Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."
Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.
"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.
He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."
Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.
"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."
Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Anyone who believes in the rhetorical nonsense said by any presidential hopeful as of right now is brainwashed, in my opinion. None of them are what this country needs. Who cares what race votes for who? The fact that this country still puts so much emphisis on race in elections is appalling. Skin color is not going to make a president better or worse. Give me someone that actually wants to WORK and FIGHT for the UNITED PEOPLE. I do not care what race they are. I do not care what religion they are. I do care about the best interest of our country. When I hear and see someone who I can believe in, that will be a happy day.
just like mr cain thinks that ceo's deserve multi million dollar payouts and golden parachutes and the employee's are "brainwashed into accepting substandard pay, substandard pay increases, increased health care cost burden, right to work "rules", and the notion that he actually deserves to be greedy in dragging most of the profits to his bank account..that's real brainwashing....the public is tired of these aristocrats..black or white.
Mr. Fetchin Steppin is trying to spit in people's faces and tell them it's raining.
I like Cain. If he doesn't get the nomination, I hope he's on the ticket as VP. I like everything he has said....except for the 9-9-9 plan. I do not favor a national sales tax of any kind.
Party of Lincoln...need I say more.
Cain is a leader and an achiever. He doesn't live on Uncle Sam's plantation. WAKE UP!!!!
I found the writer's opening line disturbing and poorly written. in fact it shows a negative bias which takes away from the truthful words of our next president
Some of you have obviously ben brainwashed by the CNN garbage they spew out daily. If the Dems/libs are so for the peopel then why is unemployment still over 9%? And why are more people than ever on welfare / foodstamps? Do you really believe the welfare system will ever make people well off? No! It is designed to keep people poor so they can give them just enough to survive and keep getting re-elected. Yeah, conservatives want to reform welfare and yeah that will take money from welfare recipients... so they can learn to stand on their own two feet again and hopefully make something of their lives. Look around, who did Obama give all the money to? Poor, down trodden, homeless people? NO! He gave it to rich corporations who in turn gave him some back for his campaign. The Dems are not for the public, they just tell you they are and you blindly beleive them.
I'm waiting to see an article on CNN that refers to Cain as a "former federal reserve bank chair" or "former VP for Pillsbury" or former Coca Cola executive" or "Math expert" AND I WILL FREAK! if I every read on CNN that President Obama – "The only black running for the democrats for reelection for president"
This Cain guy is crazy. Look at all the wonderful things the Democrats have done for the peoples of color in the last 40 years. All the great programs that have strengthen the families, made neighbors wonderfully safe, great schools, many educated youths and the list goes on......
Also known as Communism and Stalin and his cronies were not poor but everyone else was
Actually as a minority both black and hispanics have been influenced by miswritten history books and the bias media to vote "democrat". My family years before were democrat, but after researching and realizing that taking personal responsibility and wanting to grow our own buisnesses wasnt the way the dems look at it. All of the commentators that are against CAin. yeah say what you want and most of you may be white too, but this man has what it takes. Whether your retard or not, he knows whats up. Oh and lets not forget folks that the democrats were the ones that enslaved black ppl and Lincoln (Republician) freed the slaves. Bye Bye Obama and your false "HOPE"
Blacks voted for the white Presidents in large percentages over previous black candidates PRIOR to Prresident Obama. Those previous black candidates were: Shirley Chisolm, Lenora Fulani, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton and Alan Keyes. None of those candidates received 90% of the black vote.
Although these FACTS have been and will continue tobe "overlooked" by those,Black and White, that insist on denying the truth and stating otherwise, I thank you for posting them nonetheless.
When a White person votes White it's alright, but when a Black person votes Black he needs to step back. WTH??!
After reading a few of the responses to Herman Cain's views, most of you solidify exactly what he is trying to convey, I.E., you are brainwashed by liberal media and the democratic party.
94% of the blacks that voted, voted liberal, not conservative in the last presidential election. You people are that vote democrat have no idea that you are ushering in the socialist party from Europe. The US is on the verge of falling into the same handout welfare state as those in Europe. Keep doing the stupid and before long, it catches up to you. It's kind of interesting to see all of you on the left, with your revisionist history, attack a black man for having different views than yours. This proves that you're not in support of black people, but rather their politics........fools........
Cain is the Godfather of the $5/hour pizza job. What has he done for the middle class? Answer: Nothing! What has he done for himself? Answer: Get rich and assume he knows it all! Typical Republican mantra...find someone else to blame.
Read your history:
The Republicans had the under ground railroads
The Republicans freed the slaves
The Republicans elected black representatives after the Civil War
The Republicans fought against Jim Crow laws
The Republicans got the blacks the right to vote
Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was you guessed it a Republican.
The Democrats still have Blacks living on their plantation, taking their votes and giving them the crumbs from the table.
Herman Cain wants to end that; open your eyes people & truly be free, you are better than a hand out.
"I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." - John Galt
I am certain that Mr. Cain is a very good man with very good intentions, but this last statement was far from being presidential. This has to be the poorest choice of words used by any candidate during this election cycle (of course Palin tops the list of awful statements).
Maybe Mr. Cain should consider doing radio...he definitely has the shock factor perfected!
Am starting to dislike this man Cain. Does he mean that black people can not think themselves and see what is wrong and what is right? I do think him using the word "brainwashed" is an insult!
Yes you do. And while your at it don't overlook the blatant racism being espoused from the Congressional Black Caucus. Also, all of you posters alluding to the racist tea parties...please provide us with examples of such racism.

Here's one sparky:
Bachmann being on board with African American children being better off as slaves. That didn't take long did it? Next question.
The people that complain about the wealthy will for ever be poor because they fololow people and political leaders that tell them there inferior and that the white bis keeping them down. Blame the rich its the republicans and on and on. STOP and think about this they have you programmed. You have a good brain think for yourselves. And begin to say I can and I will and make it happen. Depending on the DEMOCRATS for 50 years only has gotten you baby mommas galore and welfare and no jobs and a unreal thinking. No success in the thinking of the black community only blame someone else. You can achieve don't believe the lies of the poverty pimps. They need to keep you as a community down so they can feed you this garbage keeping you poor and dependent on the democratic party who do this stuff to you only because they need your vote.
Cain do you think if you insulting people like that you will win black people hearth?Anyway,Republican&Tparty are just using you for now.
Everything Cain has said is correct. Democrat nanny-state digressives don't like when people start talking about self-sufficiency and hard work. It goes against their digressive collective natures. They also get scared sh|tless when a real black man comes along and threatens to steal their precious black voting base.
Cain for President!!
What has the Democrat Party done for the black community after all these years? Someone answer that with some logic. History proves that more Democrats voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964...is that change you can believe in? As long as they keep regurgitating the same talking points and blacks still vote for them the trend will continue, and blacks will continue to be in the same place they are in now...on the Democrat's Plantation.
And the majority of blacks see someone like Cain going against the norm and he is branded a Token or Oreo or Uncle Tom? I don't believe Cain is the one with the problem.
The GOP would probably get more black votes if they actually let go of Nixon's "southern strategy". Sadly, even if the more moderate leaders in the party would like to wish it away, this undercurrent still exists. And I think the logic which follows is that the typical black American is intelligent enough to sense the still-glowing embers of the southern strategy in the GOP, and vote elsewhere.
RE: "BRAINWASHED?!?!? No, we are not brainwashed. Republican elected officials consistently legislate against minorities....CONSISTENTLY. ...They were against the Civil Rights act"
You might want to do some research on Eisenhower and civil rights, and the party of Jim Crow before you embarass yourself in public.
