Obama backs off tough clean air regulation

New York (CNNMoney) – After weeks of Republican attacks over tightening environmental regulations, President Obama said Friday he would halt a planned increase in clean air standards.

In a statement released just hours after the U.S. Labor Department said the economy created no new jobs in August, Obama said he told Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson to withdraw the draft Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards.

This is unfortunate. When is human life going to be more important than business profits to the people we elect to represent us?

Can we have the Tea Party just breathe the output from a factory smokestack for a few minutes, then ask them what they think about those 'oppressive environmental regulations' ? If any are left alive, that is...

The only reason the Right would have issues with environmental regulations is if they were completely in the pocket of big business and industry. I'll take 'job-killing' regulations any day – over 'people-killing' toxins in my water, air, food, etc...

Telling the EPA to back of on new regulations that the private business sector said would cost them billions and was adding to uncertainty and was impeding expansion and creating jobs, was a great decision. The private business sector had been asking for this for a long time and Republicans were preparing to pass a bill to attempt to block them from being implemented.
So thank you very much President Obama.
This is just one of a sizable list of regulations indentified by the private business sector that are holding them back from expanding and creating jobs. At the top of the list is Obamacare with numerous regulations, mandates and business taxes woven in it. I don't see Obama being willing to do much regarding Obamacare. But this EPA decision is at least is a start.
In a short period of time Obama has gone from demanding a clean debt ceiling bill to asking the super committee to come up with more deficit reduction than they are currently tasked to come up with. He is now saying that modifications are needed for Medicare and Social Security, two programs considered untouchable by progressives. And now he has agreed to ask the EPA to back of on these new regulations.
He has a long ways to go yet, but we might transform Obama into a good conservative yet.
His progressive base is furious about his compromise with Republicans on spending cuts and for even suggesting modifications on Medicare and Social Security. They will likely be angry about this EPA decision.
It remains yet to be seen if Obama will be willing to move anymore, but whatever movement there is, Republicans should thank him for it.

Yep. Allow the Koch Brothers to continue to pollute the air. That's just what we need: more smog.

    Obama: 'The compromiser in chief'.

Is there anything he can do that the Right wont water down or throw a fit about till it is completely useless and unrecognizable? Grrrr.....

  6. WTF!

Pres.Obama has been to accommodating to Republicans and Big business and the narrative is developing that he's weak. The Pres.Obama needs to save himself and the Democrats with a "Bold Jobs Plan" that includes clean energy. Everybody likes a fighter and that includes "Independents"voters. Pres.Obama needs to stop being the adult, because this strategy makes him look like a push over.

When willobama realize that every time he sides with the repugs, it always a disaster, then the repugs then acted like they had nothing to do with it as they lambast Obama with criticism; first Obama didn't lesson to his liberal base to make healthcare solvent by bringing it to the public sector like social security and Medicare, which had never ran a deficit and became the government main source of rescue every time the government get into a jam. Obama went with the repugs to push health insurance to the private sector, and as soon as he did they slammed him. Second Obama went against his vice president who called for a covert operation in Afghanistan, Obama rejected that and went with the repugs policies of over welling force, when the deficit started exploding the repugs screamed that Obama is spending too much. The repugs high jacked the nation for Obama to extend the bush tax cuts which haven't added jobs for 10 years but get the rich super rich, Obama went against his base once again, now when jobs are not being added the repugs screamed that obam's policies are not working. The debt debacle, well you guys saw how unreasonable and despicable the repug acted causing our credit ratings to be down graded. Obama we don't want poison in our food and waters. We are having too much natual disasters already as mother nature is fore warning us on our ruinous ways. Stop letting the repugs shape your presidency.

  10. The Elephant In The Room

Mitt Romney said his "jobs plan" [translation lower corporate taxes] would bring jobs back from China. Let's take a QUANTITATIVE LOOK at what he claims.

Corporations have shipped jobs overseas, not because of LOWER TAXES but because of LOWER WAGES & low [NO] BENEFITS. Chinese workers earn 20% of what American workers earn. Indian workers earn 33% of what Americans earn.

For products SOLD in AMERICA and MADE in AMERICA, the breakdown looks something like this.

    Revenue (or Sales) = $1.00
Cost of Good Sold (or Materials) = $0.35
Cost of Touch Labor (Wages) = $0.35
    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
Gross Margin (Gross Profit) = $0.30
    Selling,General & Admin Exp = $0.15
    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
    Earnings Before Interest &Taxes = $0.15
    Income Taxes (@35%) = $0.05
    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -
    Net Earnings [Income] = $0.10

Now go back to the ine labelled WAGES and take that 35 CENTS and reduce it to 20% for China so now it is 7 CENTS. [or make it 12 CENTS for India]. Since the Corporation is only paying 5 CENTS in taxes [at the 35% rate] you could reduce the tax to ZERO and still not overcome the Pre-tax or After-tax benefits of allowing products to be made in China or India and sold in America.

Don't be fooled by the Republican talking points. The primary thing lowering taxes will do is put more money in the pocket of corporations to distribute to shareholders and to boost corporate executive bonuses. Meanwhile, the generic citizen will have to carry an even HIGHER portion of the cost of government [ DOD spending, Irene, etc.].

It's funny how the GOP/Tea Baggers are so concerned about leaving "their children" a government in debt, yet could care less about leaving them with a polution environment. Republican attacks over tightening environmental regulations just goes to show their concern for big business to be allowed to pollute and destroy this planet at all cost. Heck, most of the Repubs/Tea Baggers think climate change is a hoax!

It used to be that companies with large smokestacks had to install air quality monitoring equipment, and record the measurement histograms on a circular chart. If the measurements of some chemicals exceeded certain levels, then an auto-dialer would report this to the EPA. The dialing worked sort of like your home security system calling a central station, who in turn would route the message to the appropriate response team. Sounds expensive, right? Not really.

Most smokestacks are connected to energy producing boilers; i.e. car plants produce steam to drive turbines that produce compressed air. These boilers are the size of an average 2 story home, like Archie Bunker's House. To ensure proper and efficient operation of the boiler, you monitor the exhaust gases for oxygen, carbon monoxide, unburnt fuel, etc. Your car does the same thing, actually. The only real net cost of these auto-dialers is the cost of the dialer and making sure you keep your equipment properly maintained and calibrated. The dialers used to report information about the systems that was already being monitored and recorded anyway.

Contrary to Republican mythology, Obama is not a liberal. He is actually a moderate who adopts mainstream Republican ideas (individual mandate, cap-and-trade). Unfortunately, because he adopts these ideas, Republicans now call these mainstream Republican ideas socialism.

Obummie is the most splineless POLITICAN I've ever seen. He will do anything to get re-elected. He knew the EPA was killing jobs and somehow thought that people wouldn't notice. Know he says let's hold off on the EPA further killimg jobs until 2013. Don't you people get it? Obummie is covering his wolf body in sheep's clothing to get another 4 years to destroy the country. Anyone that would vote for him is a sucker.

Oh, great. Now is no time to pussy-out to the Republican morons with regard to the health of America and the world as a whole. Come on, Mr. President. We all voted for you because we thought you had a pair of balls big enough to stand up to the greedy, money-grubbing pinheads who are so anxious to sell us all out in favor of the rich getting richer. Who's left to stand up for reality if it's not you? Which planet are we going to live on once Earth has been made uninhabitable? WHy do Republicans love money so much and love their fellow humans so little?

I am glad to see Obama finally wake up and smell the coffee. It might be too late for him though. The lefties would rather you enjoy slightly cleaner air while you huddle in your box under the bridge, unemployed, homeless and hungry because your job got whacked to pay for these new rules and regs. Not the Hope and Change we want.
