Fox News hosts: Palin 'pulled punches' admission a 'joke'

(CNN) - Two Fox News Channel hosts said Thursday they were joking when they previously claimed they felt awkward about commenting on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because she's a fellow Fox employee.

"The only problem with talking about Sarah Palin is that she works here, and it's like a co-worker," said Greg Gutfeld, co-host of "The Five," the network's show on Wednesday. "And if I say something bad and I see her in the hallway, I feel really awkward and wrong, so I just kind of say, 'good job'."

Co-host Bob Beckel agreed, saying he'd also held back his criticism of Palin, a Fox News contributor who makes more than $1 million per year from the network. Palin is flirting with a run for president in 2012.

"It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with your paycheck. That's what you feel awkward about," Beckel said. "I know exactly what you mean. I'll be honest: I've pulled my punches on her."

After the comments spread on the internet, the hosts during Thursday's show replayed the remarks and clarified that they were joking. Republican panelist Dana Perino referred to the segment as a "mea culpa."

"So you make one joke and left-wing sites… go crazy because they're so desperate for any kind of Palin anecdote–that's like their heroin," said Gutfeld.

Co-host Beckel, a Democrat, touted his record of criticizing Palin on Fox in the past and said Wednesday's comments were a way to break up some of the tediousness on the show. "We were joking," he said.

"Everybody happy now? Good," Beckel said as their comments came to a close.

Beckel is a long-time Democratic operative and commentator while Gutfeld is a conservative television host. The two are among a cast of rotating hosts on the Fox show that bills itself as a discussion and debate of the day's top stories.

The original Wednesday exchange followed a playback of Palin's comments Tuesday night over reports that Vice President Joe Biden had likened tea party activists to terrorists.

In Palin's response, she said President Barack Obama should look into his own past with Bill Ayers if he wants to see "domestic terrorists."

I hope Palin runs for president and wins... It is our only hope for America! She has more balls than Obama will ever have!

Great. So when will we hear MSNBC, ABC, CNN, et cetera apologize for being liberal lap dogs?

Yeah kind of like MSNBC gives every liberal a break. For those of you who think shes dumb..she certainly has your attention. It is because of you that she remains in the spotlight.

"The obligatory Palin ticker item to take the sting out of the ever-increasing bad news for Obama, today being a 300+ point drop in the Dow."

Mission Accomplished for the GOP, huh? That debt deal in which Boehner "got 98% of what" he wanted sure does seem to be doing the economy a righteous favor, doesn't it? Boy, I sure hope the GOP goes through with its plans and threatens to shut down the gov't in Sept if "entitlement" aren't cut and then tries to use the trigger mechanism to play more hostage games in hopes of dampening holiday spending...that'll create so many jobs we'll be begging illegal immigrants to come here, won't it?

It's not that she works for Faux News, but that she's a right-wing Republican. They automatically get glowing coverage from Faux no matter what they say or do. The only Republican Faux will take shots at is if he/she is not far right-wing enough to suit their tastes, such as Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts.

Well, maybe that makes it blatantly clear: conflict of interest.!!
The Fox guys to a degree, but Sarah Palin – big time. Either you run for office, then you're not a commentator, or you don't. As we all know she isn't really.
Then she should just admit she's in it for the money, like Trump. And the circus is over.

So what is Greta, Hannity & Bill-O's excuse?
90% of the time, $arah is sitting in the Faux Lake Lucille studio
spewing her word salad comments dressed up with 3 word
sound-bites and laced with nasty comments about Government.
Rarely does she appear 'live' in or at Faux.

Big surprise the Un-fair and Un-balanced news network would go easy on their leading idiot. I'll admit CNN does lean a bit to the left but at least they make an attempt to balance it out. I mean 5 or 6 Fox news anchors are, or are considering, running for the Republican Presidential ticket.

"Yet CNN and the rest of the lamestream media continue to go extra soft on little Barry and shield him from much-needed scrutiny!

Do the American people a favor CNN – start doing your duty and start digging into and examining the extremist background and influences, lack of any pertinent executive experience of this liberal ideologue that has lead to one after the other failed policies of this "messiah" you obviously protect! He's killing our country!

Obama has failed miserably, and will be ousted in 2012! The mama grizzly is coming!"

WRONG! The entire world has had a chance over the last few weeks to see just how the Tea Party operates. They saw ugly, cruel, divisive, polarizing and racist. No, mama grizzly is finished and so is the Tea Party. We the people will prove it to you come November 2012. If Obama has failed, he had a lot of assistance from the Tea Party and voters will remember it because voters will be affected adversely.

The fact that Fox news even employs this woman just shows how hollow and worthless they are as a new organization. I feel bad for people that have to call her a co-worker.

Under the truth in advertising laws we have in this country, i have no idea why Fox 'news' is even allowed to label itself a news organization. it should have to call itself the propaganda arm of the republican party and have a warning label that states it causes brain rot. PS, you go, Sniffit!!!!!!!

My prediction is this, Fox will continue to shower her with money and when the deadline has come and gone to enter the Primaries, they will drop her contract. Couldn't happen to a "meaner" person.

Look, she is totally ignorant. Therefore she should be totally ignored. Educated people understand that very well. How come she got to work at Fake News is a mistery for me. Probably they can understand and tolerate her incoherent way of speaking. But then, educated people do not watch Fake News simply because it is not a news channel but a demagogic and chauvinistic channel. There is nothing educated people can learn from Sarah

  19. Tea Party is Pledging to one MAN - Grover Norquist to Hold America Hostage...My Way or NO WAY!!!!

That's why Palin can't get out of the bubble created by FAUX NEWS and Facebook!....even FAUX NEWS commentators are begining to vent their frustration because they've giving her enough platform to espouse her intelligence but everytime she comes up short!

Its difficult to have an intelligent conversation with an adult who has an IQ of a 2yr old, and most expecially when you YOU are paying her one million dollar$$.

America, that's the reason why we are screwed up as a country...the smart ones can't even find jobs but the dweebs Palinistas are parading themselves as experts on just about any subject that bedevils the United States!!!

    go figure!

  20. The Day of Financial Reckoning is HERE - The Great Democrat Welfare Society Ends

The Lame Street Media has given their chosen one a complete pass for 4 years now. Even with the fool destroying the country and the economy with his socialist policies, they feel that tingle up their leg I guess. Who cares if a few people take a pass on attacking Palin. It isn't like there aren't a hundred thousand rabid leftists just waiting to ponce on her every move and word.

Why do you think she only shows her face on Fox. In addition to not wanting to cause trouble I think people at Fox actually feel sorry for her. She can't answer simple questions, she's a master at word salad, she mindlessly babbles with some kind of mixture of southern folksey and valley girl accent. She sounds like a mindless beauty pageant contestant, oh that's right she was.
