Palin threatens lawsuit over book

(CNN) - One week after the release of a controversial book on Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor threatened to sue the book's author for including what her lawyer called a "series of lies and rumors presented as fact."

The book, "The Rogue," by Joe McGinniss, has received widespread attention since McGinniss moved in next door to Palin to begin writing in 2010.

Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House and publisher of the book, stood by the title and McGinniss.

"We are confident that the reporting in THE ROGUE is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated," said spokesman Stuart Applebaum in an email on Wednesday.

Shortly before the book hit shelves last week, Palin's husband, Todd, lashed out at McGinniss, saying the author had been "relentlessly" stalking his family and filled the book with "lies, innuendo and smears."

In a letter sent to the book's publisher, Crown Publishing Group, Palin's lawyer said Monday both McGinniss and Crown knowingly published false information and "defamed the Palins."

McGinniss has staunchly defended the title.

"Believe me, I'm so sick of Sarah Palin right now, that after this couple (of) weeks is over, I hope to never hear her name again," McGinniss said last week on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

McGinniss said that he had originally set out to write a book about Alaska, when Palin was picked as the 2008 vice presidential running mate for Sen. John McCain

"That made her synonymous with Alaska," McGinniss said. "My book about Alaska became a book about Sarah Palin."

The book has received criticism from a number of news outlets, including The New York Times, which said the book "chases caustic, unsubstantiated gossip."

It has also been hit with harsh reviews over its use of anonymous sources for stories about Palin’s past.

But McGinniss stands by the book's accuracy.

"Sarah Palin has lived an outrageous life," McGinniss said on CNN's "American Morning" last week. "All I did was talk to people about it, and they documented it for me. When I was comfortable with the veracity of what I heard, I put it into the book. There were a lot of things that I wasn't comfortable with, that I didn't put them in."

The book is clear that it is using anonymous sources. Wasillia is a small town and the Palins are known for being vindictive, so I can understand why it would be important to protect these sources. McGinness is credible enough that he can get away with that. His book "The Selling of the President" is still a landmark work.

My suggestion is if you don't approve of using unnamed sources, don;t buy the book.

As far as a lawsuit goes ... good luck with that. It would just create more sales of the book.

Earth to Sarah & Todd: "You've made millions off Sarah's slim resume of public service, her hot looks, and your so-called "family values". What about this book surprises you?"

He, himself, chose Mrs. Palin as his subject. If he's "sick" of that subject, it is by his own doing and he can blame nobody but himself. Furthermore, my guess is that he will be delighted to be reminded of Mrs. Palin with every royalty check he cashes.

"Lies and rumors presented as facts." Isn't that a perfectly accurate description of Palin's MO?

How ironic that this woman who lies to Americans on a regular basis is offended by a book about her?
Maybe I should hire a lawyer and sue Sarah Palin regarding lying in town hall meetings telling folks that the Healthcare Reform Act had 'death panels' in it!
Sarah Palin – you are a disgusting excuse for a human being!

i hope their legal team drains them for all they have, so they can feel what everyone they have taken advantage of and stepped on feels. good luck with that, Palins!

now if the Obama administration would sue over all of the lies she presents as facts on a daily basis...

Well of course! As others have stated, anything for money. Bilk the clueless for money and enjoy the good life while all those suckers eat up their rhetoric you spew. I wish you'd pack your gear up and head back to the tundras of Alaska. But you've got a taste of the good life in the lower 48, so that won't be happening!

She won't sue but she will use that as an excuse for not running for president to get sympathy and $$$$$ from the likes of @keepingitreal or@springs, among others, who still think this woman is worthy of anything, wasn't money one of her excuses for stepping down from her half term as governor of the least populated state
She has been spewing forth lies and hate since 2008. The devil finally caught up with her and he wants her soul if she had one of course. Never mind a brain!

Sue Sarah, sue! Then those sources and stories will be thoroughly exposed and investigated. Who knows, maybe only 20, 50, or 80% will be proven true. Let's all find out which are true and which are not. Should be fun.

Sarah Palin has lived a COURAGEOUS, adventurous, and giving American life. The author, on the other hand, has lived his like a mole in the mud, spying on other people in order to turn a dime.

In my opinion you should be able to write whatever you want. No one else can control your opinions and ideas and if other people want to buy them they can whether it is totally true or not.

This woman and her entire family klan are nothing but glorified white trash. They gladly expose their laundry on a reality show to reap the money paid to them and now suddenly some book is telling lies. The fact that she wants to sue tells me all I need to know about her character. What a bunch of low-life degenerates.

Sorry, Sarah. You wanted to be a super star and make lots of money. Superstars can't sue because of being a public figures. Otherwise, Obama probably could have planted a lawsuit on you many times. But, you are back in the news!!!!

Rule #1: You don't threaten to sue when you're 100% certain your side can be defended. You go ahead and sue and force the other party to pay to defend. That gets settlement talks going.

Palin's actions indicate the book is likely on target. She'd be better off using her millions to buy up every copy. Does she understand the promotional value of her threat?

  23. Clinton Birther?

Will someone please do some research (including looking up the CNN story) about who started the Birther movement – Hillary Clinton's campain when she was running against Obama. PLEASE do some reasearch... you just sound so uneducated when you simply blame the other guy/gal/party. Just like "tax the rich" – please define this "slogan" – this is a great political move lets promise something (no or lower taxes) to a huge majority of the voters and see if we can get elected. You want people to pay their fair share – okay why don't we all pay the same percentage? Get rid of all the loopholes (for every one rich or poor) and every one pays the exact same percentage on any and all income. This would mean Mr. Buffet would have to pay his fair share rather than paying himself in shares and dividends rather than income like his help.
