Gas tax may be next tea party target

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - You may want to consider investing in some good shock absorbers for your car this fall.

Fresh from blocking any new tax increases during the debt ceiling debacle, some lawmakers in Congress may now oppose renewing the federal tax on gasoline and diesel fuel, which is used to maintain our nations highways.

I would love for the Tea Party to explain, how someone who earns 500K/year has a 33% federal tax rate but a billionaire is paying closer to 18%?

    Please, do tell!

The puppetmasters behind the astroturf are still pulling the strings. They tell their blue-collar zombies what they want to hear, so they can go wave their flags and carry their signs and think they're making a difference.

Time for a reality check. IF you are an adherent to the Tea Party philosophy, you are part of the problem. The TP agenda is the most destructive economic force we have seen in at least a generation. And the so-called 'grassroots' people contributing at the bottom of this GOP pyramid scheme are the ones who are getting screwed. They're signing away their retirement, their economic security, and volunteering to live in a 3rd world country: The United States of America.

I weep for any future that has Tea-Party at the helm.

Let's all bow down to the new emperor, the tea party! If these a-holes aren't trying to turn us into third-world, I don't know who is. We can't fix the roads and bridges now and they want to take what little we do have to spend on them away. Maybe we ought to all move back on the farm and use horses and buggies again. Damned fools!

Now they want to chop off the interstate highway system, interstate rails, and interstate commerce. I guess if you have jets and helicopters at your disposal, then you really don't need roads, rails, and bridges.

We have a Republican problem in this country. They are imploding from the inside out. Let's all pray they don't destroy everything that made this country what is *was* in the process. What this country *was*, was great. What this country *is* today, is a death spiral. It is almost as if someone is trying to slice out pieces of the government pie, so that the can collect larger pieces of it before all of it is gone.

Maybe now is time for a bit of turnabout. If the TP will propose a reduction in gas tax, the minority democrats in the house should filibuster just like the GOP did last year when healthcare reform was on the block. They should filibuster and stall, and use every loophole they can until the bill is so watered down and full of fat that it is unrecognizable anyway. Then let the GOP pass THAT if they will.

Shoe's on the other foot now, Tea Party. Have fun playing by the rules YOU invented.

Yep, nothing says "fiscally responsible economic policy" like destroying the country's infrastructure and ruining the "instrumentalities of interstate commerce." This is sure to create jobs and help the recovery.

  9. The Day of Financial Reckoning is HERE - The Great Democrat Welfare Society Ends

Let the states take care of the roads and highways in their state. It makes NO sense for the feds to be taking this money and forcing states to hire overpaid uinion workers to do the job. Just more of the Democrats using your tax money to buy off their union masters. How many billions is WASTED on maintaining a huge federal bureacracy to collect, skim and mismanage these billions? It is not like we are developing huge new interstate highways anymore.

As for the morons calling an increase of $1 in the tax, fire them immediately!! This is just the far left way of forcing us all into dinky little impractical electric cars.

Tea baggers not only want to bring us to the brink of financial collapse with a debt default, but now they want to obliterate our roadways and infra structure! Don't they know the Interstate highway system for which the gas tax helps pay for, was the product of one of their fellow Republicans...Eisenhower!

So, I'll ask, who's more dangerous to our prosperity and mere existance as a nation? The GOTP!

If the Tea party was in power during my parents and grandparents generation, there would be no roads, highways, airports, damns, or any infrastructure whatsoever. Could you imagine a large scale project being approved such as the Hoover Damn with the Tea Party in office? These people's beliefs are misplaced and they are willing to take down the country in the process. Signed–American Citizens.

So the Tea Party does not want our highways maintained. That's just great. Who needs Al Qaeda when the Tea Party is bent on destroying America.

However, if the Tea Party people die on their tours across America because the highways are not safe, then maybe it will be worth it.

"Then there's the question of federal oversight. Federal money often requires the use of union labor or comes with other stipulations.

"The Davis-Bacon law increases the cost of new roads, bridges etc. by 25% to 33%," Grover Norquist, head of the advocacy group Americans for Tax Reform, said referring to the law that stipulates how much workers on federal projects need to be paid. "Much money is siphoned off to pay union workers in subway systems or to build bike paths....not roads.""
    -–
And there you have it. This isn't about "states rights" or believing that the states could do a better job. THis is about the GOP/Teatrolls' continuing attempts to eviscerate labor rights and unionization and their desire to pay the construction and other union workers less in wages so that there is less money for dues. They view the destruction of unions and labor rights as one of the most important steps in using a massive shift towards a corporate plutocracy GOP puppet show in order to combat continuing demographic shifts that will take white majority away....you know, cuz those scary brown people like to vote Dem, so those demographic shifts are a real long-ball problem for the GOP.

BTW, going to report on the $1M given to Romney's super PAC by a shady company called W Spann, LLC that set up shop in March and dissolved itself n July right after giving his super PAC the money?

    -------------
This statement is grossly misleading. These types of laws that set prevailing wages are in place to level the playing field when it comes to public bidding on projects. NOT to line the pockets of union workers.

When companies bid on projects, it takes labor cost out of the picture and places the focus on productivity and quality of work. Bids differ in materials costs and how many hours a company estimates it will take to complete a job.

The Tea Party needs to just shut up and go away. Our entire Nation is at great risk of financial ruin right now because of the Tea Party members that insisted on serving the minority group. 28% of the GOP does not make a majority of their party. They were warned that the economy was too fragile to handle their extremism. Now the Stock market is tanking. But I suppose that Eric Cantor doesn't have anything to worry about as he has already ' bet against America" he will clean up in this mess. Get them all out. The mere threat of a Government default has created a giant landslide, and it will not be pretty, The domino effect will be felt around the World. Thank you stupid "fiscally responsible" Tea Baggers.

And no it doesn't "increase" the cost. It simply requires that workers be paid prevailing local rates instead of being used as slave labor and given piddling wages by their employers as a way for them to reduce their bids and win the public contract in the bidding process. Yeah...so actually, why don't we take the GOP's/Teatrolls' anti-union stance from this article and then connect it to the Chamber of Commerce's temper tantrum over the possible executive order that would require public contractors to reveal their political donations. Starting to get a bigger picture?

The GOP wants this to be the Banana Republic of America. They want you being paid like foreign slave labor. They are telling you in no uncertain terms that it will bring the jobs back home if you'll just accept your status as a functionally indentured servant paeon serf and work for tiny wages, a pat on the back and the right to be incinerated with your employers garbage upon retirement.

Come to think of it - it will hit baggers harder because they are all redneck hicks that live in the boonies and have to drive LOOONNNNgggg distances just to get to civilization. (At least in MOST states – look at rural AL, GA. MS, and way back in the hills in VA and WV.)

Can we please stop dealing with the poeple who are willing to cut off their own nose just to spite their face? Can we stop dealing with people who don't understand that taxes.
Taxes are what make this country great. We need that money to maintain roads and bridges and if you haven't noticed, our infrastructure is old and falling apart. We should be investing more in that. Collecting revues for that...NOT CUTTING TAXES!
CUTTING TAXES DOES NOT SOLVE PROBLEMS
