McCain hails Libya as inspiration

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) - In his first visit to Libya since the fall of Moammar Gadhafi, Sen. John McCain hailed that nation's revolution as the showcase for the so-called Arab Spring but acknowledged a tough road lay ahead.

"The Libyan people have inspired the world," McCain said. "They have turned cynics into supporters."

Florida holds the cards as time ticks away for RNC

Washington (CNN) - With Florida officials refusing to back down from their plan to hold their presidential primary in January of next year, national GOP leaders worked nervously behind-the-scenes Thursday to keep their fragile nominating calendar intact.

A Republican-appointed commission in Florida is expected Friday to name Jan. 31 as the date of their 2012 presidential primary, a decision first reported by CNN on Wednesday.

Obama's race problem is black and white - and green

Washington (CNN) - Even as he charges into his re-election battle, President Barack Obama has a festering weakness on a flank that, by all accounts, ought to be rock solid: the one held by African-American Democrats. Their support for his programs, belief in his leadership and enthusiasm for another term is softening just as he needs it most.

In the past few weeks, the president has been chastised by the Congressional Black Caucus for avoiding troubled inner-city districts, peppered with tough questions on BET, and suffered plummeting poll numbers among black voters.

Poll: GOP more enthused than Dems

(CNN) - What a difference three years makes. A new poll released Thursday reveals Democrats seem to be suffering from a presidential election malaise.

Less than half say they're more enthusiastic than usual about voting in 2012, compared with Republicans, who are more enthused about voting than they were for most of 2008.

Early voting states issue warning on primary dates

Washington (CNN) – Amid a potential primary calendar shake-up, GOP chairs of the first four voting states –Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina– said Thursday they would do whatever it takes to hold onto their early voting status in 2012.

"The four sanctioned, early states have been very clear that we will move together, if necessary, to ensure order as outlined in RNC rules," said Iowa GOP chairman Matt Strawn in a joint statement. "If we are forced to change our dates together, we will."

The measure was part of a bipartisan agreement intended to end a dispute over disaster relief spending that threatened to cause a partial shutdown of the government when the current fiscal year ends at midnight Friday.
