Washington (CNN) - In comedy, timing is everything.
And minutes before Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and parent of a child with Down syndrome, made her much-anticipated speech in Iowa, Los Angeles-based comedian Eric Golub told a joke that compared liberal political ideology to “special needs children.”
After commending Palin on raising her son Trig while balancing other responsibilities, Golub made the analogy.
“For that reason alone, the left should worship Sarah Palin and adopt her as one of their own,” Golub said. “Because the leftist haters are an entire political ideology of special needs children.”
Golub continued by saying that liberals are needy and feel entitled.
“And unlike Trig, they aren't very lovable,” Golub said. “All you hear from them is give me, give me, I need, I need, I want, I deserve, I’m entitled – no you don’t.”
Since announcing she had a child with Down syndrome in 2008, Palin has defended the special needs community in a number of instances.
In February 2010, Palin called for Rahm Emanuel, then-White House chief of staff, to be fired after he called liberal groups thinking of running ads against Democratic lawmakers “retarded.”
When an episode of Fox’s “Family Guy” mocked Trig that same month, Palin wrote in a post to her Facebook followers that it felt like “a kick in the gut.”
She also included a response to the "Family Guy" episode from her daughter, Bristol Palin.
“As a culture, shouldn’t we be more compassionate to innocent people – especially those who are less fortunate,” Bristol wrote. “Shouldn’t we be willing to say that some things just are not funny?”
Palin never mentioned the remark while speaking at the tea party-affiliated “Restoring America” rally in Indianola, Iowa.
Charlie Gruschow, co-founder of Tea Party of America, said he never heard the comment or met the comedian before the event.
"Some of the people on staff had heard him speak before and thought he would be a good person to break up and entertain the crowd," Gruschow said.
This isn't the first time Golub made the comment. He also used it while speaking at a 2010 convention for the conservative organization Young America's Foundation.
Palin's team could not be reached for comment.
CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.
wow!finally inteligent voices being lifted
That was a joke? It sounded more like complaining to me.
The Quiter-in-Chief uses Trig more like a prop than her own offspring. BTW, who is the parent while she stump speeches?
One of the first things Palin did while in office in Alaska was cut funding for early intervention for children with special needs. Only after her child was born did she change her position. Meanwhile those families who needed help were left blowing in the wind in Alaska. She is no friend of the Special Needs Community. This woman has no ethics when it comes to using others for her own goals.
Once again their rules do not apply to them. Had Bill Maher made the same joke Palin her employer Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck would have acted "retarded". What because I'm not a teabagger I can't use terms like that in a joking manner? Hypocrites. The joke also points to how they phrase their arguments in order to get naive people to vote against their best interests. "I want, I need, I'm entitled" They then label our social safety nets as "entitlements" and prey on those naive people to back them up. The people think "No one gave me anything. I had to work so go to work you lazy bum and keep your hands off my Medicare you Socialist" These people don't know the difference between a filibuster and a bellybuster much less what programs the Right really wants to cut. They just hate people who feel entitled therefore something labeled "entitlements" must be bad. They're all a bunch of morons following a group of even bigger morons.
Plain is a Special Needs politician. She needs attention or else like the Wicked Witch and water, she will melt away.
Did Kathy Griffen's special have that bit where Levi told her Sarah referred to Trig as "my retarded baby?"
Sarah Palin: would be nobody if the media would stop reporting. But they have their darlings to hype and their trolls to ignore. Sorry Ron Paul.
@star, unfortunately these so-called news agencies are owned by corporations who will not allow for reporting against conservatives and their Republican supporters. Gone are the days of Edward and Bernstein.
Well, that sounds like an accurate description of lefties, this is non-news.... Nothing to see here, move along...
It's interesting that they constantly dumb down liberal philosophy to just an extremely cynical take on an understanding of liberal economics that's as shallow as a rain puddle. In fact, they seem to insist on couching it in terms of individual wants and needs. To all of you who don't know, liberal economics is a macro-economic philosophy...it seeks to blunt that part of capitalism that is, by its very nature, rigged against those who actually do the work in society but do not have the advantage of capital (the control of which, and access to which, is the only way to better your lot in a capitalism, hence the name).
The result is that America looks nothing like other capitalisms such as India, Brazil, or the Phillippines, where a tiny percentage of the population is super-rich while the vast majority live hand-to-mouth in a shantytown. It was this liberalism that created the middle class, and its inception in the early 20th century was followed by the greatest economic century for any country in the history of mankind. To reduce that rich philosophy to "liberals are needy and entitled," is not only disingenuous, it's downright ignorant. And the ignorant lap it up in Tea Party meetings all over the country.
It's true, tea birthers voted for boosh...twice. They'd do this tea birther the same.
Keep marginalizing there CNN...that's about the only thing your good these days!
that's in poor taste. boo!
Speaking of Trig, when was the last time ANYONE actually saw this kid with his mother? For that matter, when was the last time you think HE saw his "mother"?? He would probably go nuts, no pun intended against his mother, but he would go nuts if he was taken away from his nanny. Probably the only mother figure he knows. Agreed I am not a psychiatrist and I dont play one on TV. That family has problems.
Nevermind Palin's son — the "comedian" insulted half the population of the U.S.
I've voted Democrat all my life, and not once have I received or asked for a "handout."
The bigger joke is that CNN continues to find Sarah Palin news worthy. We already know she is a complete moron so why torture us with more coverage. This is just aother symptom of America's decline.
Palin keeping mum on this outlandish joke speaks volumes about her. She is using her son's malady as a weapon.
I thought they hired a comedian.
The joke he told was pretty retarded.
more than half of america is retarded. hence those 8 years of a Bush
Like most of the members of the so called party of family values Ms palin means her family not everyones family As for the rest of us like most of her fellow republicannabils She would just as soon devour our children and elders if only they could figure out a way to profit from it
Soon comedians will be out of business because of political correctness there will be no subject matter allowed to be joked about, fags are no long allowed to be talked about, now the term retarded or special needs is going to be banned. I guess I'm gonna get my ear muffs and football helmet on and ride off on my scooter to a place where we can still tell jokes.
It says leftist haters are equal to special needs children. So it could be calling the leftists haters and equal to special needs children or it could be saying people who hate leftists are equal to special needs children. If any of you would vote for this skank then you have bigger problems than the average American. God help us please don't run for POS Sarah. We don't need a money grubbing crackwhore to lead our country into doom. The others will do it just fine without you.
Get over it people and get a life.
