Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."
Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.
"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.
He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."
Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.
"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."
Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

if some one is brainwashed inside african americans comunities, definately it is CAIN,cain failed to understand that a piece of wood thrown in the sea can never become fish, his presence on tv shows is more like entertainments movies than a presidential candidate campaign speach.
No! Herman Cain is the flavor of the week. What's brainwashed is his thinking that he's gonna win republican nomination. He needs to go back selling pizza.
I can't believe some of these comments. Republicans are for the rich?? Okay, does GE and the Democratic party ring a bell anyone?? Of course, it's difficult to face the truth. Anyways, most african americans I know (living here in Atlanta) are conservative and have conservative values. So in essance, Herman Cain is right. Why is it that most African Americans vote Democratic yet their beliefs tend to be complete opposite? Maybe "brainwashing" is a harsher term, but none the less, true.
Just remember that the more democrats voted against the 1964 Voting Rights act then republicans ... including your super hero Robert Byrd and Al Gore Sr.... Byrd even tried to Fillibuster it! So don't say that the republicans are the racist party... the republicans as a party had 80% support for this while the racist democrats had 61%...read history and open your color blinded eyes!
Michael Steele 2.0. What a tool. LOL.
Republicans are really funny (I mean REALLY). They have gone from 1) George Bush to 2) John McCain to 3) Sarah Palin to 4) Michelle Bachmann and Mitt Romney to 5) (something) Perry to 6) (something) Cane. I can almost guarantee that none are readers, none have a sense of history (except McCain in prison), and none has an IQ above 115. GUARANTEE. The drums are rolling while we wait for the next ORDINARY (ugh) person to take front and center.
What about the right-wing fringe groups that think we cohabitated with dinosaurs? They didn't learn that in school (I hope), so somebody brainwashed them . . .
We have ALL been brainwashed to believe the lies of Corporations and those who serve them. May they all stand trial for their crimes against humanity to make more money than God. Money Addicts, why is there no program for these Monsters?
Cain is absolutely right. Blacks keep voting Dem and nothing ever changes. Dems keep feeding blacks this class warfare garbage and the blacks just get suckered right into it.
The great thing about claiming the other side is "brainwashed" is that then you don't have to explain or defend your own illogical, dumb or destructive ideas. I finally heard - notably, *not* from Herman Cain - what 9-9-9 is supposed to be. I don't need to be "brainwashed" to oppose this incredibly wrong-headed idea; I only need to reflect on my own finances and where I want the country to go (which is not in a "the rich get even richer" direction). I assume others are doing the same thing, and coming to the same conclusion. "Brainwashed" is just a smokescreen for Cain to hide his own regressive policy proposals. Maybe that sort of stuff flies with some people but most don't need to be "brainwashed" to turn away.
"We will resist to the bitter end any measure or any movement which would have a tendency to bring about social equality and intermingling and amalgamation of the races in our (Southern) states." Richard Russell (DEMOCRAT)
The bill [1964 Voting Rights Act] came before the full Senate for debate on March 30, 1964 and the "Southern Bloc" of 18 southern Democratic Senators and one Republican Senator led by Richard Russell (D-GA) launched a filibuster to prevent its passage. – 17 Democrats and 1 republican...hmmm who are the racists???
He is 100% right ...group think supported by public education...those african americans who are successful know the deal ...brainwashing by democrats ironically they have been pushing for diversity but practicing segregation
Iam one of those brainwashed blacks that herman cain spoke about. My message to herman cain is to stop pandering to the tea party, they will treat you just like the rest of us. It is time that we get young uncorruted ideas and people into government. someone that is not for sale , some who will truely represent the folks that sent them there, iam sad to say that herman cain is not that person, he is just another rich politician who will use the position of POTUS to get even richer. No thanks herman cain.
One of the bloggers here called Cain an Uncle Tom...That comment is itself an example of how blacks continue to foster old ideas and is racist. Democrats have taken a position on many social issues that are detrimental to black Americans. Instead of helping people up, democrats continue to provide and support programs that keep people impoverished.. There are two ways to feed yourself when you are hungry. works and earn your meal or wait for a hand out. Democrats seem to focus o the latter. While they point to the many programs designed to improve peoples chance in the world..the truth is most are money pits and have failed. Many say the Republicans want to dismantle the many social safety net programs put n place over the years.. ask yourself are you happy with the results so far??? Maybe it time for blacks in america to consider a change.
To hear HERMAN CAIN proclaim that the blacks in America should not continue down the path of being 'brainwashed' by the Democrat party is as refreshing and true as it is to hear the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sing NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
What exactly have the democrats done for the black community, other than champion policies that say you can't do it on your own, you must rely on the government for your needs from cradle to grave. how demoralizing. what a depressing message. like Bill said above, the knee-jerk reactions only prove Cain's point.
I think Cain is bringing some good points to the conversation and would like to here more from him. hopefully the media gives him a fair shake. not likely though.
Wow...The majority of the comments posted, while absolutely ludicris, actually prove the point Herman Cain was making. For months I've been thinking Cain should be the nominee, not because he's black, because he's exactly what this country needs : A business man who hasn't been corupted by the politics of Washington. To say that the repubilcans and the Tea party are racist shows complete ignorance. What's racist is voting for a non-qualified presidential candidate just because he's black. An example of what black Americans have gained from blindly following the liberal democrats is Katrina!! No the suffering in New Orleans wasn't Bush's fault, or FEMA's fault, or the evil racist Tea party's fault.....It was the end product of a century's old dem stronghold on the city, which created entire neighborhoods of people who had no clue what to do without the governments help. Katrina hit Biloxi Mississippi too, and the people helped themselves and eachother!!!
brain washing is not necessarily a bad especially if it is a dirty brain. anyways Uncle Cain is an elitist by his whole sale statement. extra cheese please
Brilliant, memorable statement that needed to come from a black man. Beyond that how many of us are "brainwashed" – and for that matter look how much money is spent on brainwashing. We're bombarded with propagandized, often false information and sound bites. Debates are high on rhetoric and biting attacks and low on encouraging anyone to have an open mind and really think deeply about solutions to real problems. But "safe districts" have become ridiculous – you know which way many urban / rural districts will vote before the election starts. It often just comes down to how much of a district goes a certain way. But the racial votes even. And why? If more people who desperately need better paying jobs could just see that at the very least all the good ideas are not on one side, but even better that long term solutions aren't equal to long term welfare, but the very tax breaks and less government that promote job creation as advocated by many in the GOP.
I like this man alot next to Romney. He is so articulate and gets right to the point on the issues.

– Geese, not another "He speaks so well" compliment... typical. You might as well have said "Some of my best friends are black."
I am an independent. I would have no problem voting for Cain. He is an articulate business man. He understands the damage that the liberal/progressive have done to this country. The Democrats are trying to destroy this country. Not sure why. It is possible that they want Sharia Law. Not sure of their motives.
How about this: Cain/Bachman. The economy would come roaring back and we would have the greatest nation on earth again. If we re-elect President Teleprompter, it will be too late. We could not recover from the economic destruction that he supports.
Some of the comments on this site would be comical if they were not so sad.. Blacks voting for a candidate who can do the most for them? Really... the Democratic party has been pandering to the black community since the Johnson adminstration (the war on poverty) today nearly 45 years later, we have more poverty in the black community not less, 70% of black children are born out of wedlock, 40 million plus black babies aborted? (that is genocide by anyone's definition) and you still say the Democrats have done alot for that community? How about this... we do for ourselves and not rely on the government to do for us...The only thing the government can do is take from one segment from the population to give it to another.. for those of you who are christians that breeds covetness...those of you who are not it means you are jealous of what others have earned and you want some of it even though you didnt earn it. that is the legacy of the democrats "helping" the black community... an entire generation has become dependant on the government. When you dont need something you are truely free, when you depend on another for your subsistance then you are a slave....
The only thing I keep reading on here is how republicans don't pander to blacks for votes thats why they vote democratic!
I am personally offended by that outlandish remark You cannot be brainwashed when you have choices. if it werent for the Democrats, Cain would be delivering pizzas! thank God for the civil rights act of 1965
The truth hurts. Really hurts.
Really, really hurts.
