Fox News hosts: Palin 'pulled punches' admission a 'joke'

(CNN) - Two Fox News Channel hosts said Thursday they were joking when they previously claimed they felt awkward about commenting on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because she's a fellow Fox employee.

"The only problem with talking about Sarah Palin is that she works here, and it's like a co-worker," said Greg Gutfeld, co-host of "The Five," the network's show on Wednesday. "And if I say something bad and I see her in the hallway, I feel really awkward and wrong, so I just kind of say, 'good job'."

Co-host Bob Beckel agreed, saying he'd also held back his criticism of Palin, a Fox News contributor who makes more than $1 million per year from the network. Palin is flirting with a run for president in 2012.

"It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with your paycheck. That's what you feel awkward about," Beckel said. "I know exactly what you mean. I'll be honest: I've pulled my punches on her."

After the comments spread on the internet, the hosts during Thursday's show replayed the remarks and clarified that they were joking. Republican panelist Dana Perino referred to the segment as a "mea culpa."

"So you make one joke and left-wing sites… go crazy because they're so desperate for any kind of Palin anecdote–that's like their heroin," said Gutfeld.

Co-host Beckel, a Democrat, touted his record of criticizing Palin on Fox in the past and said Wednesday's comments were a way to break up some of the tediousness on the show. "We were joking," he said.

"Everybody happy now? Good," Beckel said as their comments came to a close.

Beckel is a long-time Democratic operative and commentator while Gutfeld is a conservative television host. The two are among a cast of rotating hosts on the Fox show that bills itself as a discussion and debate of the day's top stories.

The original Wednesday exchange followed a playback of Palin's comments Tuesday night over reports that Vice President Joe Biden had likened tea party activists to terrorists.

In Palin's response, she said President Barack Obama should look into his own past with Bill Ayers if he wants to see "domestic terrorists."

Why hasn't anyone said anything about her still being employed by FOX? They fired both Santorum and Gingrich months ago before they declared.

Ha, this is similar to the Fox commentator who told John Stewart that Fox "News": "tells the OTHER side of the story". FAIR AND BALANCED yeah right! The "Fair & Balanced" plastered on their website is evidence of how deceitful the network is, which its owner Rubert has said many times it's an entertainment site... Fox and the Republican Party do not have many values, sorry! I would like politics to be less extreme and more to the center so we are not such a country divided. First on the list: get rid of dumb commentator Palin and Fox "News", please.

So you're telling me that Palin was wrong about the "gotcha" mainstream media? Shocker!

This revelation should come as no real surprise to anyone. Now let's see if any of the primarily liberal media outlets have the backbone to admit they do the same for Obama, as the only thing lacking in their coverage has been POM POMs.

Fox going soft on Palin? What happened to fair and balanced? Of course, we wouldn't want a really hammering interviewer like the hard nosed Katie Couric...or that pit bull Charlie Gibson. They're almost as tough as People Magazine.

It is no different than CNN and MSNBC giving Obama a free pass or going soft on him, which they do everyday. This is not news. This is CNN gossiping about something said on one of their competitor's shows. No wonder Fox has great ratings! Even CNN is watching Fox News!

Funny, funny. Was watching the Bob Beckel show on FOX, he's a funny guy. You know, the one with the 5 hosts on at 5. Well Greg Gutfeld was laughing at the new story about this. He fancies himself as a semi-comedian and was chuckling at the response to his tongue-in-cheek comments about Palin. He couldn't believe the level of outrage to his admission. Seems he never sees her. "She's in Alaska". FOX would need a real long hall for him to pass her in it. He felt that the "Left" would over-react to his little act. Guess he was right.

    Careful wiping the egg off.

Honestly CNN, this tired story has been at the top of the ticker FOR THE ENTIRE DAY, and the comments section has been open FOR THE ENTIRE DAY! Give it a rest – there's only 239 posts in the last 5.5 hours! That's a pretty good indicator that nobody cares anymore! Here's a thought: Howsabout you close this message thread and open the ones on more recent ticker articles.

It's funny that many of the ticker libs claim to be in the center, as if it is moderate to wish harm on every American right of center, and believe that anytime a Democrat does soemthing stupid it is always a Republicans fault.

I would imagine that all National Socalists throughout history have believed that they are in the center just as our own version the Democrats do in America today.

Just imagine if Democrat was moderate, take driving in the ultra blue areas for example, our nation doesn't have enough emergency rooms that would be needed if every part of the nation was a DEMO-Lition derby as the ulra blue roads are.

Every socialist believes in censorship of any ideology or thoughts they disagree with, just read the comments from the ticker libs. If such Democrats had an unquestionable majority...well I would think any smart investor would be buying stock in companies that specialize in making large ovens.

Great Story, wow. Hard hitting journalism by a network that gets their butts handed to them every day in the ratings, and basically has gone far-left in it's reporting. Letting two stalwart reporters go for being too conservative.

The Guttfield quote could just as easily be a quote from Brian Williams about Barrack Obama. Or Chris Matthews about Obama. Or maybe even Diane Sawyer could say: "It's really difficult asking Obama tough questions because, you know, I work for him – or should I say, the DNC. What if I go to a Pro-Choice rally and run into fellow leftwingers, they will give me such a hard time".

Sad thing is we will NEVER get such candid quotes from the leftwingers because they are either in denial or purposefully deceiving the nation into thinking they are not totally in the tank for any Democrat.

the great writer who wrote this fell for it hook, line and sinker.maybe do some real investigation before wrighting a hit piece. If you watched the show on fox today you would have seen it was a set up to see how vicius the MSM would take the info and run with it. Even Beckel was shocked. BY the way for all you well informed progressives maybe you should know that Palin does most if not all of here interviews at fox from here home in Alaska. This country is in serious trouble and Palin should be the least of your worries. This administration is causing the downturn of this great nation. By the way each of your children who are not of working age currently owe the government 46,000 dollars so to all of you out there who want to pay higher taxes just check the box on your april return next year and send in a few bucks because you are allowed the govt will be glade to take more from you

Now I don't know anyone who thinks (Fox News) as a real news network. So what did anyone expect from that GOP entertainment network with their own blind spin and comments.

But ... both of them have thought of bad things to say about Palin. It time for them to man-up.

  19. ReallY!!?

Like this is really news. Tallk about the entire MSM ignoring Obama on just about everthing fr scaring us about default & Medicare checks not going out when we have 9 times over the amt of the interest payments to avoid said default in the coffers. Did anyone in the media challenge Obama? How about Obama lecturing Congress to get to work then takes of for a fundraiser. Anyone said anything? CNN? I could go on forever. why bother our debt is now 100% of GDP. Yet fools here continue to support this dim wit POTUS.

  20. ReallY!!?

Oh good work CNN. Way to Nail those guys over at FOX. Oh wow. Market tanks after Obama said it would not if debt deal is passed. No challenge fr CNN. Instead the guys wanting to restore fiscal sanity are demonized by CNN & called terrorists wanting to "blow up" the economy. Tell me how do reconcile that? You won't even call the real terrorists, "terrorists" but have no problem with that incitful rhetoric, when applying it to those that r actually trying to stop the spending insanity b/c we r broke!!!

Palin = Old Flacid Republican Viagra. The old guys like the pavlovian response she gives them, and the old women like the way any stoopid broad with some plastic surgery can manipulate the men. She's perceived as "powerful" and in control.

Mainly the old guys just like how it's "ok" to ogle at her because she's a public figure .. and she makes those dead dangly naughty bits down below wake up again! They get the "all clear" from the wife on admiring her image because she's non-threatening to them. Mmmm.... blood back in the dead naughty dangly bits again! Sarah GOOD!

The funny thing is, (even though I'm just horsing around at her expense) I'm probably not to far off track here!!

...and like usual the liberals on this site are too ignorant to notice the two "hosts" mentioned are not journalists, but political commentators.

I suppose being accurate isn't important, is it? As long as you can pretend to be interested in politics because you watch The Daily Show, you're happy.
