Just a joke: Bachmann's hurricane message from God

(CNN) - Michele Bachmann's press secretary characterized comments by the Republican presidential candidate, when she said Hurricane Irene was a message to Washington, as a joke.

"Obviously she was saying it in jest," Alice Stewart told TalkingPointsMemo Monday.

Over the weekend, the Minnesota Rep. turned Hurricane Irene into a campaign punch line, suggesting the recent natural disasters were acts of God.

"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."

If by joking they mean that she was having a laugh at the expense of everyone who was getting hammered by the hurricane, then yes, she was "joking". This woman is disgusting.

Poor taste, poor judgment to be joking about something that has killed people, and flooded so many and destroy people's home. I guess if you are from Minn. these storms are funny. Not so funny on the East Coast.

This lady scares the crap out of me!!! I know she was joking, but I really think she does attribute the natural disasters to a calling of some sort... I believe in GOD, but PLEASE keep GOD out of politics!!! Dogma just leads to judgment and clouded decisions!

This woman is hugely unprepared and dangerous. 8 People died as a result of this hurricane, and this woman's insensitivity deemed, " this is joke time". Why do people on the right believe they have a main line to God, when at every instance they thwart his teachings. They demagogue others with whom they disagree, they laugh at the misfortune of others, and they continuously LIE!!!!!!!!!!!!

And just as obviously, the last laugh is AT, not WITH, Bachmann. Again.

She is an idiot. I blame CNN and FOX for paying so much attention to her. Next time there is Hurricane, I think she should go in the middle of the storm and make her dumb comments. Get this lady off the stage and send her back home where she belongs or better yet send her with Palin on the bridge to no where.

It may have been a joke this time, but Conservative Republicans like Michelle Bachmann really do believe that God sends natural disasters to punish those who don't share their point of view, or who they perceive as not acting in the best interests of the United States or any other institution that they support.

What we experienced here and in other states is not a joke. Just like the bridge that collasped in Min. years ago was not a joke. People died and are homeless. Shame on Bachman for turning this into politics. Bachman needs to resign and apologize to the American people.

First rule of politics: Jokes will always go flat.

First rule of psychology: Jokes are usually wishful thinking. She may label it a joke, but it reveals her thought process and values.

Oh, I see how this works. I can do it too. The earthquake and hurricane hitting in the vicinity of DC is God's way of telling us how unhappy he is with the GOP, and the tea party birchers portion especially, for taking from the poor and giving to the rich and nearly sinking a country of over 300 million of his children. Hey, this is easy. Tasteless, yes, but easy.

  25. Democrat Class Warfare - Destroying the economy, destroying the country

Face it, Obama and the Democrats didn't get the message in 2010 and won't get it in 2012 when they get thrown out of office. It's called blind ideology. The few successes are quickly claimed while the many failures are blames on others. 4 years of this insanity is far too much.
