Cain: Black community 'brainwashed' into voting for Dems

Washington (CNN) - The one African-American running for the GOP presidential nomination said Wednesday the black community was 'brainwashed' for traditionally siding with liberal politicians.

"African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Godfather's Pizza executive Herman Cain said on CNN's "The Situation Room" in an interview airing Wednesday between 5-7 p.m. ET. "I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple."

Cain went on to explain that his interactions with African Americans led him to be optimistic about his own chances with the demographic.

"This whole notion that all African-Americans are not going to vote for Obama is not necessarily true," Cain said.

He continued, "I believe a third [of African-Americans] would vote for me, based on my own anecdotal feedback. Not vote for me because I'm black but because of my policies."

Cain also weighed in on the recent chatter surrounding Chris Christie, saying the recent reports the New Jersey governor is reconsidering a run for president were hurting the electorate.

"It's not insulting as much as it is a disservice to the American people," Cain said. "Chris Christie has been saying for a long time he's not interested in running. The media is trying to create a story by sucking Chris Christie into race, just like they made a story by sucking Rick Perry into the race."

Cain said the media should focus on the candidates who have already declared their candidacy to give voters a better idea of the field.

Watch The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer weekdays at 4pm to 6pm ET and Saturdays at 6pm ET. For the latest from The Situation Room click here.

Well Mr. Cain maybe that's because it's not about race or ethnicity but about class. Most Blacks are down here with a majority of Whites, working hard and only getting paid what we are worth. Which, strangely yet noticeably, has been less and less since the era of the infinitely valuable CEO - that would be you and your inflated ego, Mr. Cain - has rolled around. The Democrats are the party for those who earn what they get and rely on the government to protect their legal rights, to provide back-up if times get bad and a few extras (like parks and libraries and schools) that they can only afford by banding together. The Republicans are the party of the wealthy egotists who get paid as much as they can convince the other wealthy egotists they're worth - hey, it's not their money anyway, they can just squeeze it out of the workers and the customers! Conservative ideas aren't worth considering because at this point anyone who is conservative lives in some variety of la-la land - religious, economic, ideological, political, paranoid, you name it. Times are way too tight for most of us, Black or White, to even consider such lunacy as an option. As a purely practical matter, especially with CEOs like Mr. Cain and financial speculators like Mr. Romney bleeding us dry, we need a government that works. The Dems are the only ones offering that as an option. Obama 2012.

First of all, Herman Cain is not giving the African-American community enough credit for being able to think for themselves. Sounds to me like he's saying they don't have a mind of their own, and secondly, who is it that's "brainwashing" them? If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it's the republican politicians spewing out their hateful rhetoric because a black man became President. And as far as Mr. Cain saying that the media ought to focus on the already-declared candidates as opposed to Christie and Perry "to give voters a better idea of the field", I think he's sadly mistaken, because the reason they are placing the focus on Christie and Perry is EXACTLY because the voters HAVE viewed the current field – and they're not at all happy with them!

What a way to insult black people Cain. You must think they are too stupid to form their own opinion and vote Democrat-that they MUST have been brainwashed instead.

@Russ and @ThinkAgain, you both posted the EXACT TRUTH at almost the exact same time. The elites were able to con the rubes by keeping them downtrodden and while skillfully stroking their racism. It's why they are on the verge of nominating George W. Bush, II, but without the upper crust polish.

    We are so screwed.

Ok, forget it, it's not even worth a comment. Well maybe it is: He runs a large pizza joint and now he's qualified to lead the free world and lecture on race, ok I get it. Or, just take my order: I'll take two mediums sausage pizzas please.

"Lincoln was a progressive, not a conservative." ~
Just like Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Washington, etc., were all PROGRESSIVES ~ LIBERALS who worked hard as community organizers against the conservative and backward looking torries who worshipped tradition and the old ways of power for the few over many (monarchy).
HAHAHA just seeing this must make those tee-bagger's pea-brains pop!!

Brainwashed? Or is it simply the promise of goodies in exchange for votes? In either case, the appeal does not seem to have anything to do with patriotism. Any such pandering is an insult to the better nature of anyone being targeted by it, whether it works or not. If I were the one being targeted, I'd move directly in the opposite political direction.

    The Voice of Reason stated:

"How quickly the people forget that the Democratic party of the early-mid 20th century were the ones in favor of racial segregation. It was only when the voter base was expanded, due to the Civil Rights movement that they changed to become the party of the 'little man'."

    ==================================================================================================

Hey 'Voice'......NEWS FLASH.......all those old southern Democrats that you speak of......they either switched parties or died before they had the chance.

After the Civil War until the early 1960's, pretty much ALL southern Whites were Democrats. And when the Northern Dems started pushing for equal rights, those southern Dems started leaving the party to become Republicans.

Essentually, southern White Republicans are the descendents of discontented Democrats who would rather switch parties than go along with a party plank (agenda) of equal rights for minorities. And Republicans still fight against that agenda.

Blacks have figured this out....that's why they tend to shun the Republican party.....it's all about knowing who your enemies are.....

In fact, republicans are more brainwashed that democrats because the republican politicians get to them through religion, but screw them over any way they can (give tax breaks to the rich when the gap between rich and middled class is only widening!), which most republican's don't realize because they are brainwashed. All they hear is, god this and jesus that and nothing else even matters to them. The sad thing is I don't really believe most politicians are even truly religions. They are just using it as a tool to get elected and then do whatever they want.

Let's be clear....African americans mostly vote democrat now, due to the voting rights act of 1965, and the civil rights act of 1964......These pieces of legislation where signed by a Democrat President......LBJ....He also said in signing that legislation, that democrats had lost the south for a generation....The dixiecrats (southern dems) were outraged and switched party affiliation to the GOP.......It's been that way ever since.
Long before this, in the days of Abraham Lincoln (R), blacks that did run for congress under reconstruction, where republicans.
All that being said, blacks are loyal to parties who give them opportunity, to live out the american dream. The funny thing is, that republicans used to be more progressive than democrats.

African-Americans have been brainwashed into not being open minded, not even considering a conservative point of view," Cain said.

Wow where do I start? First off Cain, not all African American vote Democrat. I will use me as an example, I voted for President Obama, not for the color of his skin, but because the team of Obama/Biden I felt was a better fit for American tha McCain/Palin. I also voted for Kay Bailey Hutchinson who is a Republican Senator. I also voted for a few more Republicans in our local races in Harris County. So you notion that all black people are brainwashed shows how far removed you are from your own community, let along how delusional you are as a person. And for all you people out there who keep saying African Americans vote democrat due to hand outs, I tell what, I'd be willing bet one day of my salary, which is more than most of you make in a year, that the combined income of my friends which most are African American, and annual income, is close, if not more than a 100 million per year. We are highly educated, most of us have doctorates in our persperctive fields, and none of us, not even our parents or grandparents, were given any handouts such as welfare. Heck, the only handout that I ever recieved was from G.W. Bush, which I didn't need in the first place. And my whole family and most of my friends call ourselves independents because we have no preference of Repuplican or Democrat, we vote who we think will benefit America as a whole. So so much for the brainwashed theory.

Last I will say, most African Americans do not want handouts, we want a far chance and a even playing field. Furthermore, whe was the last time a Republican went into a prodiminately African American community and spoke to us? When was the last time a Republican held a town hall meeting in an African American Community? Better yet, when has a Republican primary debate been held at a an historical black college? Exactly. Until the GOP shows that they will fight for us, treat us with respect and dignity, show concern for us, and GIVE us a reason to support them, yes, the Democrat Party will will have a large portion of the African American Community, Oh some stated the blacks dont vote for white candidates, how the h3ll do you think President Clinton got elected.....twice.

Folks in the black community are not "brainwashed", Mr. Cain, and are perfectly aware of what the Conservative message is. That message was delivered with dogs, fire-hoses, and nightsticks in the '60's, and by discrimination in employment, housing, education, political representation, law enforcement, and bank-lending practices ever since! By voting Democratic, black folks are acting in their own best interests.

Cain is the one who is brainwashed. He is a fool if he thinks black folks voted for Mr Obama because he is black. Cain will never get the black vote. He is a sell out and apart of the problem in politics. President Obama is for the people. People better wake up, blacks are not dum and stupid like this country would like the world to think. Wake up America .....

Take a look at the Republican leaders. Old, white and extremely wealthy.. I guess it couldn't be due to the fact they don't share any common ground and probably differ on core principles??

    1. What party stood for the abolition of slavery?
    2. Which party was more OPPOSED to the Civil Rights Act – democrats or republicans
    3. How much political clout can be exercised by a group that votes 90% for one party?

Answers: 1. Republican 2. Democrats – look it up 3. Voting 90% for any one party will result in NO political clout. The party that gets the 90% knows those votes are 'in the bag' and the party that gets the 10% knows that they can do nothing to improve upon that.
