Bachmann: Why is there a Department of Education?

(CNN) - Painting herself as a "constitutional conservative" Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann told Sen. Jim DeMint's forum Monday that if elected president she would look to get rid of the Department of Education, among other things.

"Because the Constitution does not specifically enumerate nor does it give to the federal government the role and duty to superintend over education that historically has been held by the parents and by local communities and by state governments," she said, responding to a question by DeMint, a popular figure among the tea party movement.

Another item on the chopping block: The Affordable Care Act.

People "see that the current government is acting outside the bounds of the Constitution. Probably the most obvious would be this, Obamacare and the individual mandate that is unconstitutional and is currently contained in Obamacare," she said.

Throughout the question and answer, Bachmann highlighted her understanding of the Constitution and the need to return to a limited federal government.

"And when I'm working with the Congress of the United States, my guiding principle will be that the government works best when it acts within the limitations of the Constitution," she said. "The current president of the United States has failed to demonstrate an understanding."

When asked about her jobs program, Bachmann pointed to her past as a tax litigation attorney and small business owner.

"(I) believe in profit and actually believe profit is a good thing and that we should encourage that in this country," she said. Bachmann called for a restructuring of tax rates for businesses – highlighting her experience in that area.

When asked if she would try and overturn Roe v. Wade, which gives women the right to an abortion, Bachmann said she would put forth a human life amendment and do everything in her power to restrict abortions.

  2. Bachmann Doesn't Make Sense

"When asked if she would try and overturn Roe v. Wade, which gives women the right to an abortion, Bachmann said she would put forth a human life amendment and do everything in her power to restrict abortions."

    But... but...

"Bachmann highlighted her understanding of the Constitution and the need to return to a limited federal government."

So which is it? Either she wants the government in my uterus or she doesn't!

The only thing on the chopping block should be the Republican Party. Get rid of the Department of Education, women's right to their own bodies, health care for millions? And claiming Obama doesn't understand the constitution! He is a constitutional law expert. She doesn't even know where Revolutionary war battles were actually fought! She is a good looking moron, who objects to government intrusion in our lives while collecting money from that same government. She doesn't want government intruding into our lamps, but it's okay to intrude into our bedrooms and our wombs. GOD help us!!

Another item on the chopping block: The Affordable Care Act..?

Maybe someone should tell Bachmann that the Constitution does not say I have to provide FREE health care to HER paid for with my Taxes.
Why can't she pay for it with her "FREE" government farm subsidy money she collects... or the FREE money Marcus collects from Medicaid for that sham Clinic he runs.

And if we get rid of the Dept of Education all of these GOP candidates running will be telling their children that Paul Revere's job was to ' warn the Brtitish '. Good luck kids.... THAT is the Future they want for you.

Government "works best when working within the limitations of the Constitution." "I would put forth a human life amendment." So basically, I'll follow the constitution and change the parts I don't like. The government has no business educating our children but it should have every right to make a decision about whether or not you have them. Margaret Thatcher must be beside herself seeing how far conservative female candidates have moved down in stature from the days when she led England.

Answer: So that if you move from one locality to another (which people do all the time), you have a reasonable expectation of what will be taught in the public schools.

So that companies who locate anywhere in the US have a reasonable expectation of the level of education of publicly-educated workers (which the majority are).

You see, Michele, we are the UNITED States of America, not the Dog-Eat-Dog Tough Luck if You're Not Wealthy States of America.

WOW!! Really? I mean who would vote for her? Get rid of the Dept of Education and leave it to the communities and local gov't. What about a state like SC (that I live in) who was and is always at the bottom in education....you want to leave it to those folks?

It is pitiful the positions these people take. It is certain that MB doesn't care at all about the wellfare of the American people and especially the poor and middle class. Very much can be said about most of the GOP candidates. Starve the poor and feed the rich. America, if you are a middle class person or a poor person you have too much on the line to vote for these angry, intellectually challenged GOP "hopefuls" please show up and vote, vote for your lives!!OBAMA 2012 Democratic Congress!!

The reason we have it is to promote education for all Americans in the arts and sciences. And that as a nation and member of the world community we might reap the rewards of these endeavors. I am not fearful of the government, on average they have did a pretty job.

apparently education is outside the bounds of the constitution as is health care but abortion is not. I did not think that anyone could make Sarah Palin sound smart and I still don't but Ms. Bachman is certainly giving it a shot.
