(CNN) – Five more American troops were killed in Afghanistan. They died from an improvised explosive device. This comes after 30 Americans were killed in that Chinook helicopter shot down by the Taliban last weekend.
It’s appropriate to put the numbers into context.
The best way to increase costs in all terms is to be indecisive about a commitment to the fight. The fight will last longer and out troops will be less protected.
I still like Reagan's approach to committing troops to a fight. "I win. You lose". Otherwise, don't fight at all. And that's my point. If we are going to be in it at all, we need to be in it with nothing less than 100% what it takes to win. Quickly and decisively. Otherwise go home and let the bad guys do what they want. Half way is the worst decision.
Russia was bled dry by their invovement in Afghanistan which led to the demise of the Soviet empire. What part about learning from history does the USA not understand???
Until we get someone who has the judgment to either mount a massive military operation that includes western Pakistan, or we face the reality nothing less will work, and we pull out.

This is insane. The US has not and never will change anything in that crazy joke of a country.
And we keep killing US soldiers and spending billions.
What do you think the taliban is going to do when we have left? Become civilized???
And stop this crazy n onsense about the soldiers did not die in vain! They all died in vain because of some crazy
politicians and generals who do not understand anything.
What a bloody shame.
We'll never win in the Middle East. The Afghani friend I've had since the 1960s agrees. He is a naturalized American but returned home to fight the Soviets and knows the Taliban and his former countrymen well. He has been back in the U.S. for years but does not believe Afghanistan is ready to leave its system of warlords. We need to cut our loses and get out. It's also time to get out of Iraq and let Iraqis decide what kind of country they want. As long as we are propping up the government, the people will not stand up and demand what they want.
