Biden, Axelrod condemn booing moment at GOP debate

(CNN) - A moment in last week's GOP presidential debate – in which some members of the audience could be heard openly booing a gay solider – was harshly criticized by prominent Democrats Tuesday.

Vice Pres. Joe Biden, speaking on ABC's "The View," said the audience response was "reprehensible."

"I did have a visceral response," Biden said of the moment he heard the booing. "I'm not sure it's because my son spent a year in Iraq, and I know my son and all kids with him. I don't think they give a damn whether the guy firing the rifle to protect them is gay or straight. I don't think they care about. Now, look, this kid risked his life, this kid was there for a year – and I quite frankly, I thought it was reprehensible."

Meanwhile, at a campaign event in New Hampshire, senior Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod slammed the Republican candidates for not condemning the booing as it happened.

"Not one person on that platform, not one candidate, was willing to say 'Don't do that,' was willing to say 'It's inappropriate to boo someone who is risking his life for our country'," Axelrod said.

After the debate, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said he hadn't heard the booing when the question was asked. Santorum was being asked the question when the incident occurred.

"I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier," Santorum said on Fox News the day after the debate. "Certainly had I heard them, I would have said, 'Don't do that. This man is serving our country and we are to thank him for his service'."

  1. GOP Failed America

Booing an American gay solider should be harshly criticized. That brave gay soldier is doing something Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and other Tea Baggers/GOP candidates has never done – put his life on the line to defend our freedoms and our way of life. Also, many believe Gay people are second class citizens since we do not enjoy the same benefits as our straight countrymen like marriage and federal benefits for married people, social security survivor benefits, etc. This soldier should be praised, not condemned and those who booed him should be ashamed of themselves. They are not true Americans.

"I wonder if they condemn Obama deamonizing his opponents as terrorists, the enemy, unpatriotic?"

He's never done that. Cite examples or crawl back under your bridge.

Sniffitt I take my hat off to you for your indefatigable attempts to educate those that refuse to be educated, and enlighten those who only thrive of their hearts.
The Obama blah blah zzzzzzzz blah blahs on this site are running scared. They have been for quite sometime. Look at the jokes they have lined up seeking the Presidency of this country. The laughter they provoke whenever they 'debate' each other resounds throughout the world.
Listen to the solutions they and their brethren hear that? Nothing. Me either.
I find it best and most soothing to ignore them and let them wallow in their own self-created world devoid of facts, or solutions.
What they hate most is to be IGNORED.

    Correction: My comment should read:

  6. GOP Failed America

"the party of destruction and division is on the march again. Can't run on or talk about their failed economic policies......".

Yep, lets talk about the failed policies of the GOP/Tea Baggers. The Radical Right-Wing social extremists (to quote Newt Gingrinch) have hijacked the party and burned bridges beyond repair. It is a real shame the GOP has become totally sold-out to the Big $ lobbyists and appeasing the radical nutjobs. Remember that the GOP's solution to every-thing is as follows:

    1. Cut taxes
    2. Increase the Military and invade countries with rich resources
    3. Cut all gov't programs
    4. Wait for the "rich" to create COMPANIES to take care of all of us
    5. If all else fails, PRAY TO "JESUS"

Cheering for someone to die when Ron Paul spoke was even worse. But admit it...the question about an active-duty Gay soldier serving in war zone was a set-up question...intentionally selected to stir-up trouble or controversy. Who cares if the guy is Gay or not is nobody's dang business.

Yes, because as well all know liberals are incapable of booing people they don't like. I mean it's not like ultra-liberals can be just an bigoted and prejudiced and ultra-conservatives. What's that ...? They can!?! Well I, for one, and shocked beyond words ...

These people might want to look hypocrisy up in a dictionary ...

The caustic behavior is not limited to voters. Elected officials, who happen to be Tea Party members, exhibit the same disgusting behavior. Let's not forget Joe Wilson who shouted out, "You lie," several times before being caught "out there" as the only voice. Play back the tapes. He shouts it out at least 3 times in the 20-30 seconds leading up to "the moment."

There was 2-3 people out of 5,000 that booed the gay policy not the soldier. The dumbocrap hero Clinton was the one that put the policy in effect. That is/was the smart thing to do. Just see what happens when "don't ask, don't tell" is implemented.

I think the booing an American soldier, cheering Perry that he had executed over 200 men while not sure 100% sure of their innocence (Todd Wittingham), or clapping that a fellow American without health insurance should die shows exactly what type of people that make up the GOP/Tea Baggers. They want to hide behind their narrow minded view of morality and so called fiscal responsibility "as long as a Democrat is in the Presidency, but its fine to waste 6.4 trillon when the President is a GOP/Repub."

I am looking at it this way from now on, dont preach to me, dont lecturer to me and dont ask me to love you and if you stick your finger or hand in my face like this administration does, I will not only slap the taste out of your mouth your teeth will go too, I am an AMERICAN and a PATRIOT, i'm not your subject, so stick it in my face and see what happens.

According to the Republican Tea Party Code of Conduct, booing a member of the U.S. Armed Forced is OK as long as one is wearing a little American Flag Lapel pin that is made in China.

To Axelrod: if you aren't sure Obama can win, then resign and let someone run the campaign that does. Otherwise you just worry about running the campaign and let the voters worry about his re-election victory. If you think the people are going to return the control of this country to the Cons, after we know their Koch driven, rich first agenda, then you really don't have your finger on the pulse of the people. Republican Cons (as in convicts, con artists, etc) talk about rolling back 'Obamacare' if elected, but that's just talk; the first thing that they would do is repeal ANY legislation related to the regulation of Wall St., banks, credit card companies, or insurance. That is the real goal of the Koches and their ilk, so they can promptly re-tank the economy, there-by reducing the income of the middle class and increasing their own.

Joe- they weren't booing. That was one of two things- them snoring or the air whistling through the spot where their brain belongs.
Gay soldiers are more logical than gay Republicans but they exist and you don't hear them saying stay away from us in the voting booth.

really amazing the level of ignorance on display here; obviously none of you saw the event. There were no boos when the solider stated he was gay, none, zero. The few boos that were heard came AFTER he asked if the candidates would support/continue the repeal of DADT.
