Washington (CNN) - They have worked in the same building for years, and in some cases decades, but members of a special congressional committee tasked with reaching a deficit reduction deal started to "begin to know each other" at a private meeting Thursday, one of the panel co-chairs said.
The 12-member committee created under last month's debt ceiling agreement has held two previous public hearings to sort out rules and hear from the head of the Congressional Budget Office.

(CNN) - Republican voters in the battleground state of Virginia chose Rick Perry as their top choice for president in a new poll, while Perry and fellow GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney ran neck and neck against President Barack Obama in hypothetical 2012 matchups.
The Quinnipiac University survey released Thursday showed the Texas governor with 25 percent support among Republican and GOP-leaning independent voters, compared with Romney's 19 percent. No other Republican candidate broke into double digits.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) – After giving President Obama's economic stimulus plan something less than an enthusiastic endorsement, House Republicans will offer their own ideas Thursday for getting the economy back on track.
House Speaker John Boehner will deliver the plan, dubbed "Liberating America's Economy" in an early afternoon speech to the Economic Club of Washington.

Washington (CNN) - Two days after Democrats suffered losses in special House seat elections, Republican campaign officials are calling the pair of defeats a reflection of President Barack Obama's failed economic record, and predicting similar losses for Democrats running on Obama's ticket in 2012.
In a memo released to Republican members of Congress and their staffs and obtained first by CNN, National Republican Congressional Committee Political Director Mike Shields says Democrats' stances on issues like the economy and Medicare cost the party the two contested seats in New York and Nevada.

CNN: Blue Dog Democrats urge the deficit panel to think big
Calls for a special congressional committee to work out a comprehensive deficit reduction deal increased Wednesday, with a group of fiscally conservative House Democrats sending the panel a letter encouraging its members to "go big."
