TRENDING: Musical stylings of Huckabee and Cain

(CNN) – Call it Mike Huckabee's summer tour. The former governor of Arkansas and bass player Mike Huckabee will join businessman and gospel singer Herman Cain on stage at the Iowa straw poll in Ames to "share their musical talents with straw poll attendees," one of many gigs the part-time musician plans to play at the early 2012 presidential contest.

"I am honored to have the Governor join me on stage for this historic event," Cain said in a statement. The duo will perform together at the Friends of Herman Cain tent during festivities leading up to the matchup that tests candidate strength and organization in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.

BLITZER'S BLOG: Obama's big political risk

(CNN) – Medicare is an especially touchy subject for any politician, Democrat or Republican. America's older Americans overwhelmingly love this public health care program. They have come to rely on it and, if you look at the polls, aren't all that open to major changes.

That helps to explain why President Obama took a direct swipe at the Republicans' proposals for Medicare changes when he spoke at two separate Democratic National Committee fundraising events in Washington last night.

Paul Ryan wants to fight back

Washington (CNN) - House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan is going on the offensive. He sent an email to supporters Tuesday asking for donations to help him mount an ad campaign in Iowa to counter expected Democratic attacks this week on his budget plan in the state.

The Democratic National Committee on Monday launched a campaign timed to the Ames straw poll and other related Republican presidential campaign events ongoing in the state saying in a web video "Just like Washington Republicans and the Tea Party, Republican presidential candidates want to end Medicare as we know it." In the video one of the GOP leaders featured is Ryan and includes mentions of his budget blueprint.

GOP candidate 10,000 feet up on crucial weekend

(CNN) - While most Republican presidential candidates will disperse throughout early presidential nominating states this week, Gary Johnson will be 10,200 feet above sea level in Colorado.

The former New Mexico governor and avid outdoorsman will participate in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race Saturday, a 100-mile course that begins and ends in the Central Colorado city, according to his campaign.

Credit downgrade mounts pressure on debt panel

Washington (CNN) - If there is any silver lining to the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, it might be that it adds more motivation for the special congressional committee tasked with drafting a long-term solution to the nation's mounting federal deficits.

"There's no question about the fact that this does indeed raise the pressure," said William Galston, a senior fellow specializing in governance studies at the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy think tank. "This increases the stakes, which already were very high."

New wave of Wisconsin recall elections are here

(CNN) - The fallout from the Wisconsin saga over collective bargaining rights that ignited in February continues Tuesday with six recall elections that potentially hold national political implications in the bellwether state.

Six incumbent Republican state senators are targeted in the contests that are in part a referendum on GOP Gov. Scott Walker and the target of increased political advertising and spending.
