Poll: Perry receives top spot

(CNN) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry is at the top of the Republican presidential field in another national poll.

According to the Gallup survey released Wednesday, Perry leads the pack among Republican and Republican-leaning independents with 29 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 17 percent, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas at 13 percent and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota at 10 percent.

The other GOP candidates received fewer than 5 percent.

In a July Gallup poll, taken before Perry officially jumped into the race, Romney was ahead with 23 percent, followed by Perry at 18 percent.

The new poll surveyed 1,040 voters via telephone between August 17 and August 21 with a sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

The fabled Republican candidates' big tent is indeed that–a big tent full of circus freaks.

Bush looks like Einstein when compared with this guy. If this guy picks the GOP nomination, the Democratic slogan for Perry should be, "Governor for sale". Corporations control the judiciary, legislative branch and the media. At this time, they only influence the exeuctive branch. With this guy in the WH, it will be complete control of all branches of US govt. Tea party is determined to make USA a third world country. The blame goes to all those independent voters if this guy enters the WH>

    1. Nice to see that the GOP embraces growing the government sector like Slick has; wait - they don't?
    2. Huntsman's prediction about alienating the rest of the population that believes in science will come to fruition.

  7. Big Time Players Make BIG TIME PLAYS

Given the lag time for any governmental policy to take effect, one thing that would push the WORLD ECONOMY in the proper direction would be a sizable drop in oil prices.

The President should deploy VP J. Biden, SecState H. Clinton & [likely SecState] J. Kerry to Saudi Arabia & Kuwait to have them boost oil production by 30% for the next 2 years. In exchange, the US will sell the Saudi's – - just as we are selling Turkey – - the Joint Strike Fighter, a system they covet. Israel will whine so B. Clinton should be deployed to assuage their feelings. Don't like the JSF? Fine, come up with some other inducement.

The world economy is under a tremendous amount of pressure that is not likely to be released soon. A bold, dramatic step like this would boost industrial output, put people back to work, bolster consumer confidence and put downward pressure on inflation. Scrapping food & health safety regulations and tax cuts for "job creators" WILL NOT GET IT DONE!

  8. seriously???

And when Palin jumps in she will get the top spot, and the guy after her etc... Just goes to show that republicans have no leadership whatsoever if there have been 8 different candidates holding "the top spot." Republicans don't have anybody.

  10. Lost in Texas FOREVER

Vote for Perry, a vote for EDUCATION in our nation. OOps sorry I forgot we're cutting education down here in the great Red state of Texas and we are already near the top of the country in high school droputs and public schools that don't graduate their students. And those droputs can join the educators in line as a statistic in our growing 8.2% unemployment rate. Fast food places and WalMart can only hire so many people. Then again don't Republicans ALWAYS want to cut education because the more educated you are the less likely you are to vote Republican. Perry is a JOKE and the more intelligent Americans will see it. Too bad so far most of them are NOT from the GOP.

Slick Rick should not be underestimated. He becomes whatever you want him to be, but be afraid, be very afraid, because unlike Dubya he's not going to be happy to have temporary custody of all the President's toys. I have a feeling Slick Rick is intent on creating an American 1000 year Republican government.

I can see it now. A white horse mounted with a silver saddle. Big Stetson hat. Cowboy boots. Spurs that jingle jangle jangle. And a big grin creasing a Texan’s face as he waves at the crowds lining up Pennsylvania Avenue. Will someone please wake me up!
