Poll: Romney's advantage in Virginia

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney holds the biggest lead among GOP candidates over President Obama in hypothetical 2012 match-ups in Virginia, according to a new poll.

The Roanoke College Poll of Old Dominion residents showed the former Massachusetts governor leading the president by eight percentage points, 45 percent to 37 percent, just within the margin of error. Texas Gov. Rick Perry received 42 percent support, while the president received 40 percent, also a disparity within the margin of error.

Why Congress won't stop hurting you

Washington (CNN) - Is Congress capable of doing anything right?

It's a question worth asking as Democrats and Republicans threaten for the third time this year to shut down the federal government. Americans faced the same prospect during spring budget talks and the summer debt ceiling debate. Now it's happening over what was expected to be passage of a routine bill to fund Washington through mid-November while replenishing disaster relief funds.

CNN Poll: Perry still at top but Romney stronger vs. Obama

Washington (CNN) - Despite his performances in the two most recent Republican presidential debates, a new national survey indicates that Texas Gov. Rick Perry remains on top of the field in the race for the GOP nomination.

But a CNN/ORC International Poll also indicates that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney does better than Perry in hypothetical 2012 general election matchups against President Barack Obama and matches evenly with the president on the issues and on personal characteristics.

The rocky road to the GOP nomination

Mackinac Island, Michigan (CNN) - While the events of the past weekend raised new questions about Texas Gov. Rick Perry and his campaign for the Republican nomination, several consultants and attendees at a key GOP conference here said they think the race is still moving toward a two-man showdown.

Perry has taken the lead in national polls, but his loss in Saturday's Florida Republican straw poll and criticism of his last two debate performances have given former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney a boost, several GOP consultants said.
