Michelle Obama and Olive Garden team up for healthier kids meals

Hyattsville, Md. (CNN) - First Lady Michelle Obama scored a big win Thursday in her campaign to eliminate childhood obesity within a generation. Mrs. Obama announced that the biggest full service restaurant company in the world, Darden Restaurants which owns Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse among others, has agreed to cut sodium and calories on its menus across the board as well as offering healthier menu choices targeted to kids.

"This is a breakthrough moment in the restaurant industry," Mrs. Obama told reporters and guests invited by Darden and the White House to an Olive Garden Restaurant in suburban Hyattsville, Maryland. The first lady, who called on restaurants to rethink their menus when she spoke at the National Restaurant Association more than a year ago, praised Darden for what she called its vision and commitment.

  1. As GM goes, so goes the country...Unions/Democrats killed GM, now they are killing the country

And why isn't this company just shutting down Olive Garden with all of its fatty carbs and sausage dishes? And Longhorn Steakhouse, they need to go too with all that artery clogging red meat. Boith are surely a danger to all of us. yes, these places will be the next "cigarettte" business the looney left will target to ensure we all live like they want us to live and eat what they deem acceptable.

Don't you have something better to complain about? What is exactly a " next cigarette business" anyway?

@As GM goes ... did you even read the article? They're going to be offering healtier selections. And have you ever eaten at any of these places? Longhorn is one of my favorites. They have salads, chicken, salmon, steamed veggies, baked sweet potatos. There's a lot more than just red meat. And did you know that your body needs the magnesium in red meat? Don't tell me you're one of those fruit and nuts types now, are you?

@at GM – you sounded a bit off now you are really scaring me. What does food have to do withdraw cigarettes? Nobody tells you to eat like a pig. This is a suggestion for better nutrition.
Cigarettes, on the other hand, kill this who smoke and those who have to out up with second hand smoke. Nobody around you dies if someone overeats.

Don't mind him...he owns stock in Phillip Morris. Besides, everyone knows that reasonable efforts to encourage people to make sane, informed, healthy choices about what we eat, what is available and served at the restaurants we frequent and especially what we feed our children...that's the first sign of the "apahkolipse".

This is my favorite place to eat but we know the pigs in the other party will find SOMETHING to complain about. Keep up the good work First Lady.

Doesn’t Michelle Obama look lovely? She certainly has grown into her role as America's 1st Lady and, rightfully so, she enjoys extraordinarily high approval ratings.

Any one knocking her for promoting healthy food for our school children is a slime ball and can not be trusted for anything they say.
