Cain: Black community 'brainwashed' into voting for Dems

Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.

"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."

Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.

"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.

He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."

Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.

"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."

Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Watch The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer weekdays at 4pm to 6pm ET and Saturdays at 6pm ET. For the latest from The Situation Room click here.

And I thought it was because Cain is a bigot who showed that he is yellow, not black, when it was his turn to fight for the US.

The more I hear from Cain, the more I like. He's a straight shooter. I know all about the brainwashing because I grew up in the liberal school system - there was one and only one way to think, walk, act and breathe. If you had questions about the liberal viewpoints, better keep them to yourself. The Internet changed that - people can now investigate for themselves. Anyway, Cain, please express in your clear-headed way the heart of the conservative message - the one that liberals don't want anyone to know about, all they know is ad hominem attacks and smears. Amen. So glad I'll get to cast a vote for you!

Yeah, I'm sure Blacks would really change their mind and go with a political party that has done every thing it can to destroy a Black President, barely polices it's bloggers and websites for racial slurs, considers Black second class citizens and and has just recently allowed a politician who called Blacks "aborigines" to stay in office. I'm sure they very brain washed.

It's not really brainwashing... it's Stockholm Syndrome. Perhaps a legacy of plantation dependency.

I am an Afr-Amer and voted for both Bushs. I will vote for Obama 2012. I care about America. I did not spend 30 years in the military to watch the GOP not invest in this great country and only support the rich. Please wake up we have to educate, care for and build for the future. Not stop and take away !

And they created this state that we are in......lets not forget that. 3 years to turn a country around is not just enough time. And got this....the President cant just turn on a switch and create jobs. The weathly have not created jobs with 12 years of tax breaks....think about it..

    Thank you..... Go USA !!

Anyone who doesn't like Mr. Cain is a racist plain and simple. If you diagree with him you should be boy-cotted and shuned for life. If you are black and don't like Mr Cain then your a jealous loser and too stupid to even vote !

    "David

I also love that people say, "Blacks are for democrats because democrats take care of them." That is just ignorant. You're generalizing an entire race of people. Republicans don't want the wealthy to be taxed higher because they already makeup 50% of tax revenue that the U.S. gets every year. Pay their fair share? They already are. I'm not rich either, it's just obvious logic. Why should the wealthy pay for systems that should not exist such as welfare? It's a crutch."

OK, then why do blacks vote democrat? What is the lure?

If me not voting for any GOP including Cain is being brainwashed... I will buy a Brainwashed Hat and Penny T Shirt... to wear to the Polls...... LMAO.... did he think that insulting the black community would make us say

O No, Cain said we are brainwashed if we don't vote for him lets go vote for him so he won't think that.... Um NO...
Matter of fact isn't his crew that said that blacks voted for Obama because he was black?? Well if that's the case what makes him so sure we won't vote for him because he is black??? I am sure he wouldn't want us to do something like that....

The comments on this thread are naive and myopic. The same old drumbeat of "Republicans are white and greedy and white." The Democrat Party has never done a thing for Blacks. Under Obama, African American unemployment has hit record levels, as has food stamp enrollment. You talk about Democrats visiting Black communities and asking for their votes. They get the votes, and they are not seen again until the next election. Liberal policies are what got this country into this mess. Herman Cain is a true American success story, and he didnt "screw anyone over" to get there. His message is sincere and heartfelt and he has a record of turning around problem companies.

    Herman Cain is absolutely correct.
The democrats had better pray that blacks never figure out how they've been exploited for their votes.
It's the dems who have never done a thing for minorities, not the Republicans.

"Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage."

Kevin, you should make sure you don't misquote. Cain said the following, "Because **many** African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view." By not using the full sentence you complete change what Cain said is being perceived. MANY does not equal all. It seems like *many* people are upset with what Cain said because they feel he was saying, " *All* African-Americans have been brainwashed," which is just not the case.

  16. Logic @ Reason

Fact: Democrats filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964 led by Sam Ervin (D-NC), Robert Byrd (D-WV) and none other than Al Gore Sr. (D-TN). 80% of Republicans supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act to only 63% of Democrats. Sorry to confuse the liberals with facts but Herman Cain is the smartest man in the room. Blacks have been brainwashed by liberals in this country. If blacks aren't kept dumb, down and dependent, the Democrats would never win another election again.

"rrr maybe they realize that the GOP is the party of the Rich, White man? Rich, White men who don't particularly care for them? Brainwashed? No, they just know what's up!"

Its called intellect, inventing stuff, creating stuff.. not leaching off of society. Tell you what, all us rich white men will pack it up, move to another country, see how well the black communiyt does. oh, that means pulling all the nba, nfl, mlb, nhl teams. Seeing as these rich white people pay 80% of the taxes, good luck with the social programs that wont get funded because there is no money !

The more I listen to this guy, the more I like him!

Republicans have always needed to address the lack of penetration in urban areas. Mr. Cain's comments about the demographics are spot on. But, I still believe republicans, even Mr. Cain should engage urban voters much more aggressively.

The 9-9-9 plan is the best plan offered so far. Get rid of most of the IRS now! The tax code benefits the rich because they can take advantage of the complicated deductions. A simple tax code would eliminate a great number of tax related law suits.

    Great plan Mr. Cain !

Brainwashed? This speaks volumes about the black community's blind belief in the Democratic party. History shows it's the Democrats that do the most harm and damage to blacks yet they continue to swallow the class warfare rethoric every day. I guess you really can't fix stupid.

Yeah, the black community is doing so well under the Obama administration. So is every other demographic. We are so much better off under this Marxist president. Marxist ideas are really helping this country. What would we do without the 20%+ of the population who is not working. It's just so much better!

  25. Pathetic

No bias here CNN: "The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination." How many African-Americans are running for the Democratic nomination (or any in the last presidential election)? You even put an Obama ad right next to the article.

As for the comments, explain to me exactly have Democrats have helped African-Americans. They talk about it plenty, but where are the results? Conservatives believe everyone deserves the chance to succeed on their own merits and not just certain groups the government deems special.
