Fox News hosts: Palin 'pulled punches' admission a 'joke'

(CNN) - Two Fox News Channel hosts said Thursday they were joking when they previously claimed they felt awkward about commenting on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because she's a fellow Fox employee.

"The only problem with talking about Sarah Palin is that she works here, and it's like a co-worker," said Greg Gutfeld, co-host of "The Five," the network's show on Wednesday. "And if I say something bad and I see her in the hallway, I feel really awkward and wrong, so I just kind of say, 'good job'."

Co-host Bob Beckel agreed, saying he'd also held back his criticism of Palin, a Fox News contributor who makes more than $1 million per year from the network. Palin is flirting with a run for president in 2012.

"It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with your paycheck. That's what you feel awkward about," Beckel said. "I know exactly what you mean. I'll be honest: I've pulled my punches on her."

After the comments spread on the internet, the hosts during Thursday's show replayed the remarks and clarified that they were joking. Republican panelist Dana Perino referred to the segment as a "mea culpa."

"So you make one joke and left-wing sites… go crazy because they're so desperate for any kind of Palin anecdote–that's like their heroin," said Gutfeld.

Co-host Beckel, a Democrat, touted his record of criticizing Palin on Fox in the past and said Wednesday's comments were a way to break up some of the tediousness on the show. "We were joking," he said.

"Everybody happy now? Good," Beckel said as their comments came to a close.

Beckel is a long-time Democratic operative and commentator while Gutfeld is a conservative television host. The two are among a cast of rotating hosts on the Fox show that bills itself as a discussion and debate of the day's top stories.

The original Wednesday exchange followed a playback of Palin's comments Tuesday night over reports that Vice President Joe Biden had likened tea party activists to terrorists.

In Palin's response, she said President Barack Obama should look into his own past with Bill Ayers if he wants to see "domestic terrorists."

What pray tell does the President have to do with a 300+ point drop of the Dow???
Obviously, Morningstar is waaay too over your head or you would find that the rest of the worlds markets dropped as well on global economic jitters

I guess that means that you have not noticed what "most Americans" have noticed. Americans have noticed that since Obama took office, recovery has been slow, much slower than desired. That much I am sure you have noticed.

I don't know about this part, though. Ever since Republicans took over the House and governerships across the country, the economy has slowed and now has exhibited signs of a nose dive to come. All of this is due to the radical right wing social engineering that Republicans have foisted upon the entire country.

Don't know about Tea baggers..but didn't your mom teach you not to spend all your money?
when you are neck deep on credit card debt, does normal financial officer advice you to pay off your debt and spend less even if that means you don't have your pretty fee good new clothers? or do they advice you to just call the credit card company to raise your credit limit and keep up the spending.

Most of the comments made so far , are obviously being posted by the radical , left wing , sheep-like ,terrorists . They are so afraid of consevative white women , that it's laughable . Feel threatened ? Is your self esteem being brought into question ? Bash away !!! It just shows your weakness .

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************The only thing we are threatened by is that ANYONE could be dumb enough to think the idiot could be President....WOW

Hey ART, why do you feel the need to disparage women? Are you a chauvanist?? Just say you disagree with their political slant, don't demean them. I'm pretty sure Bachman and Palin have more success in this world than you do....so I'm not sure you have any legitimate standing to call them idiots....

Fox goes easy on Palin. And she accuses the main stream media of being biased? Once again, they are the party of "Do as we say, not as we do".

We all know the last economic failure wash Bushes fault and this time it is the Republicans for holding the economy and every American hostage with their terrorist like attitude towards the economy.

Palin has been given a pass as mayor as Governor, as VP pick they were scared out of their panties if McCain won so why would anyone not know she is given a pass on everything she does or trys to say.Crosshairs pass, death panel pass, blood libel pass, stupidity pass etc etc etc. Lady Blah Blah has nothing important to say to anyone.

If Fox had any journalistic integrity to begin with then this might be newsworthy, but since they’re no better than their British half-siblings, they’ll never be seen as anything more than a pandering, biased, cheesy, made for television tabloid.

I think she is in chage of the Global Geography section specializing on Russia. There is also the department of communication where she is practicing to talk a lot without saying anything. Great job too.

  25. Liberal Bias in the Media?

Fox News Anchors? You're kidding right? This is what passes as objective journalism at CNN? No wonder Fox is kicking your rear end.

Greg Gutfeld is the host of "Red Eye" which broadcasts at 3 AM and is most certainly NOT a NEWS program, but an opinion show. He currently co-hosts "The Five" which is, once again, an opinion show.

Bob Beckel is a regular Democratic contributor to Fox, often appearing on the hard news shows, as well as a weekly appearance on Hannity, and now a co-host of "The Five." His appearances are for...offering his OPINION on matters.

I'd be curious to see how CNN defines what a News Anchor is? Neither of these individuals are news anchors, nor would they suggest such. Yet CNN apparently is happy to make this up in an effort to discredit Fox News. FAIL!!!

Incidentally, this piece suggests that both men have chosen to "take it easy" of there own free will, NOT that they've been instructed to do so by Fox News. That is not much of a story. If they had been instructed to do so, or threatened with action if they didn't do so...that would be a news story.
