TRENDING: Comedian tells 'special needs' joke at Palin event

Washington (CNN) - In comedy, timing is everything.

And minutes before Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and parent of a child with Down syndrome, made her much-anticipated speech in Iowa, Los Angeles-based comedian Eric Golub told a joke that compared liberal political ideology to “special needs children.”

After commending Palin on raising her son Trig while balancing other responsibilities, Golub made the analogy.

“For that reason alone, the left should worship Sarah Palin and adopt her as one of their own,” Golub said. “Because the leftist haters are an entire political ideology of special needs children.”

Golub continued by saying that liberals are needy and feel entitled.

“And unlike Trig, they aren't very lovable,” Golub said. “All you hear from them is give me, give me, I need, I need, I want, I deserve, I’m entitled – no you don’t.”

Since announcing she had a child with Down syndrome in 2008, Palin has defended the special needs community in a number of instances.

In February 2010, Palin called for Rahm Emanuel, then-White House chief of staff, to be fired after he called liberal groups thinking of running ads against Democratic lawmakers “retarded.”

When an episode of Fox’s “Family Guy” mocked Trig that same month, Palin wrote in a post to her Facebook followers that it felt like “a kick in the gut.”

She also included a response to the "Family Guy" episode from her daughter, Bristol Palin.

“As a culture, shouldn’t we be more compassionate to innocent people – especially those who are less fortunate,” Bristol wrote. “Shouldn’t we be willing to say that some things just are not funny?”

Palin never mentioned the remark while speaking at the tea party-affiliated “Restoring America” rally in Indianola, Iowa.

Charlie Gruschow, co-founder of Tea Party of America, said he never heard the comment or met the comedian before the event.

"Some of the people on staff had heard him speak before and thought he would be a good person to break up and entertain the crowd," Gruschow said.

This isn't the first time Golub made the comment. He also used it while speaking at a 2010 convention for the conservative organization Young America's Foundation.

Palin's team could not be reached for comment.

CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

If Palin were to be consistant in her criticisms of people defaming the "special needs" persons she should have immediatedly criticized her warm-up "comedy" entertainer, but she didn't. Tells you worlds of truth about her true perspectives.

How classless. She parades around a guy who thinks its OK to tell jokes about special needs children. What happened to that "momma bear protecting her cubs". Looks more like she's willing to eat her young if it will put a buck in her pocket.

Just another case proving that Republicans have no knack for, and shouldn't even attempt, humor. It always comes across as simple meanness.

    There are two issues:
Palin does not take care of her child with special needs. If she really cared for her children, she would stay home and do so.
Taking care of people with needs should be the responsibility of the community not the government. By the time my taxes get processed by the government, there's really little left to help people. I rather help directly.

so many misconceptions. Many of us liberals aren't "give me give me", but "share and care", but don't forget to assist the least among us. too often the right folks think they've created their universe and so should everyone else. the truth is many of them are from very afluent families to begin with who are greedy , selfish, self centered, don't care to understand anyone who isn't white or born rich. not everyone landed in the "right" spot at birth to have comfy lives. I just want the struggling Americans remembered, in this economy those ultra right who still have luxurious incomes may find themselves "in need someday" The poor often landed in the "wrong" place and don't have as many connections as the "priviledged" from birth on....quit generalizing about the left and I'll see if any of the "right" care, share, give a darn about anyone but themselves. I believe their greed and corruption led us into the mess were in today in the economy ( big rich banks, big rich wallstreet, big rich oil companies, etc, etc, ) There is really nothing "right" about a lot of the right.

Ah! But if it is HER side that is using special needs people – then of course, it's NOT a problem!! Once again, what a hypocrite!!!

Social Security is NOT an entitlement. It is NOT actuarial. Current recipients receive benefits far beyond anything ever paid in, even at the most wistfully optimistic rates of return. It is a WELFARE program, plain and simple. It needs to be understood this way, and to be means tested, and the same with Medicare. What on earth does a retiree with a 6 figure income need a supplemental income? Why in the world can't retirees with 6 figure incomes pay at least some of their own healthcare? Is it too much to ask the affluent to actually pay their own way? Apparently so it would seem. This is the worst aspect of the whole so-called 'tea party' movement (an apt name if ever there was one to those who know more than the myths about that historic event!)...they oppose big government, except when it's THEIR big government...they oppose government spending, except when it's spent on THEM. As a 'small government-libertarian' perspective there are aspects that are encouraging...but the overall impression is a sense of jealous entitlement and parochialism.

  11. Puzzled by Palin

I continue to be puzzled by the fact that Palin's absolutely correct and justified sensitivity about humor about special needs doesn't seem to extend to sensitivity toward people with mobility difficulties – as in people who have had spinal cord injuries and would be called "lame" in many quarters. Does she think it's okay to use "lame" as a perjorative when she talks of "lamestream media"? Why has she never been challenged on this issue?

Isn't it true that Obama himself told a "special needs" joke on the Late Show with David Letterman? In this instance some comedian said it at a Palin event, she didn't even say it, but the press tries to lay blame on her anyway. Ugh

Golub's comments goes to show you that he doesn't know what he's talking about! He is confused about his support of the conservatives and doesn't know how to define-the-line. Stingy people are just selfish on EVERY LEVEL and they spend more time and money trying to figure out ways NOT to help the needy and NOT to give relief to the poor and UN-DOING any efforts made to do so. Before this recession, the POOR made up 1% of the total U.S. Population and the middle-to-moderate income the next larger percentage and the wealthy – well you can see where they are! Wealthy have a right to be wealthy – it is their own efforts (good and bad) and inheritances, and good fortune. However, it is not fair to hate your neighbor as these venom-spewers are doing in your OWN COUNTRY. Awful..... this mistake was the call of the day - IF IT REALLY WAS A MISTAKE! Until some of these thieves get exposed for all their corruption and their money yanked from them they will keep singing this "hate-tune" about the poor and less fortunate. A giver never lacks (in so many ways) and a receiver finds a way to give back, especially when they're appreciative. These folks could care less what happens to America, they're unpatriotic and American enemies claiming to be "Americans" – unbelievable. Sarah Palin needs to go back to Alaska and stay there! She is not a "needed voice of poison" here in America.

Yawn . . . .yawn again . . . . lots of rhetoric and no substance. The Repbulican offerings and their ramblings are like iceberg lettuce . . .white with no (nutritional) value, not very appetizing, and cheap when it comes to offering a solution other than bomb them ( "them" being anyplace or any group not made of white Christians) and make sure our wealthy supporers and members get wealthier at someone else's expense. The problem with losing the Republican party is a) we will have no one to laugh at and make fun of except tea baggers.

And we continue to pay attention to this weirdo? That is the reason why CNN and others keep posting these stories. Palin is irrelevant but our focus on her just keeps her nasty memory "alive".

The smart thing to do is for Palin to come out and end all support for special needs kids. They will never 'get better'. They will never help the American economy move forward. They are a drain on finances and what little work they somehow manage to accomplish will never be able to support themselves adequately.

End all support for them, let their families deal with them, and free up that money to help good, honest, hard-working Americans GET JOBS. We have a retard as president, we don't need to coddle all the retards of this country.
