Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.
"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."
Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.
"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.
He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."
Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.
"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."
Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Thank You Mr. Cain for removing yourself from being a viable candidate for President. As usual your butt has overroad your mouth and disconnected your brain. No one could have done a better job of removing you from contention, at least your good at something. You see being a political person is not like being a boss or owner. You cannot fire anyone but the public can sure fire you.
Herman Cain is awesome. There is someone I can respect who is trying to lead the way in turning the debate into a debate of policies instead of race. I wish Obama had the same moral compass.
Sometimes it feels like the Red Coats have returned. I go with the Red, White & Blue any day !
People really need to review historical records before they comment on how the Republican Party handles issues with race. The Civil Rights Act was Passed because the Repiblican party work to get it through. Southern Democracts had filibustered the passing in the Senate. On the original Bill in the Senate 23 of the 67 or 34% Democrats voted against the bill, 6 of the 33 or 18% Republicans voted against the bill. In the House 39% of Democrats and 20% of Republicans voted against the bill. This shows the real picture of the Democrat Party.
Did Mr. Cain clear his comments with Morgan Freeman first? Doesn't Mr. Cain realize that he is a racist for trying to unseat President Obama???
No matter how successful he may be, how Cain can align himself with a party that has unabashedly used race to sow fear and get votes (Willie Horton, anyone?) is beyond me. I don't know if blacks in general are brainwashed, but I know at least one is ... and he proves it at every debate.
Perhaps he used the wrong term. Brainwashed sounds too insulting, which indicates you allowed yourself to get duped. He's not going to win any hearts and minds with that. He should have said "Too long entrenched in the mantra of the 'What can the government do for you' party." If he said that all you can really be at fault for is following the incentives. I think that would have been a friendlier way to get the point across.
Blacks just refuse to stop feelling sorry for themselves. Herman Cain thinks of himself as an American first and does not put his color before everything else. Everyone that expects or thinks the government owes them something (including every color) will vote for a democrate because they want to "spread the wealth" That has been proven IT DOES NOT WORK. This country will go down and EVERYONE will go with it. Just look at the black figures-high unemployment, babies out of wedlock. The whites are more sucessful because they work to get it.
I notice a lot of the comments bashing Herman Cain and calling him an Uncle Tom and like are making it past the moderation, but very few of the comments are supporting him or inviting debate on his talking points, and seeing as this page is posted on drudge I know there's some Cain supporters here. Feedback bias from the moderators maybe?
I've yet to hear how Mr. Cain's 9-9-9 Tax plan is a bad thing, for anyone or for the economy, I've yet to hear how his stance on less government interferance and regulation in our lives is a bad thing. All i've heard is that Republicans are racists trying to hide the fact by 'pretending' to support Mr Cain, how he's a glorified pizza delivery guy 'yes masser'ing' to the Good 'ole condescending white boys running tihs country into the ground.
You hypocrites make me sick.
WOW – another multi millionaire CEO thinks the republicans are just great! Herman Cain has NO chance of being the GOP candidate for 2012; the rest of the GOP still hates him. These phony straw polls mean nothing – What did he received a total a few hundred “protest votes”?
What this guy needs is a good brain-washing.. Obviously his is filled with Crap!!
Blacks need to get out of the "they don't try to engage the Black communicty" thinking. Conservatives don't single out individual communities because they look at everyone EQUALLY. Not the "Black" community, not the "Anglo" community, not the "Hispanic" community, etc. We're all Americans with "equal rights" ... not special rights just becuase of the color of your skin. And equal doesn't mean you're not going to get the shaft every once in the while...that's life! Get over yourselves & deal with it!
Can I get a large, with pepperoni, mushrooms and extra cheese?
There are so many morons in this discussion. The 1960's feel-good efforts to 'help' black people have failed. The so-called 'war on poverty has failed.' The war on drugs have failed. The inner-city schools still suck. How many of the Democrats ill-designed programs have failed, spending trillions of tax dollars just to help black people and that's why blacks vote Democratic. If a politician told me that I would get lots of consistent cash if I voted for him, I might just do that. I like Cain and think he has some good ideas that need to be honed. He's black, I'm white, so what? If a black man or woman walked into a tea party meeting wanting more information, they would be welcomed. It's BS to think any other way. Grow up people. BTW – A Democratic Senator from Tennessee did not want the Civil Rights act to pass – Al Gore's father.
Bribed, not brainwashed.
If Cain wants the Black vote he needs to show how Blacks can empower themselves and help raise their standard of living, and offer real solutions, not just to vote Republican. As it is now, only Democrats "appear" to have the best interests for minorities in mind. Republicans have only addressed issues that affect to the wealthy and middle-class, when there are millions of people, Blacks, Whites and other minorities, living below the poverty line. He needs to show that living on the public assistance should be a temporary, stop-gap solution, not a way of life. Unfortunately, I have not seen Democrats do this.
"For tea-partiers, race is irrelevant: Being a Godfather’s Pizza CEO apparently is proof of greater accomplishment than a long political career, an Ivy League degree, or a distinguished tenure on Wall Street." I journalist made the above final statement in his article about the current racial situation in America...and the harsh realities of being the nations first mixed-raced Black President...The T-Party don't care about Race..?.! "Divide and Conquer!!" They will continue to play a game of Chicken with Cain as they did Michele Bachmann and Perry will end up getting the Republican nomination...Guess who will win..:0)
If Republicans can get low information rednecks to vote GOP and against their own interests, why not black people too !
Everyones welcome in the big tent !
I'm not brainwashed. I have three advanced degrees and can think for myself. Conservative is another for screw. Minorites and women have been screwed for jobs, education and the right to determine what to do about their own bodies. Mr. Cain needs a reality check. At the end of the day, he is a black man pretending that he has never been discriminated against and is really just one of the white boys. The conservative will throw him under the bus just like they did Michael Steel the former head of the RNC. He was the African Americn wunderkindt. Now his is just a used up and deluded black man. Out od sight out of mind. This is your future Mr. Cain.
Speak for yourself UNCLE Cain!
It kills me that people buy into some idea that Obama has caused the joblessness – Republicans have refused at every angle to penalize companies that take their jobs offshore which is a huge part of the joblessness problem. Neither did he cause the economic problems- Republicans started two wars that they did not even put on the books – trillions of dollars ignored as if never spent and now they want to destroy public education, grants for college, training programs and Medicare and Social Security – all Democratic ideals of what this country is all about. Americans vote against their own best interests when they vote Republican unless they are part of the 2 per cent of the ultra wealthy. They vote against their own children and grandchildren when they vote for Republicans who are anti science and anti environmental protection. They vote against their own best interest when the vote for Republicans who want to protect big oil, big corporations, and big polluters instead of helping working class families. It is not about black or white, it is about democracy and voting for those people who care about Americans! The Supreme Court took away our democracy when it ruled that corporations are individuals and can give as much money to candidates as they want – Hence, the Koch brothers who spent millions on hate and lies in ads against progressives to get those elected who will bust unions, cut teachers and other public workers benefits and try to force people to work for slave wages ( no matter what color they are) Get real Americans- people are working three and four jobs just to support a family – you act like people, especially minorities just want to live on welfare and food stamps- try doing that yourselves to see if it is so cushy. That is bull***&^ propaganda from the right wing just like Herman Cain and his cronies.
Cain, you won a straw poll. You won because of protest votes. Do you seriously think that Republicans would support a black man? The repubs and tea party are working tirelessly to oust a black man already in office. Use your head, man.
I'm black and quite capable of thinking for myself. I also know the history of the Republican party and civil rights and I know that Lincoln was a Republican. None of that seems to line up with the Republican party of today. All I see is a group of people who want nothing more than to beat President Obama in 2012. It doesn't matter if what they say or don't do impacts everyday citizens of this country, just so long as they win in 2012. How very sad. I thought the government was supposed to be for the people, not the party.
I am black and educated. The reasons blacks don't vote republican is because they are always talking negative about the black community.. Fox news says it all... I would not vote for Cain... I would vote for MItt Romney
"Your kind has made NO effort to engage us." YOUR KIND? What a racist comment to make.
