Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."
Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.
"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.
He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."
Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.
"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."
Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Steinak – you just showed the brainwashing and the closed mindedness. You are so single-mindedly Democrat that the mere idea of a black man being a Republican can only be because he's brainwashed and an Uncle Tom. You can't even entertain the idea that he may see something in the GoP policies that are worthwhile, so you simply close your mind and name-call.
This guy is a joke! But nobody's laughing. He is the "Brainwashed" Poster boy! Cain needs to take his 999 and go deliver more pizzas, oops he can't its bankrupt! Cain give it up you got as much a chance of going to WH as I do, NONE!
This guy is right on!
I have worked in a prominently AA area of the city. What I have noticed is a caring, church going community. They are hard working family oriented individuals that really care about their community and others that may suffer. It seems to me that the poorer they are, they realize that someone maybe worse off then they are. They give to their community schools, weather they give time, clothing, food, or just love...they seem to care about their fellow man. This is not shown in the latest GOP debates with audiences screaming out against those that may be suffering. This GOP and their audience does not represent the America I want to live in.
We are our brothers keeper.
So hateful, when I have talked to middle of the road Democrats and Republicans they seem to be a lot closer than anyone would think. But you throw this hate of the other party into it and then they all seem brainwashed and just do not want a chance of the other party being right. Hello we should want America to suceed and stop wondering what your party says about it but if it makes sense to try. Opps if we try it and it works then we may have to say the other party was right. Please stop the name calling we are Americans first. This is a country for free thinkers and are allowed to have their opinions. We do not need to spew hate for them thinking that way. You personally can free sorry they seem to have a closed or uninformed mind.
You know what, Mr Cain is right. White are also being brainwashed and marginalized. What ashame. But one can't help thinking "who" is behind these nefarious deeds. "Who" stands to gain.
“It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.” ~Voltaire
So everyone ask yourself if you are better off now, than you were 4 years ago? Thats what I thought! I am white I and I vote for character. Herman Cain has character and knowledge. Plus he is a commanman like the rest of us and NOT a politician. Politicans from both sides have ruined this country. How little you forget that Abe Lincoln and MLK were Republicans, The KKK were Democrats and LBJ sealed all minorities' fates and brainwashed all. MLK would be proud of Mr. Cain !
brainwashed just like those trailor park republicans who vote to end the social programs that directly bennefit them (ie food stamps/unemployment/public schools/college grants/medicaid). With so many supporters of a republican canditate , i didn't realize there were so many multi-millionaires in this country.
Yes, African Americans have been brainwashed into believing the GOP is about 98.9% white and has been using racial fear as a wedge to garner white votes throughout the South for 40 years. Wait a second ...
It's hard to take someone seriously who concludes something like this to be pure and simple. The world is usually much more complicated.
One reason why Cain will never be nominated by amajor party much less become President. He is not an Ivy Leaguer. One must be a member of that club in order to become president.
You think government is broken now, If Cain could possible win the presidency (Which he can't because there is not enough stupid black people to vote for him) wait and see how broken it will be then. They are not going to allow him to speak to him as Christy does. He seems very stubborn and stuck in the pass so the government still won't get anything done. Is he Belize or what because he is definitely not a Black man.? Does anyone know?
Lyndon Johnson, the man who engineered the War on Poverty, Urban Renewal and welfare system payout that destroyed the Black family and the inplace plan to bring all the Brothers and Sisters in. Made us forget that M L King was a Republican, that Jim Crow was a Southern Dixie/Democrat. As far as con men go, L B J makes President Obama look small time and amateurish. There are actual YouTube recordings of him and his secret racist rhetoric. If you care to fact check.
I can see why this is a nation of C and D students.. So many of you people know only bits and pieces of history and have failed miserably in presenting a relevant valid argument. Its too many to rebut..
I will say this, for you idiots to just blanket all black people as not voting based on qualifications but only by race is to insult the intelligence of every black person. When the truth based on your weak, incoherent, and incomplete arguments makes you the ignorant, unintelligent ones.
I'm black and nearly rich. I got that way by voting for the candidate who showed interest in fairness for everyone and not for by race. I would vote for the person who had everyone's interest at heart. That is why I am voting for Obama.
Blacks were not brainwashed. They were bought with Food Stamps and Welfare checks by the democracts, who love to keep minority groups in a position of subserviance.
Black people are not supporting the party of fascism and evil.
Democrats only want black money and black votes. Then they bend them over.
What an irresponsible article. The article gives a completely twisted slant and impression on what Cain actually said. And worse, the quotes are even wrong! After reading the article I watched the video expecting to see him making insulting statements and instead found that what he said was completely reasonable and postive.
Cain thinks blacks are brainwashed, coming from the Republican parties token balck I not surprised he believes this. Herman before throwing all your chips in because you think they've let you into the party maybe you should check on the careers of fellow Black Republicans Alan Keyes and JC Watts after they've serve their usefulness to you party of hate.
Today's national Republicans are 1964's Southern Democrats: a hardened ideological party with a power-base mostly in the South, disdainful of civil rights, fearful of immigrants and brown people, and advocating states' rights over federal power. This would be an accurate description of a Democrat from Mississippi during the JFK/Johnson years; today, it describes the Republican in general. Hopefully, they'll go the same way: history.
This is just a prime example of the GOP not getting it. In '08 they thought that by nominating a woman as McCain's running mate they would get the Hilary voters and now they think by nominating HC that they can get some of the African Americans. People who voted for Hilary and for Obama didn't vote for them because they were a woman and an African American, they voted for them because it was in their best interest to vote for them. Just because you have one generic thing in common with someone else (you're both women, african-american or whatever), does not make you exactly the same person, but apparently the GOP doesn't get that.
Dudefromdixie – stay in dixie. Cains message is such 9,9,9. Everyone even billionaires pay 9% tax. What is 9% of a billion. Not enough. His policies are juvenile. He can't think further that a business man can which is about profit for themselves. Forget everybody else. Where have i heard that from. Cain is not smart enough to become president. Everyone knows him. Is he form the US. Where is his original birth certificate. The one with the footprints on it. He sounds like a scared Uncle Tom.
I suppose that the party that was against the Civil Rights Act and Voters Right Act of the 60's, for the 'Southern Strategy' and that uses Willie Horton scare tactics to win votes, that invokes 'states rights' code-speak in the south, redistricts regions to disenfranchise specifically large black districts and continues to argue against any affirmative action should be supported...After all, liking someone who has shown a complete distaste for you is 'open-minded', right Mr. Cain?
