Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."
Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.
"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.
He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."
Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.
"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."
Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Perhaps they voted for Obama because the majority of black americans are registered democrats? Or is it that the republicans have a relativly recent history of campaigning against equal rights?
Cain is right as rain,The trouble with most black americans is they don't know their own history,For example,The democratics used welfare to destroy the black family unit,When housing aid was offered, under the welfare rules at the time there was a stipulation that the man of the house could not be present..Another example is the fact that it was the republicans that helped LBJ get the civil rights bill passed over the objections of racist southern democrats, and that MLK was a card carrying republican.I believe that if more blacks would educate themselves about their past they would see who really has been using.
I align myself with the old school Republican line of thought, but what has happened to the Republican party? It use to be that the Republican party was about less taxes for everyone and less federal government. I admit that the current candidates and the politicians representing the Republican party are sad, but I do still believe that it is better to have people make decisions on how they spend their own money rather than having the government tax us and take that choice away from us. In addition, I still believe that state and local government have a better ability on making decisions for their local population than the federal government. With that being said, I am ashamed of the people who have been representing the Republican party over the last decade or so.
LOL. What is more likely, millions of blacks who have been brainwashed or one black dude who had sipped from the tea-flavored Kool-Aid?
Orville Faubus received 80% of the Black vote in Arkansas and he was a Democrat. Mr. Cain is wrong about the brainwashing content–more mind bending behaviour than brainwashing. Voting that way is another way to say kick me, please.
The fact that so many blacks(on this very comment board) and white libs think the repubs fought against the civil rights movement, when in FACT, it was the dems in congress that tried to stop it proves his point.Come on guys, Sharpton and Jesse are wrong. Please educate yourselves and you won't feel so much hate towards the people who would fight for you rights.
Also, even with my previously mentioned beliefs, I feel that we need to stick to a balanced budget and we should have a flat tax rate for anyone above the poverty line with no tax shelters or deductions.
All you libs out there: Is it not apparent to you at this point that Both parties are for the big corporations, fat cats on Wall Street and further enriching themselves? If not then you Are brainwashed and you have bought the class envy cliche "the Repulicans are the party of the rich..."
Look around you! The dems AND the repubs are becoming rich elites (a huge percentage of of O's admin is former WS bankers). These people also donated heavily to his campaign. Look it up. So stop with the juvenile, unenlightened parroting. Look at what the Democrat party has done to the black family, black education, and major black urban areas such as Oakland, Cleveland, Philly, Detroit, Newark, New Orleans. These heavily welfare dependent cities have been controlled / run by Democrats for 40- 60 years and they are imploding. Look it up. The tax paying base is leaving and there is little hope they will ever return. You can run down the Republicans all you want with cliche one liners, but the stark fact is the elites win by pitting us against each other. Stop name calling and get involved and become part of a solution. Inform yourselves.
It appears that the vast majority of those responding with their comments are still stuck on the reservation....Still unable to look at our country going down the crapper and think that maybe after three years it's finally somebodies fault other than Bush.
And the some are calling Cain a sellout only validates Cain's statement about the brainwashing. It's amazing that there are those who will call a black man, like Cain, an uncle tom...and then in the same breath call Tea Party people racists. But libs never bother themselves with facts. Despite all their contradictions like blaming republicans about being beholden to corporations where greedy people never pay their "fair share," while at the same time Obama jobs czar, CEO Jeffrey Immult of GE, posts 5 billion in net profits and pays zero in taxes....oh yah, let's not forget him sending the X-Ray division of GE to China. But I guess that's Bush's fault too, so I won't be holding my breath that any of the cool aid drinkers will be coming off the plantation anytime soon...
History lesson Herman Civil rights act was pushed thru congress by ---. The voting rights act was pushed thru congress by.....?Harry Truman signed into law equal access to the Military was a.....?the 1972 fair employment act......? dr. King was a ......?answer DEMOCRATS. Brain wash that!!!
"Proof positive that Mr. Cain is out of touch with the black community. Most polls that indicate the most black Americans have very conservative social and economic views. The problem is that the politicians espousing those views are mostly viewed as racists. Mr. Cain, do I need to cite you the several examples of conservative racism on display by prominent conservatives in just this year alone?"
Yes you do. And while your at it don't overlook the blatant racism being espoused from the Congressional Black Caucus. Also, all of you posters alluding to the racist tea parties...please provide us with examples of such racism.
I read most of these comments. 1 comment accused republicans of being against the civil rights amendment when it was actually democrats that fought against it. That is how democrats get votes by misinforming trusting voters. Repeating lies over and over until people actually believe them. Another comment mentioned how Democrats are for the public and republicans are for business. If you actually think and not just react: being for business is being for the public. Where do you think all the jobs come from that pay for all the give away's the democrats like to steal from your paycheck? Did you know that there is 1 social security recipient for every 1.75 working people? And many of them aren't of retirement age, but sucking off the government fund that was meant only for retirement and it's liberals that raided that fund and put our government in the mess that it is in.
Go Mr Cain!! Good for you for speaking the truth. A lot of my black brothers don't want to leave the Democrat plantation but I do, so please lead the way!
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded," When I think of republicans the last thing I think of is open mindedness. When I think of republicans I think, "hateful, intolerant, close-minded, imbeciles."
They all vote the same because it just ain't safe to stand out in that community. No siree dawg it ain't.
You're either hip or you're hopped, ostracized, and discombobulated.
Cain is absolutely spot on. As a conservative black man, I too am treated like an invisible man because I don't subscribe to the Dem plantation mantra that the world is dead set on depriving a black man of life and liberty. Additionally I advocate INDEPENDENT thinking and don't shill for ANY political party. However IF I ran, it would be as a Tea Party Conservative because of its IDEAS. Complexion-connection notwithstanding, I proudly count myself among the 5% of blacks who did NOT vote for Barack in 2008. I BET that number will increase 6 times over in 2012. I'm objective. Barack is an abject failure.
Wow, I see by a lot of the comments here that Mr. Cain was right on the money. !0 the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was filibustered by the Democrats. A greater majority of Republicans voted for the act than democrats. R: 80%+, D. 60%.
Regarding the old false statment about rich white guys. Just look at who are the majority of rich white guys in Congress. The top 10? 2 Republicans, 8 Democrats. If the black community has been served so well by B.O and his party, why is black unemployment approaching 17%. For whites it's down to 8%. What have the Democrats provided for the minority community? Welfare (here's money so you don't have to better yourself), victim hood (you're just not good enough to make it by yourself, here's some gov affirmative action, its not really needed anymore but we want to continue to purpetuate the myth of victimhood) and racism. What party focuses on race or class? Think for yourself, quit being a drone.
What happened to the Democrat party of "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country?" That was the party my family belonged to. But no longer. Not for a long time. We did not change, the party did. We were immigrants and resented that they wanted to keep us down. Trying to make us reliant on the government and demonizing any success. My mother left the union and went into management with only a 6th grade education. Switching parties only made sense for a while, then the Republican party developed the mantra of spend, spend, spend. The product of our 2 bigger parties became the same, more spending and deeper debt. Their words and favorite groups are different, but the outcome is the same. We need to stand up and show ALL our elected officials that we are the ones in charge, we are the bosses, they all work for us and are in their position at our choice. If the congress were term limited as the president is, maybe they would think beyond the next election. If not, they are out anyway. Don't let them divide us any longer. The spin they spew is insulting to our intelligence. We must learn the truth for ourselves. Don't just focus on a specific media source that leans one way or the other. Listen to both and compare. Some where in the middle is the truth.
Watch how nuts the Democrats go when they see this – they are petrified that black people would vote for anyone other than Democrats. Look at the inner cities – 50 years of Democrat policies and things are worse than ever – a record to be proud of.
Democrats have done plenty of thing TO African Americans but in the process have destroyed their community. As for what Republicans offer black Americans, how about standing on their own two feet without government money that resulted in the destruction of the black family. You people on the left have killed the balck community with yoru family destroying policies – and as for Republicans being the party of the rich – it is a LIE – look at the billionaires – Soros, Gates, Buffet – all Democrats, Goldman Sachs – Democrats, General Electric – ALL Democrats – like most billionaires – all Democrats, the party of the ultra rich – look Hollywood, Are you people blind?
Like Goebbels you think if you say it enough people will believe it – but Americans are on to Democrat LIES
The sad thing is that Americans are too busy hating the other party and don't realize both parties brainwash their voters.
I guess what Herman is trying to say is that "blacks" are all stupid??!!!! I wonder how many votes that'll get him???
Correction it was southern DEMOCRATS who voted against civil rights....look it up I promise. Also he nailed it on the head. The black community has been brainwashed bythe media. Tea party republicans only want to return this great nation to what made it great...personal and fisical responsibility. Simply put, if you dont have the money you cant spend it....something our goverenment has forgotten in recent decades.
Cain struck a nreve – the Democrats are very nervous about this since African Americans know that they have been played by Democrats, for 150 years
When are all of you liberals going to forget about the race baiting that your party is spewing? Look at the newest Gallup poll, Herman Cain is the most liked out of all of the GOP candidates, but he is also the least known. Which is why his poll numbers have been so low. If your liberal mainstream media would show a little more of Herman Cain he would be polling much higher. There are many in the tea party movement and republicans in general that love Herman Cain and would love to see him get the nomination. My opion, the reason the mainstream media won't talk about him much is that they are afraid of him. They are afraid of the Cain train running right over Obama in the general election. Latest Rasmussen poll shows Cain trailing Obama by only 5 points. 5 POINTS! And that's with only 50% of the country knowing who he is. I would bet money that if 100% of the country knew who he was, like is the case with Obama, he would be leading by at least 20 points. I am a white tea party member and Herman Cain has my full support and confidence. The racism is just a political tool of the democrats. Every political party and every walk of life has people that are racist, but that doesn't mean the entire group they are a part of is that way.
to "Truth" = So, the Whole Election is based on race" because you heard about one 80 year old black woman (who lived through the pre Civil Rights years and may have even lost loved ones in the battle, at the end of her life was FINALLY given the opportunity to vote for Anyone who wasn't white, male and rich? Whoa, that certainly gives new meaning to the term 'sweeping generalization." AND, about our unstable friend Doug: I can only deduce that at some point in his life he was either 1) rejected by a woman who happened to be a registered Democrate, or 2) run over by a Democrat's campaign bus because everything I've read by this loony tune since before the 2008 election has been an hysterical rant against every Democrat who has ever existed, without a shred of factual backup or explanation. Also (and This is just certifiiable talk) they're terrible, thoughtless, mean, bad drivers too! Someone should compile all Doug's comments – it would make a great commentary on the unstable personality.
