Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."
Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.
"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.
He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."
Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.
"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."
Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Simply by choosing to refer to Hermain Cain as "Godfather's Pizza Executive" speaks to the writer's desire to label him one of the so-called corporate "fat cats". Those who don't pay attention are influenced by these subtle slants. Well done!
Cain (or any conservative), merely by running and winning saves the country. O's out of office, hopefully imprisoned shortly thereafter for malfeasance. Cain, Ryan, Paul, Rubio, Santorum, Joe the Plumber – infinitely superior to the current subversive that y'all seem to love.
That comment is not intended to pursuade anyone that possesses so little sense that they could stand another 4 years of deliberate destruction of American values and culture. Lost causes, unsuited for rehabilitation. They are the enemy, and should know that their skin color neither helps nor hinders the way they are perceived. Simply, they are enemy; deserving defeat at the ballet box and the battlefield.
Lets set the record straight. Of the 28 (+-) pieces of civil rights legislation put before the Congress and Senate since the 1920s, Republicans supported them about 89% of the time and Democrats only 25% of the time. per the Congressional Record...look it up.
Al Gores father filibustered against the Civil Rights Act...a Democrat!! The Democrats were the party that wanted a black man to count as 2/3 of a vote, and Republicans stood firm and made it one man one vote.
I have heard a black congressman from SC (Clyburn) say "Republicans haven't supported civil rights through history"...he's an illiterate race baiter...he should know the facts before he speaks.
Think about the black community as a whole its down trodden why its a mindset who put it there. The same people that keep telling you to blame the rich and the republicans. They have you enslaved in your ,minds to a failure type mentality. No other community in America is so depressed and so beaten down. Only the black community. Hermann Cain daddy was a janitor so hen wasn't wealthy. Hermann Cain ought to be an example to the youth of black community of respectibility and success . Cain was the top dog and successful in many of the biggest corporations in the USA and the education and so on.
This guy does not know his own black folks. MOST blacks, by defination, have conservative views; however, when it comes to civil rights, blacks are democratic in which the democratic talks to blacks. Republicans IGNORE the over black community. yes, they make pick and few "peppers" in order to make you think they care, but Republicans do not care to talk to the black community. the last Republican who talked to blacks was Lincoln.
While promoting Herman Cain as a "job Creator" his backers neglected to mention that in his first year at Godfather Pizza he shut down nearly half of their restaurants in order to turn a small profit. Even if each one he closed had only ten employees thats over 4000 jobs he snuffed. Some creator.
Yet another claim that the Black voting population is lock, stock and barrel with Democratic politics. Wrong. In many cases people pick the worst of the two evils. It would be more thoughtful to analyze the politics of poverty than the politics of race. I have voted for both Republicans and Democrats and have been equally grieved by their decisions while in power. To simply assume that there is no research, no investigation, no choice or no thought process simply guarantees that there is one more Republican that will not earn my vote. Thinking people, working people, educated people, homeowners, family centered folks, compassionate conservatives.... and Black. Cain isn't evolved enough for that.
Most blacks are poor and the Democratic party is the party of free give aways for the poor. Why wouldn't they vote Democratic? Does anyone seriously think the 50% of voters who pay no income tax are going to vote against their self interest? It is two wolves and a lamb deciding what's for dinner.
Any segment of the population that votes for either party to the tune of 95% is brainwashed. By voting as such a big block they essentially get taken for granted. I love the comment that the GOP doesn't go to the black community, why should they? Even Obama didn't visit any black communities on his Midwest bus tour, he knows they're in his back pocket. The black community would be much better served if they were a block that was in play.
That's right there is nothing as iconic as an African American that votes Against His Own Interests. The rich white Republicans love him.
The GOP would never accept a black man in the lead seat. That would mean he would have a white man (gasp) or white woman (oh, the humanity) as a VP.
Wow, all you people here who think the Dems serve the people... Wake the heck up, both parties are looting this country and both parties work for JP Morgan and the global elites. What Cain is saying is true that Blacks have been brainwashed into thinking affirmative action (rascism) is a good road to take. The Dems provide nothing but poverty for they voters, look at Detroit, Louisiana, LA, or any place that is ruled by the Democrats. Abject povery, but still they vote away for those who speak wonderful words but who's action lead to fewer jobs and growing poverty. Heck we elected a Community Orgaizer, the equalvalant of a burger flipper to run the country because he was black, I'm not qualified to run the country either but heck I run circles around Obama and I'm just middle management!
So, does that mean that the conservitive chrisians repubs are brain washed by the republican party. Heck, the republican party claims to be the party of god and a vote for dems is ani-christian.
If that is not brainwashing, I do not know what is.
Politicians are not good christian politicians, they are christians so the can "become" politicians. It is simply a requirment in our silly country that you "appear" to believe in god.
The republican party has used god like a tool to serve their politcail needs.
Anyone who sticks with the same party over and over is brainwashed.. God forbid that another individual that " belongs " to another party has a valid idea that would help the greater nation as a whole.. 90% of Americans wouldn't even listen, or they would, but only hear what the media says about it. Which most times is bias.. We are doomed unless someone publicly starts addressing that matter..
Now who exactly is brainwashed?
The only reason Obama got the nomination in the first place is because he was black. Dems knew that the were losing the black vote and had to do something, so they put Obama on the ticket.
After reading a few of the comments regarding this article, I am deeply upset at how entreached some of these people are with their views. Most of the truly believe Republicans are the devil and Democrats are their saviour. This country, and our politics will always be divided as long as the electorate has such extreme ideas about the other side. Most of these poeple will say, "what have you done for me lately." They want their votes bought and that is what the democratic party is all about.
Thank you, Herman for that insightful diatribe. By the way, on the way out the door, after you thank the democrats for making it possible for you to be where you are today, please try not to trip over your ego. We liberals don't have much stomach for ungrateful hand biters.
So let's see. Joining a party that supports disenfranchising poor voters, a party that has rallied behind its Southern Strategy to attract masses of racist Dixie-crats (and has succeeded), a party that opposes desegregation unless it is done with local popular support (again, see disenfranchised voters), a party that does not vocally oppose racial profiling techniques used by law enforcement...and the list goes on and on. Frankly, Mr. Cain, I have to wonder who, in fact, is the branwashed one. Perhaps its the black man who joins the Republican Party so that he can credibility with his white cronies at the Chamber of Commerce.
I always wonder how many black Americans realize that Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. were both Republicans, while segregationists like Lester Maddox, George Wallace and Albert Gore, Sr. all started as Democrats and openly opposed the civil rights movement, But then I supposed those facts are not taught in our liberal schools. Tell is like it is Mr. Cain.
I've seen a lot of comments about how Democrats "take care of us", "watch out for the middle class", etc. You do realize the government is attempting to make you dependent on them right? Sounds like black silent helicopters I know but that is what liberalism, socialism etc. is. I've got an idea, how about you actually take care of yourself? Take responsiblity for your actions and make the tough choices to get YOURSELF ahead in life instead of waiting for the government to do it. Go grab your fishing pole and go fishing instead of waiting for the government to hand you a fish.
It's not the government's job to hold your hand and take care of all of your needs. It's YOURS!
As for civil rights and what political party did what for Black People. The Republican Party has since the Civil War voted in FAVOR Of all Civil Rights Isues. Look it up!!! Thousands of Republican Soldiers GAVE thier lives to Free the Slaves in the South.
The kkk were Democrats who orgeaized to control the freed Slaves and thier rights. The Civil Rights Acts in the 60's were all Republican Sponsered Laws. Look It UP.
Poor pepole have fallen for the Democratic B.S. and voted for Democrats for 50 years Looking for help. They are Still POOR. What does that tell you?
I love you all Howie
For all those stating how the Democrats started the KKK, voted against Civil Rights, MLK was a Republican, Byrd this Thurmond that. Got it. Decades ago..... Fast forward to RECENT events,in the past 20 years or so. How have the Republicans "embraced" Blacks and Hispanic? And I mean the general population of Blacks and Hispanics not your Colin Powell, Condoleezas and Clarence "Pube" Thomas? They haven't. As soon as they realized that we weren't voting for them they turned their backs on us and walked away. Now they are trying to round up the Latinos and throw them out of the country because apparently they are the ONLY illegals in the US.....or at least the only ones they can 'profile' as illegals.
Whatever, dude. Democrats have REMNANTS of a commitment to civil rights (they didn't do much to save affirmative action, stand up for gay marriage, or ending torture in our POW camps) but are mostly a business friendly party, whereas Republicans are simply the party of corporate and wealthy interests with no respect for the environment, civil rights, the law, peace, tolerance for other religions and nationalities, gays, etc.
If a liberal had made Mr. Cain's comment, the remark would have been recieved much differently. Case in point, Bill Cosby. Mr. Cain's problem is that he's suggesting that black Americans jump ship and ride one going in the opposite direction.
