Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama enjoyed a beer with Dakota Meyer on the patio outside the Oval Office Wednesday. The president will present Meyer with the Medal of Honor Thursday during a ceremony at the White House.
According to a series of tweets by White House spokesman Jay Carney, when a member of the president's staff called Meyer over the weekend to prepare, Meyer made a special request.
"On 9/8/09, Meyer, then a 21-year-old Marine corporal, repeatedly risked his own life to save the lives of 36 U.S. and Afghan troops," Carney tweeted. "Over the weekend, the president's staff called Meyer in preparation for Thursday's Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House."
"Meyer asked the staffer if he could have a beer with the President," Carney said.
"POTUS invited Dakota to come by the White House this afternoon."
Only beer?! Should've also asked for a large combination pizza with a side of hot wings! Yum!
Semper Fi warrior...good job and nice class. I'll raise one now in your honor.
Wonderful. A marvelous gesture on President Obama's part because there is no doubt that this young hero has more than earned that beer. We expect to hear more from him in the future, just as we did from some of the heroes of WWII and Viet Nam. Bravo!!!
This Marine has been awared the Highest medal in the country of all the armed services. I salute you Marine! Sempier Fidelis! May you wear it well with humility and humbleness.
Go officer! you have your choice of dream jobs now!
The one thing I always loved about the Marine corps was they didn't give awards away like candy. You earned just about every ribbon and medal. Except of course the Navy Achivement medal which they gave away like candy. Unfortunately they cheapened the award and even a Naval officer commited suicide over the fact he embleished his award with a Combat V.
Great to see a soldier who loves the President.
Yep. That's pretty dang cool!
Corporal Meyer looks pretty nervous, though. I wonder what kind of questions did he ask in this once in a lifetime moment!
I wonder if the President was thinking, 'Sweet! A chance to have a beer in the middle of the afternoon!'
OOh Rah! Semper Fi. Glad to see this President (unlike his predecessor) honoring our troops.
What a wonderful tribute to such a brave young man. Granting such a simple request from an individual who gave so much. Semper Fi...
That's what's up. he deserves it.
Thank you, Cpl. Meyer, for your service, and thank you, Mr. President, for honoring him on behalf of a grateful nation.
Did we already pay our taxes for beers for him?
First comment.... Well why can't i have a beer with Obama I have so many answers to the worlds problems Please everyone like this so I can fix the World !!!!
My god a President who cares about people not just the face and no doubt good publicity (pride) associated with the Giving of the medal of honor.... He did not say after the ceremony!
He made more time for someone else who has proved he cares about people first.
Prez, that was very kind hearted for the CinC to have a cold one with a deserving troop.
Cool, nothing wrong with having a beer, Mr.Prez. Shake the man's hand after shooting the breeze with him and you'll be on a roll. Then go tell Congress to QUIT SPENDING and START REDUCING! There ends a perfect day.
Ooh Rah, Cpl Meyer! A well deserved beer, preceeding a very well deserved medal presentation.
Dakota Meyer: I'm sure there will be plenty of obnoxious, hateful messages posted here, dissing the President for whatever, but I hope you can look beyond that and accept our congratulations on your Medal of Honor. Thanks for your service.
Well looks like it took a beer to get Obama to do the right thing for a change...wait a minute he had a beer with that professor that tried to ruin a cops career....who ya kiddin Obama...you are still a pin head.
My hat to you Corporal Meyer. If only the country had more people like you putting the common good above their own interests, the country would be a lot better off ....
