To students Perry urges faith in God

(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry used his own religious path to issue a charge to the freshman class at Liberty University, asking them to put their trust in God.

Speaking at their convocation Wednesday, the Texas governor said God has a unique plan for everyone, a lesson he learned after returning home from his service in the U.S. Air Force.

"What I learned as I wrestled with God is I didn't have to have all the answers, that they would be revealed to me in due time and that I needed to trust him," Perry said. "Do not fret if you don't know your place in the world yet or what you want to be one day, simply trust."

"Trust that God wouldn't have put you here unless he had a unique plan for your life," Perry added in an address at the conservative Virginia school founded by Pastor Jerry Falwell.

Perry, the latest candidate to enter the GOP presidential nominating contest, invoked the memory of fallen veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to ask that the students honor their memory.

"Because of what they gave I simply ask you to make the most of the freedom that they sacrificed for, that you redeem their sacrifice by living lives worthy of it," Perry said.

As members of a generation that "grew up in the shadow of 9/11," Perry told them the American response to evil is to engage and build allies around the world.

"We must do what Ronald Reagan did at the apex of the Cold War, which is to speak past the oppressors and the illegitimate rulers and directly to their people," Perry said. "The ones who live behind the wall of oppression are yearning to be free."

  1. No Amnesty for Teabaggers - Impeach Republicans

The complete message was, "In God we trust, but the rest of you have to pay cash." I do agree that the republicans have built a wall of depression, I mean oppression.

There is NOTHING wrong with what he is saying. It's just that the wrong person is saying it. You can't execute over 200 people and say you are a believer in God. Even David (one of God's favorites) had to pay the ultimate price. God is NOT a political tool you can just pull out of the box and use. Perry will learn that lesson real soon.

Do I smell theocracy in the air? If so, better take a look at how it works elsewhere ... like Iran.

Mr. Perry I'm sure God has a reason for letting Texas burn. Mr. Perry are the fires out in Texas? If not, why are you spending so much time away from your State of Texas? So Merck only contributed $5000.00 to you, that's not what is being told on the news.

"We must do what Ronald Reagan did at the apex of the Cold War, which is to speak past the oppressors and the illegitimate rulers and directly to their people,"

That's what President Obama did in his speech to the Muslim world in Cairo. He did it as freedom loving citizen of the world, not as a "championof Christ". There is a big difference. And Mr. Perry, please do not use the sacrifice of Ameican servicemen and women for your own political ambitions. It is not respectful.

What was God's plan for a 4-year old killed in the back seat of a car by a drunk driver? Was that the plan?

Yawn. Someone wake me when he starts talking about facts, evidence, historical record, expert opinions, etc., and real solutions to real problems based on the real world that they lead to. Until then, he might as well be huffing the Aqua Net he puts in his anchorman hairdo.

By invading and occupying countries and then torturing their citizens? That ought to work....

"Trust that God wouldn't have put you here unless he had a unique plan for your life,"

If god has a unique plan for me then how do I have any free choice?

"We must do what Ronald Reagan did at the apex of the Cold War, which is to speak past the oppressors and the illegitimate rulers and directly to their people,"

Wait, if god has a unique plan for all of us wouldn't his unique plan include that for the 'oppressors and illegitimate rulers'? Aren't they just fulfilling god's plan?

That's right Perry, put your faith in the almighty magic man in the sky. To hell with science, facts and things you can see, touch and feel. Just pray and hope and everything will be just fine. Hello, look around you. When was the last time you actually really talked to God and he really answered you. No, I don't mean the voices in your head. We are in deep crap if all the young people turned to putting their hopes and dreams in God's lap. There is no God. The bible is a novel. A poorly written one at that. It's like Shakespear on steroids and not as believable.

America doesn't fight Christian Crusades, Governer. America doesn't enter into any conflicts on theological grounds. America does not enter into any war on ideological grounds.

America enters into war to defend our freedom. And, I don't ever want to see a POTUS who claims to have his God revealing to him what he should do. That's craziness.

  22. Huh?

    I'm....I'm at a loss here.

Too many horrific and terrible things happen to innocent people for me to ever buy into this ridiculous notion that God has a plan for everyone....or anyone, for that matter.

So, a child is abducted, raped and brutally murdered, spending his or her final hours in a living nightmare, and that was God's plan for that child?

    Great plan, God.

Lie’s, Lies than Privatize after that you can try and survive; on your own or just die. That appeared to be the general mantra at the tea party debate. No place or rest for the weary, the tired, the poor, the ill, the elderly or the poorly educated, no palms for the holy, it’s all just business; They know a God who is okay with these great social injustices, not to mention War as a function of foreign policy! Nonsense Republican God talks!
