Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."
Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.
"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.
He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."
Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.
"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."
Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Mr. Obama is a one generation AFRICAN American. Mr. Cain is a multigeneration Black American.
Let's leave the Africans in Africa
Instead of blaming blacks for being closed minded why doesn't Cain and the Republicans do something to reach out to the black community and show they care about something else besides the 1% of wealthy Americans, then maybe he would sway blacks to vote Republican.
I think its easy to figure out who is brainwashed if tom cain think that a black will get nominated for the presidentcy as a republican. He should call J.C. Watts in Okla. and find out from him about a black having power in the replublican/tea party. The last time i saw J.C. it was 3Am doing a informercial.
JOHN: Herman Cain is not the guy that said "the rent is too damn high." The other guy was older, different clown! LOL
Mr Cain is rich. Thats why he is a Republican, the party that represents rich people. His fellow African Americans are for the most part poor, certainly in disproportianate numbers to whites. That's why they vote Democrat. Nothing to do with brainwashing or "values". Just that simple.
Just the opposite, the Whites (even poor ones) are brainwashed into voting for the Republicans that are cutting their Middle class throats and they are too stupid to know it. They think of it as a status symbol as if it is elite to vote Republican.. What knuckle dragging people will do to fit in.
To the dummy that said blacks never vote for a white person....what do you think they have been doing since they got the right to vote?? All the people have been white, just about, so who do you think black people have been voting for: Martians? Good grief!
How you can tell when a targeted group has been brainwashed: 1) when the vast majority of the group in question cling for dear life to an idea/ideology that has demonstrably harmed them (black Americans and liberalism), and 2) when members of that group demonize and verbally abuse those who point out the harm done to them by that idea/ideology and offer them a way out that is proven successful in the past.
About generalizations: black American voters voted 96-98% for Barack Obama, so some generalizations are warranted. That's why I don't get mad when some presume that I voted for a man who so plainly broadcasted his intentions to impoverish and socialize from the beginning. I merely correct the error politely.
Blacks brainwashed?.....Mr. Cain, you have just lost the black vote.
What I find interesting is that people like Cain want to speak for all blacks with a broadbrush. Also, I've never heard anyone point out that white conservatives are brainwashed into voting for republicans and we know that is true.
That's really rich coming from Uncle Tom Cain. He seems to forget the the Democrats of the 1800's were Conservatives who owned Black slaves, and the Republicans were liberals who were against slavery.
As a black woman I am disgusted with the Democratic Party as well as the liberal media. They take advantage of the poor and uneducated and make them dependent on the government. Cain has a different view for our community which is not victimization but personal responsibility. Most on this post are a good representation of those who are brainwashed to the point of not being able of grasping alternative views. It's sad and it reflects how anyone with dissenting views to what the Dems expect their black consituents to say and do will be targeted.
"Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field."
This is the most sane and reasonable comment that I have heard coming from a Republican presidential candidate.
The Republicans just keep rolling out one loon after another into the news. From now on, I will refer to this dope as "Uncle Ruckus"
"African-Americans brainwashed" - many of the people in my family are Republicans from the 50's-60's and believe today's Republican Party still represents them. You absolutely cannot communicate the fact that those Republicans are long gone and would never be accepted within today's Republican Party. The Republican's are very slick in getting people to believe they are the party that is for the "people" when they ARE NOT. Do not even try to say people are brainwashed if they are Democrats. The left is far more open and tolerant than the right!!!!
What will it be... thin crust or deep. The thin would have an extra layer of GOP to soak up the sauce they spread. Simply put GOP= for the Party.
wise up Cain, you stupid @ss. Christian, white, evangelical AMERICA, is NOT going to choose between two black men. One already has a job.......sorry, you're FAZED OUT.
Before you start trashing Herman Cain, do some research. He has turned business that were on the brink of collaspe into thriving ones. He has a plan for getting America back on track, the "9 9 9" plan. He's a fighter and we so desperately need that in a leader...Go Herman!
"not being open minded and considering a conservative point of view".......If you are open minded, why would you be a narrow minded "conservative"?
Two words that I describe Cain: Uncle Tom.
I am not sure if many who are posting realize this but the reason many of us in the black community are leaving Obama is because many of us only voted for him because we were excited to see someone of color reach the top. I think it is safe to say that we won't make that mistake again. I loathe those who are intimidated by blacks who are educated or at least hard working and refuse to be a slave to the Democratic Party. The revolution that is taking place in America in 2012 will be how many of us began supporting people like Cain for President!
It's because you never have and never will make as much money as us conservative white people. We're only letting Cain run in the primary to show we need you, hopefully, when he gets pushed down, you'll still join us in defeating the other black! Obvious troll is obvious?
1000% correct... they are taught to have a victim's mentality, instead of empowering. It's kind of like being a battered woman.
You voted for obama in 2008 to prove you were not racist. Vote Cain in 2012 to prove you're not stupid!!!
Of course he's not brainwashed, he's above his people. The Republican Party has been blatantly racist in the modern era, taking advantage of the backlash against the Civil Rights Act (which is why Cain can even think of running), Reagan's campaigning against 'welfare queens and young bucks you buy T-bone steaks with food stamps', on and on. He's a Republican because he made a lot of money off lousy and unhealty pizza sold to the poorer members of the public. The rumor, by the way, that he and Clarence Thomas are lovers is just gossip.
