Obama tells vets jobs must be created 'faster'

Minneapolis, MN (CNN) - Speaking to vets at the American Legion convention in Minneapolis President Obama again touted his jobs plan set to be unveiled "next week."

"A plan to create jobs and reduce our deficit – a plan I want to see passed in Congress. We need to get this done," the president said.

    @ Rudy
"They're baaack. Remember the fake pro-Hillary bloggers in 2008, who were actually neocons? I would like for anyone who can explain how the Stimulus failed."

First of all Rudy, I have been writing on this site for years and bashed GW just as much as I've bashed Obama. You can go back just the past few months and I've been doing it all along. I can't write on here as much as you do because I work for a living but nonetheless, there's nothing fake here.

Second, how has the stimulus failed? Look at President Obama's own words. He PROMISED unemployment would not exceed 8% if the stimulus was passed, but it ended up exceeding 10% and has been above 9% for a time period unmatched since the Great Depression. He PROMISED there were shovel ready jobs, but when pressed, he had to admit that the jobs "weren't so shovel ready". By his OWN admission, it has failed. You need to get a grip and realize the reality right in front of your face. If he can admit it has failed, you should as well.

Come on America, this is really quite straightforward. Bring home the troops from the various war zones and put them to work on domestic infrastructure projects – start pumping money into the US economy. Stop feeding the war machine or its going to be the end of your country.

Obama need to think big and think America. The repugs are shouting that taxes are too high, that's why businesses are not hiring. Then they realize that 1/3 of big businesses don't pay taxes and taxes are lowest in 60 years. They then blame uncertainty, yet they caused the mother of all uncertainty over the debt debacle that down graded our triple AAA credit rating. Now they are saying that regulations are not causing companies to hire. When will these repugs take their collective head out of their .... And stop bull crapping the American people. First question are regulations depriving companies from making money? Naa companies are making more money than any time in history, the rich had seen the Best profit in American history, so how is these regs killing jobs. Why should big businesses hire folks when they can use less people along with computer systems and robots which cost them a heck of a lot less, that means mo money mo money mo money going into their pockets. Why you think the rich wealth have grown 400 percent while the middle class have stagnated or decline. These repugs thinks they can tame greed, they've got another thing coming.

"We have to create more jobs, and do it faster."

That was not a smart remark to a group of adults. That's more like something you would say to your kids.

One problem is that our millions and millions of manufacturing jobs that have left our shores are just simply not coming back. Not ever. Not unless there is some sort of dramatic and destructive shift in the global economy. Manufacturing has two major costs; labor and shipping. Labor is labor, and it does cost less to manufacture in other countries. Shipping of the raw gods is less expensive than the shipping of the finished goods, which must be handled with care, packaged and protected. For most products, the cost of shipping finished goods has a larger impact on cost than labor. So manufacturing has moved not only because of cheaper labor, but because of lower shipping costs.

America and Europe are no longer the major consumers of most high ticket items and other manufactured goods. There are rising economies and demand for these goods around the globe, especially in China and India. There are more potential consumers in either of those markets than US and Europe combined.

THAT is what is really driving manufacturing out of this country. Whining about labor costs is just a smoke screen to bust unions and organized labor.

One of Obama's mistakes is that he apparently thinks big companies are going to be doing the hiring. Not so. We know better than that. Not his General Motors or his big banks or his big Insurance companies. Even his 'green' companies aren't going to be able to make a significant dent in the super high nationwide unemployment.

Small businesses are now and will continue to be the best opportunity for addressing unemployment. But not if he throws all the money at big business so they can invest it overseas and make better profits. Ever wonder where all that money they threw at big banks went? Not to small businesses. It went to big wealthy businesses who are easier to lend to so they could invest overseas. Not quite what he said was going to happen, was it? He doesn't have a clue.

I feel sorry for Obama. His intentions are good but he is governing with a bunch of GOP obstructionist. Regardless of what President Obama jobs plan is the Repubs will be against it. This is the party that wants the President to fail at all cost. The GOP want to destroy our government and get a Repub elected in 2012 and will stop at nothing short to do it.

  9. The Greedy Old Pigs have lost their minds!

"A True Centrist" is a true phony and a real liar. President Obama NEVER "promised" unemployment would level off at any given rate. When a blatant liar like ATC posts blatant lies, we should give his words the credence they deserve, which is zero.

  10. Democrat Class Warfare - Destroying the economy, destroying the country

"We have to create more jobs, and do it faster."
    =======================================
Obama is totally clueless and continues to prove it. Businesses love, crave and demand STABILITY. Obama has shown over and over he is the essense of INSTABILITY with his constant demonization of businesses, his willingness to flaunt the bankruptcy laws and takeover companies, threats of raising taxes, massive unpredictable changes to our healthcare system (and employer costs), massive new regulations, running up huge debt that companies know THEY will be asked to pay for and on and on.

The best thing Obama could do to create jobs is to resign today and take the socialist Democrats in the Congress with him. Otherwise people in this country better get used to the high unemployment.

"One of Obama's mistakes is that he apparently thinks big companies are going to be doing the hiring. Not so. We know better than that. "

Really? Point to it without ignoring every single time he has talked about investing in infrastructure (which is clearly not big business), investing in education to spur innovation (which gives rise to small business) and investing in already existing innovation efforts such as alternative energy (which is almost exclusively small businesses right now). Go ahead. Explain to us why your conclusory statement is even remotely accurate and not just another blind swipe knee-jerk criticism that fit the moment.

@True Centrist: Obama said nothing of the sort. "8%" were the words of an advisor speaking about the weekly jobs figures. I believe the advisor misspoke when she said that unemployment "would not rise above 8% for the rest of the year." That was spoken in April 2009, I think. Unemployment was already over 7%, and we were losing 500K jobs per month. I believe the woman meant to say "rest of the month", not rest of the year. Unemployment never exceeded 10%, and it actually fell under 9% until Republicans took power and started enacting spending cuts, which has killed hundreds of thousands of jobs.
