(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann defended her recent comments about natural disasters in Washington, D.C. serving as messages from God, saying she was joking.
"I have a great sense of humor and I think it's important to exhibit that humor sometimes when you are talking to people as well," Bachmann said Monday at a campaign event in Miami. "Of course I was being humorous when I said that."
The Minnesota Rep. received criticism following statements she made over the weekend that equated the recent earthquake and Hurricane Irene to acts of God.
"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it."
At Monday's event, Bachmann said the remarks were intended to tell the president he is not listening to the American people.

When one must state that he or she has a great sense of humor, that usually is not a good sign. It would be like telling a joke, getting no response, and asking those around you, "Get it?" or "Wasn't that funny?" Will Michelle go away when her "memoir" comes out?
She played the liberal media like a fiddle . . .
Hey, cut the lady a break. Don't YOU find natural disasters that claim 36 lives and cause over $10 billion in damages just hysterical?
What a pathetic excuse for a human being. Is she so devoid of compassion that she can't just admit that her comment was grossly insensitive and apologize to all those families who lost loved ones in Irene?
Who cares about her "great" sense of humor? The fact that she uses it while a few dozen people died and countless suffered property damages or wounds, indicate that she is a very sick minded person. The other one, sitting at the top of GOP polls is equally a dlusional person. Scarry Perry, that is how he should be called. As for Bachmann she should be Bachsidemann.
the only thing that is funny about Bachmann is her politics
How could anyone call out current natural disasters such as the earthquake and the hurricane that has devastated some areas and caused at least 3 dozen deaths thus far... AND using it to make a cheap point, then say it is just her humor. Frankly, it is humor that we can do without.
I would be willing to bet some astute media researcher will find other instances where Mrs. Bachman used political sound bites humorously. There are probably humous tidbits about the President, gays, liberals, other candidates, her background and training, her and her husbands use of government largess, the strength of their religion to return not just America to its rightful moral bearing, but to convert gays to straighthood. She is a very funny person. It is just unfortunate she gets to exhibit this humor from an elected position. I guess there are others out there who appreciated her brand of humor. I don't.
The jokes on you Michele. Americans see just what type of person you really are. Oh, and GOD wants you to stop using his name for your disgusting politics
Hey Michele, not all of us are stupid. You meant what you said the first time and don't have the guts to admit it.
I seriously doubt that God was laughing.
Yes Michelle, we know you have a great sense of humor. You think you can win. Now that's funny.
I can't even begin to imagine what people around the world are saying about us when we are SERIOUSLY considering this blithering idiot's run for the presidential nomination.
This is an embarrassment of Palinesque proportions people!
And for someone who pontificates endless and senselessly about God this and God that, should she be taking the name of the Lord in vain? Should she not have enough sense to know that unless Irene had turned into a downpour with NO dead and NO property damage it should've been off-limits in regards to "jokes".
What is wrong with us for making someone of her caliber think that she could buy her way into our collective psyche?
She's GOTTA GO!!!!
another fine example of what to expect from the fine classes of people who wish to lead our country to futher disasters, Michelle? what were you thinking? If you wanna diss Obama ther are many many much better ways of going about it.
But again I don't think anyone can take a comidianne seriously as a canidate GIVE IT UP!!
She's a regular Johnny Carson.
It sounded really creepily sincere to me, like she actually thought that was going to work, and the crowd certainly didn't seem to think she was joking. Are we 100% sure it's not her that's a witch instead of that other lady? "Working the weather" is one of the things we used to burn weird women in this country for doing, back when good old conservative values came straight from the Bible instead of from common sense.
Oh its so funny "joking"" about Hurricane. What a great sense of humor she has.
EVERYBODY LOUGH TILL YOU CRY!
and she want to be president, LOL, these %#$# people have no sense of civility, pathetic
This woman is beyond delusional.
She claims it is a joke to the media, but the bumpkins that were listening to her seriously believe that garbage.
If you only ever know one thing about Christians, know this: Christians believe the "Holy Spirit" resides within them and that God is a part of them. They will lie to your face "For your own good" because God told them too.
Sounds like mental illness to me.
Riiiiight. She had to back off the comment because it correctly lumped her in with the likes of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and Harold Camping (recent end of world nut, still at large). Don't be fooled, Bachmann is out to rewind freedoms just this side shy of women not having voting rights. Her mindset wants nothing more than to replace the Constitution with the Bible and ensure every child is indoctrinated with Christianity by time they are out of Kindergarten. No thanks, crackpot.
Michelle, Perry and the rest of the right wing, including the clergy, are going to bust hell wide open with their bigotry. They condemn people who don't agree with them and then try to convince people that God is on their side. While they are joking and judging, people have died.
Hey, Michelle, Those comments were totally inappropriate. You will never win the election!!
As I have said before, I am a republican. The Republican candidates that my party is putting into the race, are ALL JOKES themselves. All you have to do is listen to these NUTCASES. Run Hillary RUN.
Hmmmm I wonder if Palin will put out a tweet / facebook statement about Bachmann's sense of humor.. Becuz had that been the Prez. Obama .. we knw there would have been tweets coming at him from all angles .. hmmm
She points to her own "great sense of humor"?? Was is just granted her MIRACULOUSLY?
