Rep. Wilson misses Bachmann rally

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) - It was probably a bite from a tick that kept Republican Rep. Joe Wilson from attending a rally for presidential candidate Michele Bachmann on Thursday.

"I just put a call into Joe this morning. We were hoping he was going to be here," Bachmann said as she introduced one of Wilson's staffers at a rally in downtown Columbia.

BLITZER'S BLOG: Assad, al-Maliki and Ahmadinejad: What's going on?

They coordinated their statement with similar statements from other allied leaders, including from Canada, France, Germany, Britain and the European Union.

Palin: Obama 'very tone deaf' with vacation

Washington (CNN) - While the White House is still working on the jobs proposal the President will put forth in early September, former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin has already drawn some conclusions.

Saying it will be based on his past record which she said has failed to spur growth, Palin called the upcoming plan a "third stimulus" program and said it will be counterproductive to the president's aims of creating jobs.

Pembroke, New Hampshire (CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared President Obama's call Thursday for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to step down "long overdue."

Bachmann says Obama is leading from behind on Syria

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said the president's call for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to step down is another example of Barack Obama leading from behind on foreign policy.

Following a rally in downtown Columbia, the Minnesota congresswoman read a prepared statement to reporters that said in part, "The president should have acted weeks ago to call on President Assad to step down when his regime started slaughtering and oppressing his own Syrian people. By this count now it's thousands of Syrians."

Romney and Santorum hit Obama over Syria

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney lambasted President Barack Obama's leadership Thursday saying his call for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to step down comes after too much blood has been shed in the country.

In a statement the former Massachusetts governor said the president took "far too long to speak out forcefully against Assad."
