Palin threatens lawsuit over book

(CNN) - One week after the release of a controversial book on Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor threatened to sue the book's author for including what her lawyer called a "series of lies and rumors presented as fact."

The book, "The Rogue," by Joe McGinniss, has received widespread attention since McGinniss moved in next door to Palin to begin writing in 2010.

Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House and publisher of the book, stood by the title and McGinniss.

"We are confident that the reporting in THE ROGUE is solid, reliable, and well-substantiated," said spokesman Stuart Applebaum in an email on Wednesday.

Shortly before the book hit shelves last week, Palin's husband, Todd, lashed out at McGinniss, saying the author had been "relentlessly" stalking his family and filled the book with "lies, innuendo and smears."

In a letter sent to the book's publisher, Crown Publishing Group, Palin's lawyer said Monday both McGinniss and Crown knowingly published false information and "defamed the Palins."

McGinniss has staunchly defended the title.

"Believe me, I'm so sick of Sarah Palin right now, that after this couple (of) weeks is over, I hope to never hear her name again," McGinniss said last week on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight."

McGinniss said that he had originally set out to write a book about Alaska, when Palin was picked as the 2008 vice presidential running mate for Sen. John McCain

"That made her synonymous with Alaska," McGinniss said. "My book about Alaska became a book about Sarah Palin."

The book has received criticism from a number of news outlets, including The New York Times, which said the book "chases caustic, unsubstantiated gossip."

It has also been hit with harsh reviews over its use of anonymous sources for stories about Palin’s past.

But McGinniss stands by the book's accuracy.

"Sarah Palin has lived an outrageous life," McGinniss said on CNN's "American Morning" last week. "All I did was talk to people about it, and they documented it for me. When I was comfortable with the veracity of what I heard, I put it into the book. There were a lot of things that I wasn't comfortable with, that I didn't put them in."

She won't sue. Besides being a public figure and not having a legal leg to stand on she does not want to go on the stand and testify, or, have people testify against her. All she is doing is boosting book sales for McGinnis.

I am willing to bet that she uses this book as her reason for not running for President. This gave her (in her and the Palinbots minds) an 'out' from running for President. Her reason to 'quit', like it was when she quit as Governor.

So if people are sued for lying in their books, how come Palin hasn't been sued for saying she's a leader? Leaders NEVER quit!

When one is serious one does not "threaten". One sues! More shrill (and is she ever shrill) threats and denials to keep their names in the spotlight. BTW, does Todd actually DO anything other than stand around holding his wife's purse? Does he manage a business on a daily basis or is he just "Mr. Sarah Palin"? I'm not being facetious. I really don't know the answer and I'm curious.

I am going to read this book. I probably wouldn't if the Palins hadn't made such a big deal about it.

Good, then the truth will come out. She will NOT file any kind of law suit against anyone because the burdon of proof will be hers. She is a mutt pure and simple.

Wah..>Wah..>Wah....She can imply that the President is not a citizen, call him unamerican, pick on his wife as not patriotic-but she's gonna sue? Man-don't you just wish she was President?

A pathetic excuse for a substantive, serious, intelligent person. Bo back home for good Sarah-shoot ya' a moose or somethin'....You Bethca!

How she has survived in politics this long with such thin skin is a mystery.

Does she really want all those people to reiterate everything that is in the book? Not unless she is proud of the behavior depicted in the book. Lose the case and it all becomes sworn testimony.

Where was her outrage when the book, "The Secret Life of Bill Clinton" came out? Gosh, afterall, he murdered countless folk. What a bunch of rubbish she spews. I really want to see her jump into the race, to watch her implode.....

Hmmm, wonder who I can sue for her book (and comments) which have been known to be a "series of lies and rumors presented as fact."

A lot of comments from people who say they don't care. American politics, the best show on TV.

Wouldn't she have to prove that what the author is saying is, in fact, false?

The woman who started the "Death Panel" lie – one of the most evil lies ever told – has the nerve to complain that someone else is not telling the truth. The woman has no shame.

Just the fact that she acknowledges their is a bad book about her will help sell more than a million copies or more.America already knows what type woman, wife and mother she is. McGuinness is probably rolling over with laughter and [NEW MONEY] coming in,that he won't have to write another Palin book until she screws up again. That may be just a couple of days away.

I would like to see Palin sue the author. It'd be a great way for her to spend the millions she's fleeced off her "followers!"

Not a fan of Sarah P, but when the author has been criticized by the New York Times for producing 'unsubstantiated' stories... I hold judgement.
    .
There is probably enough gossip around SP to fill several books, but if this author is proven to have fabricated even one of them, the book in its entirety is worthless(not that a book of SP wasn't already).
    .
If you can't stand her, why write a book? He either welcomes the controversy, or welcomes the paycheck. Neither are particularly noble reasons.

Lies and misinformation is the Palin way. Remember Death Panels, Thanks but no thanks to the bridge to nowhere, stated that polar bears were not endangered, does not pass judgement on gays, climate change, that Alaska produces 20% of the US energy supply and on and on. And now she is complaining about lies. LOL

If the things in the book are true, they won't sue.

Of course she is suing. The lawsuit was probably the first thing that came to mind when she heard he was even writing a book about her, this is how a perpetual victims mind works.

This woman is so dumb people around her can't even explain the libel and slander laws of this country to her. Please, Sarah, sue so that there will be a discovery phase where even more stuff will come out. Then she'll have to take the stand and under oath swear to some of the lies she's been spreading. Forget the MJ doctor's trial and Amanda Knox: this is the trial I will be watching on TV!
