Fox News hosts: Palin 'pulled punches' admission a 'joke'

(CNN) - Two Fox News Channel hosts said Thursday they were joking when they previously claimed they felt awkward about commenting on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because she's a fellow Fox employee.

"The only problem with talking about Sarah Palin is that she works here, and it's like a co-worker," said Greg Gutfeld, co-host of "The Five," the network's show on Wednesday. "And if I say something bad and I see her in the hallway, I feel really awkward and wrong, so I just kind of say, 'good job'."

Co-host Bob Beckel agreed, saying he'd also held back his criticism of Palin, a Fox News contributor who makes more than $1 million per year from the network. Palin is flirting with a run for president in 2012.

"It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with your paycheck. That's what you feel awkward about," Beckel said. "I know exactly what you mean. I'll be honest: I've pulled my punches on her."

After the comments spread on the internet, the hosts during Thursday's show replayed the remarks and clarified that they were joking. Republican panelist Dana Perino referred to the segment as a "mea culpa."

"So you make one joke and left-wing sites… go crazy because they're so desperate for any kind of Palin anecdote–that's like their heroin," said Gutfeld.

Co-host Beckel, a Democrat, touted his record of criticizing Palin on Fox in the past and said Wednesday's comments were a way to break up some of the tediousness on the show. "We were joking," he said.

"Everybody happy now? Good," Beckel said as their comments came to a close.

Beckel is a long-time Democratic operative and commentator while Gutfeld is a conservative television host. The two are among a cast of rotating hosts on the Fox show that bills itself as a discussion and debate of the day's top stories.

The original Wednesday exchange followed a playback of Palin's comments Tuesday night over reports that Vice President Joe Biden had likened tea party activists to terrorists.

In Palin's response, she said President Barack Obama should look into his own past with Bill Ayers if he wants to see "domestic terrorists."

Yeah, it's probably pretty hard to make negative comments about ANY member of the GOP on the GOP network. What a shocker....

    Eeew, don't sniffit, just flushit!

Yet CNN and the rest of the lamestream media continue to go extra soft on little Barry and shield him from much-needed scrutiny!

Do the American people a favor CNN – start doing your duty and start digging into and examining the extremist background and influences, lack of any pertinent executive experience of this liberal ideologue that has lead to one after the other failed policies of this "messiah" you obviously protect! He's killing our country!

Obama has failed miserably, and will be ousted in 2012! The mama grizzly is coming!

The Tea Party was about taxation without representaion................Control by a Foriegn government that demanded taxes with no sservices.......The modernday tea party is against taxes for the uber rich.............................against taxes is the only thing they have in common with the original tea party in boston...................but its the same as Hitler using the swastika under a false ppretense...................it wasnt a negative symbol....................but he hijacked it.........................Just like the Tea Party Fake Patriots aare Hijacking the historical Tea Party event!

Why is this news? Fox News does this with anyone with an "R" next to his or her name, they are a wing of the Republican party. Hell, their hosts run for office and/or hold political positions. Can you say "conflict of interest."

So.....Let me get this straight. Fellow employees hate to publicly criticize a colleague. Sounds like about every workplace in the country. If she ever runs for for president (she won't get my vote simply because she is as qualified as Obama), we can revisit it but why is it even an issue when she is just one of hundreds of talking heads all over Fox, CNN, MSNBC etc. Then we have NBC, MSNBC, CNN all taking it easy on Obama who is an elected official, empty suit that he is. Now there is no justification for the biased favorable (you can call then less negative if you like)views toward him. He is in office. Not employed in the private sector as a talking head even though a talking head is about all he his.

Two anchors on FNC admit going soft on Palin and it is news. The whole CNN network is in the tank for Obama, but that is ok? At least you don't have Chris Mattews dry humping an Obama cutout on a daily basis.

And, of course, he did not kick off his career in Ayers apartment, neither was he born outside the US and neither is he socialist. Not that it makes any difference to the committed liars cited in this article

The article says Fox News Anchors, plural, which means more then one. Where is the other anchor from Fox News making this statement. Please try to make comments on what the Article is about instead making comments on a mother of 5, state basketball champion, former mayor and governor, writer of two best selling books, second woman to run for vice president of the United States, self made millionaire and what really p-–s u off she is a Christan woman, that gets to ya.

With certainty it's beyond belief that Fox would go soft on 1/2 term genius such as hers. Why I can remember her being so astute with insight concerning running the country with John McCain. Her instant recall ability for facts and knowing what the American people want was and is truly a reason to fear her. When she and Michelle Bachman run for the highest offices in this country we will get our answers from Fox News with truth and clarity that they are known for. I think that these reporters are just saying this to put a human side on themselves when they are acctually scared of her.

Fox isn't balanced news. Murdock 's problem reporting was 30 minutes worth, when other news venues were reporting it for 170 minuets. i can't watch Fox or listen to talk radio.

Sniffit and Rudy NYC are some of the best bloggers on this ticker. Your post reeks of jealousy and it is not helpful to the discussion at hand. Hateful comments and trolling are puerile. We can disagree without being disagreeable. :)

Stop reporting about Sarah Palin...seriously, she's not even in any type of political office, she's just a citizen like anyone else. The only thing that keeps her famous is news outlets constantly reporting about her day in and day out

@fair and eeew, you must be inhaling the same fumes tgat give her a fire in the belly and those brsin farts.
This bimbo is extremely dangerous to the country. Sheb s called a patriot by some but they forget she and her husband are traitos who wanted AK to secede from the Union. Her vitriol goes beyond the usual rambling most politicians use.her comment boutnthebPresident being traitor "heck, shoot, mr president" has a double meaning because this is what she does to incite those lunatics who worship her and her shrillness. She spews forth hate and bigotry to see if it sticks and cnn folows her every mmove and brain fart by thinking any sane person cares about what she says! She is an evil piece of trailer trash! Reminder tonall . . . Crooshairs and AZ shootings!

    Suggestion for CNN:

Create a comedy section (world, politics, sports, etc.) and post all Palin stories there. This would be a hallmark of truth in journalism and silence all the criticism from folks who hate seeing her getting any press.

These two have just admitted to the tip of iceberg. Fox fabricates, outright lies to make its right-wing nutjobs look job. I wonder how any Fox News employee manages to get a job anywhere else. They have no morals and absolutely no journalistic integrity.
