Fox News hosts: Palin 'pulled punches' admission a 'joke'

(CNN) - Two Fox News Channel hosts said Thursday they were joking when they previously claimed they felt awkward about commenting on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because she's a fellow Fox employee.

"The only problem with talking about Sarah Palin is that she works here, and it's like a co-worker," said Greg Gutfeld, co-host of "The Five," the network's show on Wednesday. "And if I say something bad and I see her in the hallway, I feel really awkward and wrong, so I just kind of say, 'good job'."

Co-host Bob Beckel agreed, saying he'd also held back his criticism of Palin, a Fox News contributor who makes more than $1 million per year from the network. Palin is flirting with a run for president in 2012.

"It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with your paycheck. That's what you feel awkward about," Beckel said. "I know exactly what you mean. I'll be honest: I've pulled my punches on her."

After the comments spread on the internet, the hosts during Thursday's show replayed the remarks and clarified that they were joking. Republican panelist Dana Perino referred to the segment as a "mea culpa."

"So you make one joke and left-wing sites… go crazy because they're so desperate for any kind of Palin anecdote–that's like their heroin," said Gutfeld.

Co-host Beckel, a Democrat, touted his record of criticizing Palin on Fox in the past and said Wednesday's comments were a way to break up some of the tediousness on the show. "We were joking," he said.

"Everybody happy now? Good," Beckel said as their comments came to a close.

Beckel is a long-time Democratic operative and commentator while Gutfeld is a conservative television host. The two are among a cast of rotating hosts on the Fox show that bills itself as a discussion and debate of the day's top stories.

The original Wednesday exchange followed a playback of Palin's comments Tuesday night over reports that Vice President Joe Biden had likened tea party activists to terrorists.

In Palin's response, she said President Barack Obama should look into his own past with Bill Ayers if he wants to see "domestic terrorists."

CNN, you can also take her daughter's picture off the Ticker, I know it must score tons of clicks for you but when last I checked she was a reality TV actress and not a politician.

Fox news goes soft ...... and this is news? Oh, soft on Palin! And this is news? CNN the tie in with her "terrorism" comments was lousy. If you want to do a story on her comments, do it and let her defend her Teabag Christian Terrorists. We are all quite sick of them and her.

Since she is probably giving Murdoch head on a daily basis to earn that 1 million, as that is the ONLY thing she could do with her pie hole that is worth 1 million dollars a year, I think going "soft" on her is the wise thing to do, assuming you want to continue working for the tea bagger's mouthpiece.

Palin says pretty mean things that are basically untrue (death panels? etc.) but can't take any criticism from anyone. ( Katie Couric's What do you read?) Of course Fox isn't going to say anything bad about her.

Uh-huh. Sure. That's a load of crappola coming from Greg The Gutless.
Here's the bottom line: Sarah is such an easy target, such a proven idiot, with little to no knowledge of the workings of government or the Constitution. She's the head of a highly dysfunctional all-Amerikun trailer trash family; she's an unabashed wannabe with a wannabe daughter to match. In other words she is EVERYTHING that someone in the news industry would loooove to put front and center and lambast......yet you don't. Why is that Greg? What really keeps you and your "news team" from tearing into the tabloid-fodder-Sarah? Sounds to me like you're scared of her. Imagine that, you're all scared of a simpleton nobody from the backwash of Alaska. Here's your sign.

I might add gas prices are down alomst $4.00 today, but the DOW has lost 500 points (and is below 12,000) in just 1.5 days! There goes my retirement....yet again, the President is praised for such a WONDERFUL job! Thats CNN and MSNBC, ABC and CBS, without you telling me this, I would have thought someone should have fired Obama....Man, glad he is doing such a marvelous job, oh this to must be the fault of BUSH and Reagan....oh wait not Reagan, Obama says he was a good guy...let it be said, so it be gospel! All praise the mighty one...Obama!

She works at Fox? When? Does she phone it in from Iowa? Or New Hampshire? Or wherever Presidential candidate groupies go?

Who the He!! gives a crap. She NEVER offers solutions (other than kick dems out). All she does is make up fake stories, lie, exxagerate, collect money from her idiot followers.

We don't need her or anyone like her. She's part of the problem, not part of the solution. SHE'S A QUITTER! A HAS-BEEN! AN IDIOT!

Greg Gutfeld and Bob Beckel??? Anchors?? You mean the guy that does the tabloid show (Red Eye or something) at 3 in the morning on Saturday and the other guy who is the "Democratic Strategist?"

CNN would have you believe the hard news folks at Fox go easy on Palin. Sorry, I just don't see it.

Big deal. At least they don't have brown noses and slobber all over themselves like Chris Matthews, Katie Couric, Joy Behar, Rachel Maddow and Keith Olberman do for Obama. Obama can bow to leaders of other nations, say we have 57 states and pronounce corpsmen as corpse-men, and he's still touted by the left as the smartest man on the planet. Anyway, Palin needs a break from someone. All you liberal lovers of women's rights do nothing but attack everything she does and says while praising women like Pelosi, Wasserman-Shultz, Boxer and Clinton. Stupid is bad enough, but apparently you're all blind, as well.

Faux News admits going soft of Palin – How else could they get an airhead like to her to agree to appear on their comedy station? She doesn't much upstairs and can't think quick on her own. That's why she will only appear on a station that doesn't make her look like her total idoit self.

Stop whining about Obama – a Republican would have no better. And if we didn't want her as VP, why would anyone think she could win as president. There are actually some intelligence people that vote and she doesn't fool them a bit.

It's a shame that this country.......the country that has spawned some of the greatest achievements and advancements in science, medicine, humanitarian idealism, and democratic and political thinking that have ever come along would stoop so low as to give any credence to a hate monger the likes of Sarah Palin. The Republican Party should be ashamed of itself for allowing the likes of the Tea baggers (Sarah included.) to hijack the party and to allow them to steer such a reckless course bent on benefitting only the top 5% of the US population. Idiots!!! Look at what you’ve left the rest of us Republicans, the average middle class Republicans, to deal with. Being an average Republican I look out at the wasteland that has been created by this 5% (I am not naïve enough or dumb enough to buy in to the rhetoric that this has all been caused by the Obama administration.).......employment is down, the stock market is down, the GNP is down, optimism in ourselves and our country is down, education is down……it’s a veritable wasteland out there that has been created for the benefit of the few. It’s time that both the Republicans and Democrats cleanse their party’s of the imbeciles and hate mongers that are trying to steer this country to a certain demise. It’s time for both party’s to do what’s right for the people of this great country of ours!

Sarah Palin is a civilian, it's a much bigger deal that nbc, abc, cbs, cnn, and msnbc go soft with thier coverage of Obama based upon the fact that they see him exactly like a teenaged girl sees Justin Beber.

There is no difference between a tiger beat interview of Beber, and a mainstream media interview of Obama. It is all fawning, soft ball questions, and an immeasurable admiration and love affair.

It is ok for Sarah to get a soft ball interview from Fox, when the interview from the mainstream media that Palin gets is conducted by a man or woman who dreams about Sarah and her family being harmed. Nothing against the journalist, they suffer from the hateful disease known as liberalism.
