TRENDING: Comedian tells 'special needs' joke at Palin event

Washington (CNN) – In comedy, timing is everything.

And minutes before Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and parent of a child with Down syndrome, made her much-anticipated speech in Iowa, Los Angeles-based comedian Eric Golub told a joke that compared liberal political ideology to “special needs children.”

After commending Palin on raising her son Trig while balancing other responsibilities, Golub made the analogy.

“For that reason alone, the left should worship Sarah Palin and adopt her as one of their own,” Golub said. “Because the leftist haters are an entire political ideology of special needs children.”

Golub continued by saying that liberals are needy and feel entitled.

“And unlike Trig, they aren't very lovable,” Golub said. “All you hear from them is give me, give me, I need, I need, I want, I deserve, I’m entitled – no you don’t.”

Since announcing she had a child with Down syndrome in 2008, Palin has defended the special needs community in a number of instances.

In February 2010, Palin called for Rahm Emanuel, then-White House chief of staff, to be fired after he called liberal groups thinking of running ads against Democratic lawmakers “retarded.”

When an episode of Fox’s “Family Guy” mocked Trig that same month, Palin wrote in a post to her Facebook followers that it felt like “a kick in the gut.”

She also included a response to the "Family Guy" episode from her daughter, Bristol Palin.

“As a culture, shouldn’t we be more compassionate to innocent people – especially those who are less fortunate,” Bristol wrote. “Shouldn’t we be willing to say that some things just are not funny?”

Palin never mentioned the remark while speaking at the tea party-affiliated “Restoring America” rally in Indianola, Iowa.

Charlie Gruschow, co-founder of Tea Party of America, said he never heard the comment or met the comedian before the event.

"Some of the people on staff had heard him speak before and thought he would be a good person to break up and entertain the crowd," Gruschow said.

This isn't the first time Golub made the comment. He also used it while speaking at a 2010 convention for the conservative organization Young America's Foundation.

Palin's team could not be reached for comment.

CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Not the best choice of analogies Golub. Being that you were at a Palin event, I'm sure he meant well, But a better comparison would be the spoiled brats who in the news lately when their ;awsuit against their mopther was thrown out of court.

America is so SICK of S.P. that it is getting to the nauseating stage right now. Enough with this woman who wants to return to the FAILED Republican policies of the past! Enough of her already! Republicans have No Plan for Jobs, No Plan for Education, but they Do have a plan to cut what those in their senior years including the sick, middle-class and the poor have worked for all of their life working 30, 40, or more years so that now they are entitled to receive the money that was promised to them that they have been PAYING into i.e., Social Security for one! The Republican's only plan is to tax the poor people and the middle class but exempt their rich counterparts. Shameful! That is why America Must Not Vote For One Republican in 2012. They will leave you out in the cold while they enjoy warm brandy with the richest of the rich and will laugh all the way to the bank after you give them your vote. Think about that!

Unless You Are Independently Wealthy, You Can't Afford To Vote Republican!

Did the criminal banksters feel needy and entitled when Bush and Hank Paulson gave them over trillion in the 2008 TARP bailout?

I always loathed Palin, but I did sympathize with her after the Family Guy incident. Just because someone endorses a vile ideology doesn't mean they deserve such brutally callous treatment.

But now, it would appear that it's only wrong to joke about mental handicaps when it doesn't further your goals politically. If there was a sincere bone in her body, she would rant and rave at this comedian, just as she did FG and Emanuel. Seriously, that woman can burn in hell.

    Special Needs Children
I was immediately struck by the use of "special needs children" in a derogatory manner: not by the political agenda. I found that attitude more vile than any party politics posting going on here. So I am dismayed that the primary concern here and usually the only concern here seems to be about the party politics and not special needs children. I have found most people don't realize 1/10th of what special needs children are capable of doing and they really don't care to know either. -But let's not concern ourselves with that.?

What do the people on the right intend to do when they are elderly? Lots of jobs don't pay well enough for people to save anything. What do they plan to do if they are disabled? Often retirement savings are used up to pay bills while waiting for Social Security.

T/GOPhers are really rushing to outdo one another by defining "the lowest common denominator". Can't touch the Constitution (guns, speech, cutting mandated Federal Programs), but, hey lookie here, we need to Fix the Constitution's with a Balanced Budget Amendment, destroy the Census, Neuter the IRS, and in the process ignore doing their job.

I love how the Queen of "crosshair" politics and pseudo military speech was calling for compassion. I can only imagine the villages she would carpet bomb to prove how much of a cowgirl she is as president. Believe me, I know some villages do need carpet bombed, im also conscious and see this lady is a stooge.

"In Texas": I am the same as you – Too Ashamed of the hijacked Republican Party, too proud to be a Democrat. I have been Non-Affiliated all my life, with strong affinity to John McCain. Nowadays, with electronic voting, I fear my vote may be similarly "hijacked" unless I submit a paper absentee ballot (sidestepped again) or swallow my pride and join the Democrat Party just to be able to vote in the primaries. The clock is ticking; there is NOBODY running that has the True-Blue Republican Branding as John McCain. Its the Devil's Own Bargain: take charge or be taken advantage of.

Is this a variation of the more familiar "liberalism is a mental disorder" slogan ?

That is right out of the Bolshevik playbook. In Stalin's Russia dissidents were declared mentally insane and committed to asylums.

The Bolsheviks may have been socialists, but they despised liberalism, as did both Hitler and Mao. They all hated liberals.

In fact Mao once said that communism could never succeed in China as long as there were liberals there.

One need only read the countless comments from conservative, right wing readers who refer to Democrats as "libtards" to realize that they can not even take a lesson from their political leaders, that compassion for those less fortunate has been emptied from their hearts and their veins, and the soulless shells that remains of their existence would leave the vulnerable, the "special needs", the poor, the sick to fend for themselves.

Anyone offended by this has no sense of humor or never watched stand up comedy before. This is nothing compared to the usual stuff you get in a comedy routine, often its about pushing boundaries. Racism, complete lack of taste, lack of morals etc. is often the punchline of many jokes. Its comedy, even if its not the best, its not like this was clearly to insult anyone other than liberal/left wing. Would it have been more acceptable to say "the left wing are stupid crybabies" or something similar?

Im not left or right, its not about left and right, its about right and wrong.. .and this is simple comedy, bad taste for some maybe, but nothing that is "hateful" or anything, its just people turning nothing into a news story.

For a mother with a kid with special needs, shouldn't she being spending large amounts of time with that child? By the way the Tea Party should of come out a little sooner before GWB was leaving office. Nobody was complaining when gas was $ 4.50 A gallon, Houses were over inflated (rates were lower but on over inflated prices). BTW people don't always lose there house because of over spending...sometimes they have pull money out to save their lives due to cancer...Why, because medical companies costs keep rising....Think about holes are always newly erected in Vegas, and Private Hospitals
    Are always building new wings....

What has happened to the U.S.? Any idiot can take a stage and get coverage by CNN and the rest of the media. It is incredible. That is why I am taking my retirement and leaving. If any of the idiot Republican candidates get elected there will be an evacuation comparable to Castro taking over Cuba. Good luck to those left behind. Maybe we should start giving an IQ test for voters and politicians.
