nashua, New Hampshire (CNN) - Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty must do well in an upcoming Iowa straw poll, his wife said Tuesday, telling CNN she is "cautiously optimistic" about his prospects in that contest.

"He needs to move from where he's been and show significant progress, but I'm reasonably confident we're going to see that good progress," said Mary Pawlenty of her husband's chances in the Ames straw poll August 13th.

Snowe hit for debt ceiling vote

(CNN) - It's been three hours and Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, is already getting hammered from the right over her vote to increase the debt ceiling.

What's wrong with the debt ceiling deal?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - The debt ceiling deal President Barack Obama enacted Tuesday cuts deficits and lets the country avert default. But it is getting very muted applause from serious fiscal experts - the ones who actually understand the federal budget.

"No one should pretend that they have solved anything other than an artificial political crisis," said Bob Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a nonpartisan deficit watchdog group.
