Fox News hosts: Palin 'pulled punches' admission a 'joke'

(CNN) - Two Fox News Channel hosts said Thursday they were joking when they previously claimed they felt awkward about commenting on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because she's a fellow Fox employee.

"The only problem with talking about Sarah Palin is that she works here, and it's like a co-worker," said Greg Gutfeld, co-host of "The Five," the network's show on Wednesday. "And if I say something bad and I see her in the hallway, I feel really awkward and wrong, so I just kind of say, 'good job'."

Co-host Bob Beckel agreed, saying he'd also held back his criticism of Palin, a Fox News contributor who makes more than $1 million per year from the network. Palin is flirting with a run for president in 2012.

"It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with your paycheck. That's what you feel awkward about," Beckel said. "I know exactly what you mean. I'll be honest: I've pulled my punches on her."

After the comments spread on the internet, the hosts during Thursday's show replayed the remarks and clarified that they were joking. Republican panelist Dana Perino referred to the segment as a "mea culpa."

"So you make one joke and left-wing sites… go crazy because they're so desperate for any kind of Palin anecdote–that's like their heroin," said Gutfeld.

Co-host Beckel, a Democrat, touted his record of criticizing Palin on Fox in the past and said Wednesday's comments were a way to break up some of the tediousness on the show. "We were joking," he said.

"Everybody happy now? Good," Beckel said as their comments came to a close.

Beckel is a long-time Democratic operative and commentator while Gutfeld is a conservative television host. The two are among a cast of rotating hosts on the Fox show that bills itself as a discussion and debate of the day's top stories.

The original Wednesday exchange followed a playback of Palin's comments Tuesday night over reports that Vice President Joe Biden had likened tea party activists to terrorists.

In Palin's response, she said President Barack Obama should look into his own past with Bill Ayers if he wants to see "domestic terrorists."

At least the people at FOX are honest, they admit that they have a bias as opposed to CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR who all try to be covert in their bias. That Morgan dude on CNN is almost as bad as Oberman.

So "Fakes News" gives Sarah a pass... What a shock! Next thing they'll do is try to claim being "fair and balanced..." from under their Wisconsin grown palm trees. No, wait...

No one is afraid of conservative white women, especially the ones that are showing their ugly mugs. They are so stupid, that is what we are afraid of. I guess that it is okay for the bimbos to teach your daughters to just be stupid, get pregnant and pretend that you are Christians to get through life. Sounds like this fools' supporters really need to get a grip. You know that the old republican white men have told her not to run already. All they want to do is jump in the bed with her and this just proves how they respect women period. Why do you think McCain chose her? LMAO!!!! She is an embarassment to the country and the world and you followers think that this is okay. Keep giving her your money. She is laughing all the way to the bank. Like I have said before looks fade, stupid last forever

@Fair is Fair: Until the debt debacle, the dow was going in the right direction. This recession is the republican/tea bagger cut spending solves everything recession.

This is on you tea baggers. Maybe unemployment is our number one concern, and like the economists have been telling us, MORE government spending is what will help.

Obama is going no where due to your racist, terrorist ways. He will stay in office due to your idiotic tea partiers/republican undercover KKK way of thinking. People see exactly under your little white sheets. It is to late to try and tap things down. Between Palin and Bachmann us so called leftist liberal media has not one thing to worry about. We only wish that you would find another country to carry on with your devilish ways. The white man is still trying to control everything, starting with the Indians who actual should be running this country, not poor white trash who stole it from them.

I don't blame them because there is nothing else they can call Palin but an idiot and of course that would get them fired. It would be degrading to them to say Palin is intelligent knowing that would be a lie and bad news reporting as it is already.

Eeew, don't sniffit, just flushit! – are you one of those people who sit in their basement and let Faux News brain wash you into believing every conspiracy about Obama there is out there? "Oh, he palled around w/Ayers!" Yeah. He was a kid when Ayers was bombing things. Oh wait, per Faux news yesterday, "Obama is NOT a Christian!" Really? What's your proof?

Here's what it boils down to, is mainstream media liberal? Absolutely. Is Faux News based on a bunch of lies and inuendo? Absolutely. You know why though? It makes Murdoch money because he knows the liberal media market is saturated, so if he produces a product totally opposite of the mainstream, and there are people gullable enough to swallow it up, HE'S GOING TO MAKE MONEY. Myself, I go between both news sources (I should be smacked for referring to Faux News as news) and form my opinion based on both sides. But the extreme some of you people take the crap broadcasted on Faux news... definitely leaves me shaking my head at the masses. Oh, and for those that say, "Oh Faux News pummels CNN, NBC, MSNBC in the ratings..." Of course they would. Several media outlets split the masses versus Faux news dictates it's message to one crowd. Divide and conquer. Doesn't make Faux news credible.

Yeah – and the baggers taking the nation hostage, and gutting the economy is a top story today too. The bagger deal is plunging the nation into a second recession. Conservativfe policies ALWAYS do.

Look at a graph of all the recessions since the Civil War. Almost without exception they occur when conservative economic policies are in place. The pattern is even more clear since the 1920s when modern conservative first destoryed the world economy.

Ha, all of you people on here complaining that Palin gets it easy from FOX News.

Have you watched a single liberal news outlet? They don't ask a single liberal tough questions. Give me a break CNN, you most of all let the libs off scott free.
