Bachmann: I don’t compromise my principles

(CNN) – Fresh off a win at the Iowa straw poll, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann stood by her principles Sunday, saying in an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” that she won’t compromise her values on “big issues.”

Facing criticism that tea party members resisted compromise to reach an agreement on the debt ceiling, the Republican presidential candidate was asked to identify legislation that represented a compromise between herself and lawmakers of an opposing or alternate view. “I stand on a core set of principles but you want to continue to move in a positive direction,” Bachmann told Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley. “I’ve done that throughout my legislative career.”

“On big issues, I don’t compromise my core sets of principles.”

And in her experience, the public doesn’t favor a compromise between spending cuts and raising revenue through tax increases as a method of battling the deficit.

“I haven’t gone one place in Iowa or South Carolina or New Hampshire where anyone said, ‘Please raise my taxes,’” she argued. “Never happened.”

“People are not saying yes, raise the debt ceiling, we want you to borrow more money - it doesn’t happen…people are very upset and nervous about where the economy’s at right now.”

And for Bachmann, a win at the straw poll in Ames, a contest that measures candidate strength and organization in Iowa, also communicated a bigger message.

“People sent a message to President Obama. They said, ‘We are done with your policies, we want something very different.’”

Bachmann believes that the 2012 election will be an “economic selection,” in which she will fare well because “people want to know who can turn the country around.”

“People want job creation,” she stated. “They want the economy to turn around and [they want to] work. I have that background.”

And if she reaches the White House, Bachmann said she would revisit the policy that prevented gay service members from openly serving in the military known as “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

“The ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy has worked very well,” she said. “I would be in consultation with our commanders but yes, I probably will [reinstate the policy].”

Though she hasn’t yet decided whether to end the gas tax when it expires in September, Bachmann did say that on the matter of gay marriage she thought it imperative that judges refrain from “legislating from the bench.”

“I think it’s more important that people have a right to weigh in on the laws that they choose to live under,” she asserted. “That was the problem here in Iowa.”

Isn't Bachmann from Iowa? Her winning the straw poll in Iowa is like Mickey Mouse winning the straw poll in Disney World.
In the real world(which her mind doesn't register) She only tripled President Obama's chances of being re-elected.

Given that one of her principles is to LIE for political advantage, we already know what kind of President she would make. We've already HAD a President like that. His name was George W Bush.

She's just part of the chess game. the GOP's way of saying,"'Hey, progressive minded Americans, you don't have to vote for a black guy, you can vote for a woman."

When you start talking about NOT paying your bills, credit agencies are going to act!!
The Tea Party and Bachmann were doing just that! This IS on their shoulders! Remember this on election day!

While pretending to pander to Michele Bachmann's delusions, I believe Iowans secretly want President Obama to win
re -election. It is now obvious in their voting for Bachmann in the straw polls.

  8. No more Benedict Arnold (Tea) Party

Tea Party: Choice of Benedict Arnolds across the nation with the sole intent of destroying the United States. Look at what the terroristic traitors just did to America because they "never compromise." This strumpet needs to be thrown right in the dumpster after a good savage beating.

Here is Bachmann quote from 2007:
"Iran is the troublemaker trying to tip over apple carts all over Baghdad right now because they want America to pull out. And you know why? It’s because they’ve already decided, that they’re going to territory, they’re- they’re going to partition Iraq and half of Iraq, the western northern portion of Iraq is going to be called, the United, uh, uh, the, the uh, -oh, I’m sorry, I can’t remember the actual name of it now, but it’s going to be called, um, uh, the, the, uh, uh the Iraq State of Islam, something like that. And I-I’m sorry, I-I don’t have the official name, but it is meant to be the training ground for the terrorists. There’s already an agreement made; they’re going to get half of Iraq and that is going to be a –a terrorist free,-a terrorist safe haven zone."

Now she wants to be the President of the United States----Are you kidding me??????? Please folks, do not dumb down the US by voting for her.

What I find even more terrifying is the fact that all of these 'candidates' are the same. Every single one of them respond to the question of 'what happens to SS/Medicaid' as "your taxes won't go up". They answer this way because they are flat out going to kill both programs. And they will not allow compromise period. So far all I've heard out of ALL the GOP runners are 'more tax cuts and handouts to big business' while the middle class takes the hit. If one of these people get elected, America is over..period.

  13. Republicans elect and attract the not so smart

This sad....there is more than one person in the country willing to vote for this complete and utter baffoon. And republicans want to take money AWAY from our educational system, so that we are all so stupid, we would vote for this "thom-foolery" of a party.

Republicans elect and attract the stupid

Let's get this straight..."I don't compromise on my principles." Let's also assume Bachmann understands that other people have principles that differ with hers. If those people also refuse to compromise also, then we get nothing done. Does this intellectually challenged loon understand that? Our democracy is all about shared responsibility, balance of power, and compromise. The people who support this tea-bag "my way or the highway" ideology are the anti-American ones. Maybe they should be investigated. Michelle, could you look into that, please?

Bachmann is officially on record as a "divider" and not a "uniter". She will not attract moderate and independent voters.

Those are great words Michele and I love to hear them come out of our leaders.

BUT, 1st those leaders must have sound principles & judgement as the PRICE of ENTRY.

I`m sorry, you don`t have that and it`s not something you can learn.

Bachmann did very poorly when making her case to Candy Crowley but she got OWNED by David Gregory on Meet the Press. Bachmann's lack of understanding of the issues and what Americans want, her inability to compromise, and her past comments all indicate she is totally unqualified. If you were paying attention, she stated that she would approve of reinstating DADT, would "submit" to her husband, let God tell her what to do, and most definitely would not hire a gay person for any position. We should all be convinced by now that she is dangerous.

"And in her experience, the public doesn’t favor a compromise between spending cuts and raising revenue through tax increases as a method of battling the deficit." Clearly 73% of Americans want a combination of cuts and revenue. But in Bachmann's delusional mind that's not the case.

“People sent a message to President Obama. They said, ‘We are done with your policies, we want something very different.’” Bachmann won the straw poll against REPUBLICANS only and she thinks Obama was on the ballot. Another idiotic moment for this dimwit.

Good lord .. just what we need in the White House. Typical evangelical christian thinking. They're right on everything because of the strange way that they interpret the bible. Why compromise when you beleive that you hold the absolute truth since, if you do, everone else must be wrong. The nature of this religion as with many religions in the world is that they are so certain that they are right that they must destroy convert or destroy those that disagree.
