Fox News hosts: Palin 'pulled punches' admission a 'joke'

(CNN) - Two Fox News Channel hosts said Thursday they were joking when they previously claimed they felt awkward about commenting on former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because she's a fellow Fox employee.

"The only problem with talking about Sarah Palin is that she works here, and it's like a co-worker," said Greg Gutfeld, co-host of "The Five," the network's show on Wednesday. "And if I say something bad and I see her in the hallway, I feel really awkward and wrong, so I just kind of say, 'good job'."

Co-host Bob Beckel agreed, saying he'd also held back his criticism of Palin, a Fox News contributor who makes more than $1 million per year from the network. Palin is flirting with a run for president in 2012.

"It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with your paycheck. That's what you feel awkward about," Beckel said. "I know exactly what you mean. I'll be honest: I've pulled my punches on her."

After the comments spread on the internet, the hosts during Thursday's show replayed the remarks and clarified that they were joking. Republican panelist Dana Perino referred to the segment as a "mea culpa."

"So you make one joke and left-wing sites… go crazy because they're so desperate for any kind of Palin anecdote–that's like their heroin," said Gutfeld.

Co-host Beckel, a Democrat, touted his record of criticizing Palin on Fox in the past and said Wednesday's comments were a way to break up some of the tediousness on the show. "We were joking," he said.

"Everybody happy now? Good," Beckel said as their comments came to a close.

Beckel is a long-time Democratic operative and commentator while Gutfeld is a conservative television host. The two are among a cast of rotating hosts on the Fox show that bills itself as a discussion and debate of the day's top stories.

The original Wednesday exchange followed a playback of Palin's comments Tuesday night over reports that Vice President Joe Biden had likened tea party activists to terrorists.

In Palin's response, she said President Barack Obama should look into his own past with Bill Ayers if he wants to see "domestic terrorists."

Just let the dummy talk. Draw your own conclusions. BTW, google "stupid things Obama has said." Apparenlty Palin and Bachmann have some strong competition when Obama goes off script-and sometimes when he's on script.

A Hail Mary rushed decision by a losing John McCain who couldn't get Joe Lieberman approved by his Republican party gets us to a famous Tina Fey and Fox News hiring Sarah Palin. She is running for President and a pink polka-dotted flying elephant just landed on my roof.

Palin will never run for president. She makes too much at Fox to risk her job.

And there we have it......fair and balanced indeed. How about "biased and wimpy" instead?

FOX news goes soft on Palin, and most of the rest of the media goes soft on Obama. Both biases are pretty transparent to me. If you can't see thru media biast, I hope you're not wasting a vote.

You also have to account for the fact that Palin can’t take any criticism whatsoever. She surrounds herself with cheering sycophants. But if anyone dare asks her a hard question – like “What books do you read? – and she will never forgive them for “ambushing” her. So if Fox starts asking her questions she’ll have nowhere else to go. Imagine Palin not in the news…

    Yes! Imagine it!

Uh... these people aren't anchors... they are analysts. They don't report news, they comment on it. So who cares?

It's called a "conflict of interest", Mr. Gutfield. This is why politicians should NOT work for news networks.

Perhaps FOX News needs a bunch of Democrats working for them to truly make the network fair and balanced.

Next Palin will blame Obama for the drop in stock and Boehner can say, "I got 98% of what I asked for!" Who's to blame? I'm not happy Obama had to sign this piece of crap deal, but it does appear he was trapped...and yes, the GOP can be called terrorists in my opinion. They are screwing with our country big time and some of you still don't get it. Hang on and watch your 401(k)'s sink and blame the real cause...the freakin' GOP'ers.

Wow, what a surprise! This still won't cause the fox devotees to question their credibility. They're hypnotized by the propaganda, lost and hopeless. In their upside down, black is white echo chamber – facts are opinions repeated over and over again. There's no basis is actual fact or reality.

For a criminal news corporation that engages in widespread cell phone hacking and police bribery, the thought that Fox New "commentators" wet their pants at the thought of objectively reporting the news is itself not particularly newsworthy.

The solution is easy. Stop pretending that she's a politician. She's a full-time political commentator. There's no chance she's going to run for president.
