Greenville, South Carolina (CNN) – Rick Perry received his most significant endorsements Saturday in South Carolina since jumping into the race for the White House one week ago.
Former U.S Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins will join the Texas governor at a campaign stop at Tommy's Country Ham House in Wilkins' hometown of Greenville, said Katon Dawson, former South Carolina GOP chairman who is leading Perry's campaign efforts in the state.
Wilkins was a top fundraiser for George W. Bush in his critical 2000 presidential primary win over John McCain. He served as Bush's state campaign chairman in 2004.
Longtime South Carolina Republican campaign consultant Chip Felkel said this endorsement is a sign that Perry is on a roll in the state that has a reputation for choosing the eventual Republican presidential nominee.
"[Wilkins is] the former speaker of the House, respected Republican in the state. It's a very significant pick-up for Perry," said Felkel, who is not affiliated with any candidates this cycle but previously worked on Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush's campaigns.
Felkel said President Bush visited the Ham House during the 2000 primary.
Wilkins served 25 years in the South Carolina General Assembly and was House speaker for 11 years. In 2005, Wilkins was appointed ambassador by President Bush.
Perry picked up another endorsement in the Palmetto State later Saturday from Harvey Peeler, the majority leader in the state Senate.
The presidential candidate and Senate majority leader met on Perry's campaign bus in transit from the morning event in Greenville to his afternoon event in Rock Hill. Peeler will not join Perry in Rock Hill.
"He's excited about it and he will be a tremendous asset to our team in South Carolina," Dawson said.
Bush term once more America. Elohim, please help Obama to win again in 2012, for you founded this nation of America. OBAMA 2012!
It would be a glass ceiling breaking moment having Rick Perry as our first Gay President !
I luv the pics of him with the riding crop , Leather Yeller A&M or S&M ?
Rick Perry / Bank of America
Enron / Country Wide
How many jobs did BofA terminate on Friday the 19th ?
Derek, I saw that too, about the Bank of America muttering the "we'll take care of you" quote to Slick Rick. Not sure if it was on the Rachel Maddow show or other. WOW! Everytime there is something shady coming out regarding a bank, Bank of America is involved. I would have to say at least a half-dozen times. If I had an account with them, I would certainly close it, and tell them the reason! Anyway, I predict Slick Rick will crash & burn, as will Newt and Santorum. Perry keeps saying stupid stuff, thinking this will endear him to the long-suffering people, but it won't. And in the end, it will be Crazy Bachmann & Mit Romney. Too bad for Jon Huntsman. I'm hoping he hangs in there too.
Perry is the scariest of a scary lot. The man is so far out in right field that he makes the Hitler crew seem liberal. Indeed, we are well into the "Politics of Political Despair." If you value freedom and democracy Perry and his goose stepping minion must be defeaated..
Thtas like being the winner of a BOOBY PRIZE.I guess that and a Turban would be a legitimate gift from A Red Neck state that lives of government subsidies.

In advance of the capture, death or exile of Libya`s Moammar Kaddafhi, you are directed to prepare public statements disparging President Obama.
Take care to emphasis the extreme loss of life among America`s military. Oh wait, that didn`t happen.
Be sure to talk about the budget BUSTING impact of the conflict on the American Treasury. Never mind, that didn`t happen either.
Blame the President for getting NATO to bear the brunt of the mission – yeah, that`s it. Say something about us leading from behind and about abdicating our super power status to NATO & the Arab League. Work in a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood too.
Make noise about the WPA but avoid taliking about how other President have ignored it or how Congress refused efforts by Senators Kerry & McCain to vote on the operation.
Finally avoid any mention of the demise of the chief sponsor behind the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 which killed hundreds.
Use the fall of Moammar as yet another opportunity to flipflop and attempt to turn the American people against Obama as we strive to make him fail.
I guess that speech Bachmann gave decided the people on dropping her. She goes on and on and on about the credit dropping from AAA to AA+ and saying it was President Obama's fault. When S&P said right out front it was the republicans. Especially Bachmann's tea bags who wouldn't let the bill for the debt ceiling be passed til the last minute. But then she doesn't know what's going on in her own mind, how could we expect her to know that is going on in this country.
no surprise there. that's all he will pick up.
Tommy's Country Ham House!! That just about suits his style, class, IQ, etc. perfectly. And in SC.
And any other hayseed idioms an faux cowpoke might use. When will voters grow up and realize government is not spelled "gummint."
So he picked up an endorsement in South Carolina? Now that's news. South Carolina. Home of ignorance, bigots and fake Christians. Yes, Perry fits right in.
Annie S – I couldn't agree with you more.
@Sebastian on Perry's Yell Team – that was too funny yesterday. Thanks for the laugh.
If South Carolina likes him then he must be... Oh wait a minute. Who gives a ____ what South Carolina likes.
Perry only received an endorsement from another Christian right character and does not reflect the views of all people in South Carolina. I believe it would be instructive if Pery or Bachmann got the Republican nomination and, thereby, greatly increase Obama's re-election! Folks, the Tea Party and Christian right represent a minority view in this country and it is critical that moderates and progressives get out the vote. Obama may not be the exact kind of President we wanted but do we really want to stay home and watch the Christian right take over our government!!!
Historically, the litmus test is whether the suburban Philly soccer moms will vote for a particular candidate. The Republican roundup of right wingers is just too extreme, and they'll never garner enough votes to win. If Obama continues to be weak, and show little leadership, someone like Romney could win. I might even consider voting for him, and I'm a longtime Dem. One who wants Obama to succeed, but is very frustrated with how he's caved to virtually everything the far right wing of the Republican party has wanted. We're in a real mess here, and someone better get serious, and qucikly.
@ Charlie in Maine – BTW, Hey Democrats not everything that Rick Perry wants is bad, People complain that he wants Texas to seceed from the union. This is a perfectly good idea we should encouraage it..on the condition that they take a few of those other southern state with them.
Good one! I love your idea. But a better idea would be to give Texas back to Mexico, which will save him the trouble of seceding. Maybe the Mexican citizens will make him president. Bwahahaa.
If Perry is the best the Republican's have to offer, I may have to vote third party. I agree Obama hasn't delivered...but this guy is a professional political actor who's discovered a formula for winning Republican races: 1) Groom that executive hair. 2) Wear boots. 3) Hike your boot up on a hay bale or rock or whatever is around at the time and give that "across the border Clint Eastwood look". 4) Don't appear to smart....most of the Republican base don't like people that actually study things like scientists. They get all the science learnin' they need from Rush Limbaugh. 5) Claim God is on your side. 6) Sell your soul to corporations (cause you need campaign money). If Paul Ryan was the candidate, I'd consider voting Republican, but since he's actually telling people the truth instead of just finger pointing and pandering to the lowest base voters, he can't possibly win. Rick will give the Republicans exactly what they want.....unfortunately.
Wilkins and Peeler – pulling the puppet strings. I missed that one about the CEO of B of A telling Perry "We'll take care of you!" If that's true, I'm sure BofA WILL take care of Perry to insure they control the banking industry & keep the deregulation going for them. What a 'mafia'!!
