Bachmann points to 'great sense of humor' after God joke

(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann defended her recent comments about natural disasters in Washington, D.C. serving as messages from God, saying she was joking.

"I have a great sense of humor and I think it's important to exhibit that humor sometimes when you are talking to people as well," Bachmann said Monday at a campaign event in Miami. "Of course I was being humorous when I said that."

Her reaction was similar to her campaign's response Monday.

The Minnesota Rep. received criticism following statements she made over the weekend that equated the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene to acts of God.

"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."

At Monday's event, Bachmann said the remarks were intended to tell the president he is not listening to the American people.

Ask the people of New Jersey, New York, Vermont, etc. if they thought that was humorous.

What's humorous is that she doesn't see the irony in someone who's running on the God Ticket making fun of religion.

Frankly, I thought the hurricanes hit because Mama Nature is pissed off at the way we treat our environment.

I can see it now if she is elected president (god if your listening, don't let this happen), but there she is...sitting in the oval office, waiting for God to give her the anwer

Her ridiculous statement should immediately disqualify her from being president. This woman is a blithering idiot. One one hand she decries that gov't should be out of our lives but at the same time she, along with that dolt Rick Perry, wants the gov't to dictate who can or can not get married, who can or can not serve in the military, outlaw the constitutional right for a woman to have an abortion and to have schools teach a religious belief in "creationism". The government represents ALL PEOPLE and that includes gays,Jews,Muslims, Athiests, blacks and browns.

If she talks to God -- thats prayer.

If God talks to her -- that's schizophrenia.

".....when you are talking to people..." as opposed to when you are talking to what???

Of course you were just joking, Michelle, but how about exhibiting a modicum of good taste? Doubtful that the people suffering in the wake of natural disasters see the humor of remarks like yours.

She clearly has a sense of humor, thinking she is a viable candidate. Sadly, the joke's on America if we keep listening to this clown and her ilk.

I wonder if the families of the people killed by the storm think it was funny?

Yeah, Tony 140 – She made it clear that it wasn't Christian values – it was a JOKE. She apparently understands God's code better that the rest of us (hurricane = I'm mad at Liberals) so she was interpreting – but no. It was all a JOKE. Well, you know, Bachmann's the joke. But it's getting hard to work up a laugh anymore.

I believe she was joking and I appreciate a sense of humor, but the problem is that the joke was NOT funny.

A joke? If Bachmann wants to see what a joke really looks like, all she needs to do is look into the mirror.

Every time this nincompoop opens her mouth, I am reminded of how Dan Aykroyd referred to Jane Curtin on Saturday Night Live. 100% appropriate here.

I feel sure I know God's view on the claiming of God by the republican party. Deeds not words show the core of a preson and the deeds of the republican party are anything but treating all as a brother nor do they show much, if any concern for others.

'Sense of humor' ?? I dont think the 40-some families that lost loevd ones thought it was all that funny. The LAST thing this country needs is some idiot in the white house who says/does things that immediately give away the fact that she is an uneducated or obtuse rube who doesnt know when to keep stupid thoughts to herself.

As a wise man once said, "It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

She just lied again. She meant every word she originally said. The Christian Right (which she adheres to) have been say that (Gods wrath) for years.

  22. Sorry

she's not allowed to have a sense of humor on the campaign trail......especially if she's not funny in the first place and I'm sure those affected by the storm are not ROTFLTA'sO.....

""I have a great sense of humor"

Yes Michele, tell us again how great you are... throw humble in there while you're at it. Good to see the weather is always sunny in Bachland.

do you think we could get her to apologize for her stupidity – her ignorance – her President Obama bashing – her out of touch understanding of gays – oh the list goes on and on – how about she could just drop out of the public that would do it for me

Yes, because we all know if President Obama made that joke republicans would be down his throat in a second. I also don't see how its funny for a presidential candidate to joke about people dying in your country. Perhaps a comedian. She is a joke, but not a comedian.
