Poll: Dead heat for Obama and GOP candidates

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is closely matched in hypothetical head-to-heads with 2012 Republican presidential candidates, according to a poll released Monday.

The Gallup survey showed Obama within the sampling error among registered voters when pitted against Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney led the president 48 percent to 46 percent while Obama was tied with Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 47 percent. The president led Rep. Ron Paul of Texas by two percentage points with 47 percent and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota with four percentage points at 48 percent.

The new figures are similar to those from a recent CNN/ORC International Poll released earlier in August, which showed Obama ahead of Perry by five percentage points, Bachmann by six percentage points and Romney by one percentage point.

Gallup surveyed 879 registered voters by phone August 17 through August 18 with a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The only thing Americans seem to excel in these days, is the latest (and may I add, the greatest) poll on whatever. The election is still fifteen months away which translates into at least another 500 polls before the election followed by "why" polls of god knows what cranks your minds. If only as much effort was spent actually solving problems, the US of A would be accomplishing far more than relying on the polling industry.

Who are these people calling. I am sure it is people that stay home all day. Not the rest of us that work two jobs. I will never trust another Republican. You really think after this congress and the last Republican President they want to do it all over again? Just ask Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, New Hampshire, and my state of Florida.
    ENOUGH!

wow I thought the GOPers at this point were supposed to be running all over the president. Well a close race is always more interesting than a blowout...but if Obama is in a close race with somebody like Palin or Bachmann it would have me questioning how bright our voters might be. I mean Perry is BAD enough.

There is no way any pole could be close to dependable this early in the game. The Republican hopefuls have not been asked
to give any details reguarding what they would have done different from President Obama or detials about how they will govern if
elected. Standing up and criticizing every decision the current president makes really leaves the Republicans looking petty.

The REAL poll is November of 2012, that's when the President will win and win big against any candidate the party of No puts up against him. The democrats will increase their numbers in the Senate and win back the House. The American people have seen how the tea Bagger run GOP operates and we don't like it. The GOP are obviously against the country when it comes to jobs, economic growth and the middle class in general. They put party ahead of everything else, and this was the party that had the saying of Country First just a few short years ago. Where is that party now? The American people will say NO to the party of NO loud and clear.

The rest of the world is laughing at us big time for even considering the likes of a Bachman or Perry. What has gone wrong with this country if that poll represents our population?. Oh, that's right, these polls are generally worthless since they are taken on phone lines during the hours that most normal folks work. Who's home to answer these questions?

WHAT? The only thing the GOP/Teabaggers have to run on is tax breaks for the rich while taking the boots to the middle class, Seniors, Children, Women, Minorities and the Enviornment. Obama 2012

Are we going to have to put up with these polls from now until the election? They change every day, depending on who is polled, and the sampling is so small as to make them meaningless. This poll questioned only 1,026 people – how does that extrapolate to the entire country over a year ahead of the election? CNN, just save your time – but then I guess the polls do generate headlines that might grab people's attention and make them click on the story. Which generates advertising revenue.

The enamor will wear off once people see the real Rick Perry. His job record is a mirage. The irony is many of the jobs are in govt or oil not because of low taxes. All those thinking of voting for Perry...look up things like Perry wanting to force 12 year old girls to get shots for cervical cancer or his Texas trans corridor project. Also, the Texas governor has little power. Obama may not be the greatest thing but Perry is a disaster.

these polls are national and mean nothing. count the electoral votes 270 to win and poll the 50 states.
win 10 big states and 5 other smaller states and thats your president. basically win the north east the west coast and the states along the great lakes and the canadian border.

I just finished watching a very interesting and informative report on Cuba. Turns out that Batista imposed a reform which is very close to what the teabaggers are trying to impose in this country minus the religious crazy side, of course. He imposed reforms where only a handful of people had the big money and the rest of the populace had either less or nothing.
Sound familiar? This is how a man like castro was able to dupe the Cuban people and bring an even worse form of government to the island nation aka communism!!

How to tell when your country needs to invest in education ? When $2.00 a gallon Michele Bachmann is anywhere at the top of a poll for the most important job in the land.

Pathetic! When the incumbent is marred by a terrible economy and has approval ratings that haven't topped 50 in a year the GOP STILL couldn't come up with a single inspiring candidate that would have made the election a slam-dunk in their favor. And Obama has not yet even started using his millions of dollars of campaign warchest advantage. (which was his great advantage last time around as well)
